We visited this site as part of our Stonehenge tour. They drop you off at a local bus stop, where you cautiously walk across a busy road and up past a lay by where a 'blue' postcard size sign (on a post) points you towards a path. We walked through a gate and up the hill along a rough path. Through another gate which led onto a road leading to the car park. We then walked through the car park and over a bridge to the old castle; this probably took us half an hour all up. It was worth it to walk around the ruins of the old castle and to look down onto the site of the original cathedral.

I probably wouldn't have visited this site has I not had an English Heritage Pass. It turned out to be a great site. It was interesting and scenic although I have to admit that the aerial photos I've seen give much more of the picture than walking around the site as one can't really appreciate the earthworks at ground level. Still, it's worth a look.

Old Sarum overlooks Salisbury. One can get a good distant view of the cathedral. It was not overly crowded so one could enjoy the aura surrounding the site. When one climbs to the top of the ruins one can get a marvelous view of the remains of the old cathedral. I had never been there before and really enjoyed it.

There are lots of brilliant events on here during the summer but as a place in its own right it is interesting too. The original cathedral stood here, the ruins of the castle are beautifully explained and you can relax in the large open space in the middle and watch gliders and private planes, including vintage ones fly overhead.

I took the bus from Salisbury -- it's only about five minutes, then walked back through the fields and city -- it took about 45 mins.

The staff were very friendly and the views spectacular. It's a ruin, but possible to cover a lot of terrain compared to some.

There is a small gift shop, which also sells drinks and ice cream.
