This unique glass-roofed area provides a wonderful space in which to relax, meet up with friends and enjoy food and drink, with views of the spire soaring 123m (404 ft) above you. It offers a self-service buffet selection of homemade cakes and pastries throughout the day, Fair-trade coffee, fresh leaf tea, a selection of sandwiches, rolls and panini, afternoon tea - and plenty more besides. Freshly prepared hot lunches and homemade soup are served from midday through until 2.00Pm. 'Early bird' and 'cream tea specials' are available. Families with young children are always welcome at the restaurant, with a "Monster bag" selection menu for younger children. There are also books and a children's play table to help keep youngsters entertained whilst you enjoy your refreshments.

“Good food”
Reviewed 24 April 2014

We got good coffee to fuel the Tower Tour and returned for a light lunch. They have a variety of hot and cold foods, and could accomodate my sister's gluten free needs.

“Amazing view - look up!”
Reviewed 11 April 2014 via mobile

What really makes this place is the location - squashed very skilfully between the cloisters and the cathedral. And the amazing view - as long as you remember to look up through the glass roof! We were simply here mid-morning so cannot comment on the food, but the atmosphere was very pleasant, and the tea was really lovely.

“Rubbish refurbishment?”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

This was previously a well laid out cafe/ restaurant with flexible seating and a contemporary and open feel which suited the modern refectory well. However the refectory has now been re-opened following a refurbishment which appears to have been designed by amateurs. Out have gone the modern beech and chrome chairs and tables to be replaced by heavy and cheap looking wooden tables and chairs. The former toilet areas have been replaced by dark alcoves and the whole room now feels more cluttered and cramped than it did before the refurbishment. This has not been helped by the addition of shelves with old books and useless tacky ornaments and artefacts; goodness knows what they were thinking about when they installed all that naff old rubbish; presumably an attempt to introduce a `retro vintage' feel but totally wrong here. The staff must find the new layout much more difficult as there is less room to move around and the flexibility of the old tables, which could be combined to make a long table to suit groups of visitors, has now been lost in favour of the new heavy tables and chairs. When we visited many of the tables had been reserved at 11.00 am; most of the remaining tables had already been taken and the place felt claustrophobic, cramped and rather hectic. The food and drinks are fairly average as before. Following the opening of the massively improved toilets we had high expectations of the restaurant refurbishment but were very disappointed by this which appears to be a large step backwards. Perhaps whoever was responsible for this mistake could arrange to put it back as it was.

“Reasonable site restaurant”
Reviewed 5 March 2014

The restaurant is very much like many which belong to historic places and attractions. It is nothing special, but it does provide a very reasonable inexpensive meal, and the area was spotlessly clean.
