Everything about this hotel is delightful. The courtyard is alive with tweeting birds in the vines which clad the ancient building. The staff are friendly and the service excellent as are the furnishings and food. Full of ancient curiosities, certainly a haven to enjoy in the centre of a busy city.
We will return.

It was pouring rain as we arrived and it is a little bit difficult to find using our gps and upon arrival the exterior is not exactly over whelming, but once you enter it it like taking a step back in time. Our room was well sized especially our large bathroom. The bed was really comfortable, infact the best sleep I have had since arriving in UK.
We had dinner in the lounge room, a lovely old world room with exposed black Tudor beams. Food was good and a big thank you to Charley for looking after us so well.
A buffet breakfast was included with accommodation and was served in the classic restaurant/ garden room- a very pretty space. Breakfast offered a wide variety of warm dishes as well and cereals, pastries and fruits and was well presented.

My friend and I visited here one Saturday for afternoon tea. I live locally so I have been here a couple of times before. I love this hotel, its full of charm and the staff are welcoming. The afternoon tea with bucks fizz was very nice and there was just enough food, sandwiches, cakes (the mini chocolate gateaux and red velvet cake was our favourites!) and warm scones. The hotel is very pretty and full of character, sitting out in the courtyard when the sun is shining with a beer in hand is perfect. During our visit there were plenty of people ordering food and it all looked delicious. I must go back to try their wider menu!

Spent 1 night there as a family of 4. Beautiful old coaching inn in the centre of picturesque Salisbury, within easy walking distance of everything.

Very clean rooms, good quality fittings and comfortable beds. Very friendly and helpful staff though they did seem a bit rushed off their feet. We were there on a Friday night and there was a bit of street noise, which didn't bother us at all, but if you are a light sleeper you might like to request an interior room.

The reason I took 1 star off was the food, which whilst perfectly good and tasty, seemed a little lacking in inspiration as other reviewers have pointed out. The breakfast buffet had plenty of variety except that there was only one kind of egg (scrambled) which ran out while I was there and was not immediately replaced. They charge extra for hot chocolate, which surprised me - most hotels offer hot chocolate at breakfast and indeed the Red Lion itself had hot chocolate sachets in the room, so makes no sense to me to charge for it at breakfast.

So all in all a good solid option, a friendly and beautiful place to stay.

My wife and I recently stayed the Red Lion on a short break to Salisbury. It is a wonderful hotel with lots of charm and character. Originally dating from the time when the cathedral was being built, it is still possible to see some remnants of the original daub and wattle walling in some parts of the hotel. We had two such sections revealed in our "traditional" bedroom. There wasn't a view as such from the bedroom window - just looking out on to the roof of other parts of the hotel, but there was plenty of interesting features in the room itself; a tiled fireplace with cast iron range, two sections of original walling exposed and a most elaborately carved bedhead which looked to be an original Jacobean piece.
The ensuite bathroom contained a large oval bath with good shower over, modern sanitary ware and tasteful tiling. A large heated towel rail provided warmth.
The only meals we had at the hotel were breakfasts and these were very enjoyable, with a good choice to cater for all tastes. We chose to eat out in the evenings just to get a wider experience of what Salisbury had to offer.
We found the staff at the hotel to be very pleasant and helpful. They were also knowledgeable about Salisbury and its environs and were happy to suggest ways of getting about and places to go.

Room tip: If you like rooms with lots of character, ask for one of their "traditional" rooms.
