Description: The name of this historic inn was perpetuated when it became a Wetherspoon pub in 2010. The Bear has been on this site since 1845. Previously, it was at the corner of Park Street and High Street. The Bear is recorded in 1489, when the landlord charged ‘an unlawful price for provisions’. In the early 19th century, it was one of the town’s main coaching inns, but was converted into a private house in 1845. We at The Bear offer low priced quality food and drinks with a big variety to choose from. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner we are very popular with families with our award winning children's menu. We are actively involved in CAMRA Club with local meetings held here, with a great choice of 5 guest ales on continuously rotating you can see why it's their choice of location. We also offer a great craft beer range. We have plenty of other drinks available for those who aren't beer fans, with a great selection of Gins and Vodkas. Wines, ciders, cocktails and soft drinks available.

“Great food and nice atmosphere!”

Nice pub where you will get cheap and good food, with a lot of choice. Lots of drinks are available and the staff is very friendly. It can be recommended!

“Great Wetherspoons local”
Reviewed 4 June 2013 via mobile

A really good Weatherspoons local, a bit more classy than most Weatherspoons pubs. The beer and the food are the same quality and good value, but the decor and staff are more what you would expect to find in a more pretentious venue.

“Good for beer, avoid the food in my view”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

Despite being a Wetherspoons and making you think it'll be full of sports fans drinking lager all day, this is a lovely building with a very good range of guest real ales. The staff are knowledgeable about the guest ales and don't have the retail feel to that end of their service. However, the food is very obviously made to a low price point, I've stopped eating anything other than a simple nibble.
