“Classic British Pub and adorable garden”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

Our tour guide suggested this pub for lunch after spending the morning touring Stonehenge and before heading off to Windsor Castle for the rest of the day. The food was classic pub food, most enjoyable and very tasty. Between all of us, we enjoyed the burgers, fish & chips and a steak & kidney pie, all washed down with local ales of course. The pub itself is from the 1100's if I remember correctly, so it had the very classic, ancient pub charm. The surprise of the visit was the beautiful small garden in the back, and if it hadn't been raining, we surely would have enjoyed our lunch out in the garden as well.

“Pub food as it should be”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

We were recommended the New Inn by the nice man at the cathedral car park. It didn't look fantastic on the outside, nor when entering into a dark and empty bar. However, walking through to the back where the patio doors opened out into a lovely beer garden, it was like two pubs in one. We ordered a burger and steak and ale pie - both were delicious. The steak was tender and tasty, no fat, nice gravy and lovely crisp pastry. Cheesecake for dessert was smooth and creamy.

Quick service (though it wasn't busy at all) and friendly staff. Really nice.

“Back on form, nearly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014

Knowing that the kitchen and dining room were refurbishedd we booked and visited for Sunday lunch on a busy day. The food was excellent & the setting super but we were not advised that there would be a delay (50 minutes) on food. I did hear people just after us being advised of delay but we were not. Luckily the newspaper on the bar gave us something to do but it did get irritating after 30 min to see food going past us to diners in the garden. Prioritising bookings over drop ins may be an idea for them to contemplate. When the food came it was, as I said, excellent.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

Our friends drove up from Germany for a long weekend so we decided to take them up to Salisbury. We first visited the cathedral and after purchasing our tickets I asked the lady behind the till for advice where to take them for a real British meal. She named two pubs where they usually go and said the food was good. After watching our friend taking hundreds of photos and chatting to a gentleman volunteering at the cathedral we decided it was time for lunch.
We find the pub easily as it's not far from the cathedral. We went all the way at the back of the building looking for enough seating for all of us. One of us went to find a member of a staff as there was not one of them to be seen. She came back with a young boy who sad it was OK to move the tables together and that they don't do table service, we have to order at the front and left. After rearranging the tables my friend pulled her notebook out and started writting who wants what. All of our friends wanted to try the fish and chips with peas and onion rings and we ordered the burgers for ourselfs. One of us went to order with the list and after this we started chatting. Even that we had a lot to talk about after a while we run out of conversation topics still sitting and waiting for our food to arrive. We started to feel a bit embarrassed as this was our friends first visit to the UK and we wanted them to have a good experience. Finally the food arrived but there was no apology or explanation from the staff about the delay, they put the plates down and left immediately. Our burgers were good and when we asked our friends about their fish and chips they seemed happy till one of them pointed it out that his food arrived without onion rings what was clearly stated as part of the meal on the menu. After this we realised not one of the fish and chips had onion rings served with them. So again one of us got up and went to find a member of a staff. She asked him politely if there were out of onion rings as we didn't get any. He sad no and asked if we still wanted them as we were half way through with our meals. She sad yes. Much later once we actually finished the food he surfaced again with a small bowl of onion rings and he chucked the bowl down between our 5 friends who should have had them with their meal. Again no explanation or apology was given and he left without clearing our table of the empty plates. We could clearly see him a walking around texting on his mobile phone not even glancing at our table. When finally the table was cleared the staff did not offer the menu for a dessert or coffee so we agreed to leave.
We spent more than £100 at this establishment and the service we received was horrible. I do not understand how a pub like this can still be in business. Needles to say we spent the rest of the afternoon apologizing to our friends and reassuring them this was not what British hospitality looks like.

“Home from home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2014

Ahhh how good to see the New Inn back on top from. The spectacular garden is once more in full bloom after much hard work from the team over the end of last summer and the begining of this year. The fabulous facelift has kept the character and charm intact while helping the drinking and dinning experince become even better.
Having been away for a few months I was worried the warmth, typically felt in this pub, might have been lost with a snazzy upgrade, I should not have worried! The small cosmetic touchs that were needing are now set straight and the atmosphere remains as warm as ever. Beer and food remain as tastey as ever and with the summer nights I can see myself enjoying many evenings out by the wonderful fire pit! Keep up the good work guys!
