Arundells was Ted Heath’s home for the last half of his life, and is kept as he liked it and left it. There are photos on the piano, which you can play if you are good, or brave, enough.
In every room there is a steward who is very knowledgeable about the man and his house, and happy to talk. There is a large garden which runs down to the river, where the Avon and Nadder meet. This is mostly as Heath knew it. There are wonderful views of Salisbury Cathedral to be had from both house and garden.
The property closes during the winter months for renovation and maintenance, so check before you visit.

This place was never on my radar, but a friend who had met (and sailed against) Sir Edward thought I might like it. I did.

The house and the man are tied up completely, in the same spirit as Churchill and the War Rooms are, but to a much more intimate degree. Taking the tour leaves one feeling a familiarity, a fondness for the man.

The tour itself was informative and our guide was generous with her time in answering questions about the house and Mr. Heath. She knew him well.

We even chatted with the groundskeeper.

A final surprise, as we left we found the books sold in reception are very inexpensive.

A most interesting property, not only for the house itself but for the information on Sir Edward Heath and his life, especially the musical side to his life and is friendships forged throughout the world as a politician.
