“Avoid - completely mediocre”
Reviewed 4 September 2010

There is absolutely nothing to recommend this place: really basic breakfast, room felt old with a frayed carpet and patches on the ceiling, there were odd little signs around the room about what you can/can't do which made you feel like you were in a suspicious juvenile detention centre rather than a welcoming hotel, service was ok from some but really grudging from others and the place was grossly overpriced. The location is fine though, thankfully allowing you a quick escape so you can spend as little time in the hotel as possible.

Also hilarious was that they have a comments book but had attempted to tipex out a negative comment, though you could still read it. They can't even get that right, and anyway should be looking to learn from the negative comments rather than pretend they're not there.

I can't believe they have a sign at reception encouraging you to write a review on tripadvisor! They must be seriously disillusioned.

Just got back from a lovely romantic mini break in The Kings Arms Hotel, Salisbury. The location was perfect, very central for shops, restaurants and the beautiful cathedral. We stayed in a four poster room where rumour states that hundreds of years ago King Charles II stayed! A quirky, irregular sloping and winding staircase lead to the large, oak panelled room, full of all mod cons such as ensuite bathroom, flat screened T.V. and mini bar fridge! Breakfast was delcious and staff were very welcoming and helpful. Great service and a fantastic stay - well worth a visit!

We chose the Kings Arms for location and historic charm. To be fair, the location (just outside the St. Ann's entrance to the Cathedral close) is very convenient, and the building (the main building) is clearly historic. Unfortunately there is little charm to be found in the dingy poorly maintained establishment.

The room we were given was in "the annex" which is reached by a staircase in an alley beside the main building. The annex structure is not pictured on the website and our room look nothing like the ones shown in the photos. There are no quaint historic features visible inside or out. The room we were given was small, bare and undecorated. It was just large enough to hold the required furniture: A double & a twin bed, a desk, a wardrobe and a tea stand. It reminded me of a bare dorm room. The bathroom was larger. There was a tub and shower. The water pressure was good.

The best thing I can say about the cleanliness of the room was that it didn't smell. It appeared that someone was following minimal instructions: change the linen, empty the trash can and wipe down the bathroom fixtures. However that was the extent of the cleaning and maintenance. The floors were unswept, there were dead bugs stuck to the ceiling in the bathroom, the shower tile and curtain needed more of a scrubbing, it was best if one did not look to carefully in corners. One of the lamps had a bulb just perched in the socket because it didn't actually fit the lamp. The pillows were totally flat and should have been replaced long ago. There were visible bloodstains on some of them. I don't believe there was any air-conditioning or fan. The windows had been left open for circulation. The view was a parking lot. This was noisy in the mornings. The hotel advertised free internet in the rooms, but it did not work in our room.

The main building has a restaurant/pub/lounge. The restaurant area does have exposed beams and an old English pub feel, but where our room was dingy the public area was filthy. The lighting is very dark and that's probably just as well. The carpet is permanently stained. The walls and ceiling should be repainted to cover dirt and water stains. The tablecloths are not changed between sittings. The table we ate breakfast at had rice spilled on both the cloth and the seat from a prior meal. Our dishes and cutlery were not clean. We sent some back and then searched around the other tables trying to find a clean glass. The quality of the food was better than the atmosphere, but it was difficult to maintain an appetite in the dirty surroundings. My husband used the lounge area to get his internet connection over the three days that we were there and said that place he sat at was not cleaned at all during that time.

The staff were nice enough there never seemed to be more than one person there at a time.

The building is 400 years old, and it is charming looking. The rickety old stairs and sloping floors are fun but apart from that the place has little to recommend it. The staff were friendly enough, but coming down for dinner the only person in the bar was the chief and they had run out of ale. An English pub/hotel and they had run out of beer! My room had an odd smell, the carpet was stained, and the shower dripped so badly that I put in ear plugs. All in all not good.

I have to admit, when we were placed in an annex our first night at the King's Arms -- a large room with a huge bathroom, but in a separate building, where you had to go up and down an outside staircase -- I was very disappointed. We asked the staff the next day if we could move and they moved us to room 5 on the 1st floor of the main building. WOW!!!! We loved the tiny hsllways, the uneven stairs, the low ceilings -- we loved everything about this old building. And the room itself was wonderful. The staff is great at this hotel -- very friendly people, very accommodating. I spent a lot of time in the lounge; it was so cozy, hanging out there. Breakfast was fabulous. Only downer was Internet was quite spotty in the rooms -- but it gave me a reason to hang out in the lounge.

Stayed here for a business trip, had 4 fantastic evening meals with good wine in a most hospitable and friendly atmosphere, 4 reasonable nights sleep (not the hotels fault, stress with work!) In a large and comfortable room and 4 glorious breakfasts. Wonderful helpful service and extremely friendly staff.
