“Tired Hotel in perfect location”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

Grasmere Hotel is within easy walking distance of the City centre and cathedral. We booked a superior room with great views of the river and cathedral behind.
The room was almost identical to any room you would find in a premier inn with the same lay out and of a very similar size but more expensive. The decor was tired and had been patched in places requiring a complete re decoration. This applied to the hotel in general.
The staff, while not unfriendly, gave the impression that they were not happy to be there always looking tired and unsmiling.
Breakfast was dis organised and not very well cooked or particularly fresh even though we were invariably first to arrive.
On one occasion the chef managed to produce two fried eggs that had crispy whites and partially cooked yolks. Not to impressive in a hotel that charges 22 pounds for a 6 oz fillet steak! Needless to say we choose to dine elsewhere in the evenings.
Our room overlooked the gardens at the rear of the hotel which sloped gently down to the river and i imagine it would be a pleasant garden to sit in in the summer.

Room Tip: Rooms at the rear over looking the garden are the best choice.

I stayed in the Grasmere for 3 nights on a recent business trip. The room was a really good size, and spotlessly clean. I had great views over the river, which paired with the comfortable chair next to the window meant it was a nice spot to read a book after a day of meetings.

The restaurant is a real asset of this hotel. The food quality was fantastic, especially when I had the evening meal there on one night. The breakfast is normally a buffet affair, but on one quiet morning the staff took my order and it was freshly cooked and beautifully presented. The service was a little cold in the restaurant on the night I ate there, but the ladies running breakfast were very friendly and efficient.

With it only being a 10 minute walk/15 minute stroll in to the city centre it is well located and the free car parking is a real plus.

I will certainly be back here on business again in the future, and hopefully for pleasure soon too!

We have stayed in Salisbury on a number of occasions but this was our first sortie "south of the rivers", tempted in no small part by the £63 bed and breakfast offer. We had asked for a room on the ground floor if possible and were duly given one of their disabled rooms. Huge drive-in shower and fine view - imagine Constable and you are there. Comfortable bed. Self-serve breakfast which allows you to view the cooked offerings before deciding though I recognise that other prefer to be served. The offerings were good, by the way. I concur with others, however, in comments re unenthusiastic breakfast welcome and the "tiredness" of some of the public areas which could do with a makeover. Plenty of parking. Without the exceptional value for money I might have awarded three stars but four is probably just deserved. We would certainly return if good offers were repeated but it would need to be balanced against the convenience of accommodation in the town centre.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel have less sun but more cathedral!

After a shaky start this turned out to be a real find.
We arrived to one of the coldest receptions I've ever witnessed. Despite staff at reception there was no acknowledgement of our presence - not even a "we'll be with you in a moment".
Check was no fuss thereafter, but getting information about the hotel facilities was trying. It had the feel that all guests were returning and knew their way around, not that we hadn't been before.
The room was excellent with views of the river and Cathedral. It was a good size with a lovely bathroom.
Dinner was superb. Being on a special deal we expected a limited choice but the full menu was available. The restaurant staff were well trained and knew their stuff.
After a good night's sleep - to breakfast. Again the quality and value was excellent but the staff didn't seem interested. There was no welcome, "did you sleep well?", or even a polite enquiry about room numbers; just a stand off while we awaited instruction on where to sit and how breakfast worked.
Check out was fine and we left.
I definitely recommend it to stay. The value we had from 3 course Dinner, bed and breakfast for less than £100 was scarcely believable. If the staffs friendliness and training could be resolved it would be perfect.

We had read the reviews and felt some accurately reflected the state of the hotel, having visited it recently on a long weekend. There are parts which need a face lift, the reception area is too small and the bar area is wholly inadequate. On the plus side the food served was of the highest class, the room we had quite adequate, whilst the parking for a hotel so near to the town centre was very satisfactory.
The staff made every effort to provide a good service, but please do not smoke outside the hotel when needed at reception, it spoils the whole tenor of the place, nor leave laundry bags by door entrances. With a little more work/effort this could set a much higher standard of service generally

Room Tip: Get a room facing inwards

Nice enough and we got an upgraded room, but decor is a little tired and breakfast the normal uninspired buffet.

Seems to target weddings and the older set (not that we had trouble with noise from a wedding)

City centre was a pleasant ~10min walk

Grasmere House hotel is very convenient as you can walk into Salisbury either by the river or through the Close. It is good to get free parking. The hotel is as other poeple say rather tired, shabby and dated and could do with a good clean, but it provides a bed and breakfast at a reasonable cost. The breakfast is pretty poor - I have no idea how it it's possible to make toast that flabby! Staff are variable - people on reception fine, but the person just chatting up guests and then leaning on the reception counter drumming his fingers and sighing doesn't really help anyone! However we woud stay there again because of the location and price.

Room Tip: Book a room at the back of the hotel. We were at the front and although the hotel is set back from t...
