After visiting the Stonehenge, we took the stonehenge tour bus to Old Sarum. There are two paths you can walk up; one very short and the other one very very long. We took the long way up, the route people go up to run. If you'd like to go the short way, look for a black gate and just open it and get in. We thought it was locked so we took the other way up. The path we took was like walking up and around the hill. The weather and the view were magnificent. It took about 15-20 minutes to get to the top which is a vast clearing.

Many people took their dogs up there to run around.

When you get up there you'll see the ruins. You can explore and buy back some souvenirs from the gift shop.

I recommend getting the wooden postcard. It's got an illustration and description of Old Sarum on it. Such a cool postcard to send back home.

Largely in ruins - and the cathedral is just an outline - but very atmospheric with a rich history dating from the original iron age enclosure. Worth getting a guide book a this adds to understanding and appreciation of the site. Visited at schools' half term so rather busy but obviously enjoyed as much by the primary school age children that were there as by me and my teenage son.

Fabulous place. Having read Sarum by Edward Rutherfurd it was great to visit The actual site. A surprising amount of ruins remain on the motte although it must have been a very cold, inhospitable place to live if you were a lowly serf. Provides excellent views of the surrounding Wiltshire countryside. Whilst standing in the footprint of the original cathedral you can easily imagine just how big this building must have been. I felt I recognised the place from the excellent description in Rutherfurd's book.

On route to Stonehenge and after some local research decided to visit Old Sarum as well. Beautifully preserved castle relic, whats left of the original buildings which are nearly 900 years old is amazing. Steeped in history with information boards around giving you all the history. We walked all around. Took some amazing photos, very reasonable to get in, toilets on site too.
Well worth a visit for real history.

After learning that Eleanor of Acquitane lived here, I HAD to check out Granny's place. I loved it and it gave me such a powerful connection to the history of this part of England.
