“The beautiful lounge has been vandalised!”
Reviewed 28 August 2014 via mobile

We have been going to the Red Lion for afternoon tea for the last 20 years. On our latest visit (today) we were shocked to find that it has been vandalised! All the character has gone: the lounge is now soulless, echoing and empty. All the art, clocks and ornaments have gone. The furniture has been replaced with uncomfortable service-station style tables and chairs. The wallpaper is 1980s corporate and the sludge-brown carpet awful.

Everything was sticky to the touch (tables not cleaned) and it took ages to get any service (or even a menu!).

The High Tea is half the size it used to be and overpriced.

There were no other customers while we were there - clearly news has got around. It used to be so busy ... It is very sad but we will have to find somewhere else to go for our post-shopping teas.

The staff was very helpful and the room was very comfortable and clean, however, the shower pressure was very poor. Our problem with the hotel is that the lift was very unreliable and not working at times. This meant that during our check-out I had to carry our bags down 2 flights of stairs. The front desk assistant was so helpful and when the lift would not move, she actually helped me with the bags. (After we were down the stairs, my wife found out that the maids had locked down the lift for use in cleaning the rooms.) Very, very upsetting since this was prime check-out time. The hotel has a beautiful courtyard, but needs to be cleaned up each and everyday, not occasionally. The hotel has a very historic section and overall it was an average experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the back and not on the courtyard.

Very nicely located in central Salisbury. Salisbury Cathedral is just 2 blocks away. Clean and quaint with roomy rooms. Part of the hotel is air conditioned, the other is not. This could be a real issue in the summer (it was for us). We were able to open the windows and were given a desk fan. These helped, but those sensitive to hot and traveling during the summer months may want to specifically request an air conditioned room. Very nice staff.

If you are traveling with a large group and planning to have a group meal here, I suggest that you confirm that enough serving staff will be scheduled to address your expectations. We overwhelmed the nice and hard working staff members on our last morning there.

Room Tip: Some areas of the hotel are air conditioned, others not. Be aware of this if you make summer reserva...

Great location but well overpriced.
We visited this hotel in August 2014 for 2 nights, Check-in was efficient and the front desk girl was helpful enough although a smile could have made a difference.
We had to pay £15 per day to park in their car park which was very tight to park as the spaces were very small so if your have a large car beware of this.
The room was very small and look very dated as did the bathroom, looks like the place could do with a refurbishment.
Our room faced the courtyard and late at night you could hear noise in the hallway and in the courtyard were customers were having drinks.
We went to breakfast and were pointed to a table by a waitress and told that there is a continental buffet breakfast and to help ourselves. She did not offer us tea or coffee and did not mention anything about the cooked breakfast that could be ordered. It looked as if they very busy and had no time for you so we asked if it was possible to order a cooked breakfast and coffee, and it was ok.
The only good thing about the hotel is the location.

The front desk staff went out of their way to help us find our way around town and to find a hotel in London, our next stop. The hotel is old and historic and it was a fun place to stay. The location is excellent, close to the Market Square. Our room overlooked a busy street with traffic all night long, so I would recommend asking for a room off the street. The breakfast is extra but it was good. I would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the street. Street noise is very loud.

This Hotel has history overflowing, its a great location, so interesting but time has taken its toll on the building. So image my excitement to see this beautiful building being transformed and allowed to shine again. Paint, flooring and a lot of love and care is going into making this potential No 1 place to stay in Salisbury. That is why I chose the hotel for my big birthday bash. The Catering was outstanding, the service second to none, always there in the background to service but not suffocate. It is a Hotel in the centre of Salisbury so expect to be drawn into the experience, there are lovely quiet areas to relax, or vibrant areas to join in. Congratulations Red Lion you are looking great for you age!

Room Tip: Maybe towards the back of the hotel - but the rooms are being updated as I type this.
