“Beautiful gothic castle hotel”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

This hotel has undergone major renovation and been brought back to it's former glory. We originally chose this place as it was the setting for numerous movies including Dracula and Rocky Horror Picture Show. (We actually stayed here during the annual Rocky reunion which we found very entertaining as some of the guests were dressed as characters from the film!) We got to stay in the room with the angled windows and gargoyles, which had a four poster canopy bed, fireplace, built in wardrobes, and old fashioned bath fixtures - along with internet and television access. Food here was delicious and a large breakfast buffet is served. The grounds are absolutely gorgeous with the Thames River running along side. There is also an indoor pool available. Definitely at the top of my list as one of my favorite places to stay in Europe.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms in the original castle as they have the most character.

One night stay beginning of May 2014.
Arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon and front of house opened a reserved parking space for us even though we hadn't reserved a space. Nice touch.
Glass of cold champagne at reception. Even nicer touch.
Room was spacious and had a nice view of grounds and Thames.
Played golf on pitch and putt, greens were poor but a nice little feature for hotel.
Taxi ordered was prompt and very helpful guide to Bray where we ate in the evening.
Bar area after our meal out was a nice relaxed atmosphere with a few characters which made us smile.
Pool was small, sauna and steam room was fine, jacuzzi didn't work which is poor.
Relaxed in the grounds which has beautifully crafted wooden animal sculptures made from driftwood.

I would recommend this to friends and family and we're thinking of going back in the future.

Room Tip: Thames view rooms are good.

Dear G4Z,

Thank you for your 5 Star review

I'm so pleased that our Butler's looked after you upon arrival with a parking space and some bubbly, the only way to begin any visit to Oakley Court!

I'm also pleased that you enjoyed our golf course and leisure facilities, I am sorry that Jacuzzi had a fault while you were here, i'm happy to say that is now bubbling away nicely.

The driftwood sculptures have become a real feature at the hotel and we have new one's arriving all the time so please keep an eye out for any additions on your next visit,

Kindest regards

I was very surprised when I discovered this hotel backed onto the River - the trees, the shrubs extremely well cared for added to the magical charm of this hotel.

The architectural features are also a delight and a great comparison to many of the other hotels in the area. The aritculation and intricate features dotted throughout the building add a great charm to this venue.

The open grass verge was a great contrast to the detail of the building. The staff were all delightful and being served in the room was as equally as fine as being served in the breakfast room.

One thing I like was sitting outside where they had some laid back music playing just within ears reach.....all very charming.

The approach to the hotel and its grounds was great....

Room Tip: One tip I would say to the hotel and the travellers be mindful is that the room has to be aired. A...

We stayed in the deluxe river view room, which lived up to the description! a few metres away from the Thames, overlooking swans and the odd boat going past! The room itself was large and very comfortable, though smelled slightly musty (maybe as it's on a level with the river!). Extra touches such as robes in the room made it very special. The staff could not do enough to help and were all friendly and polite. The only down side was the price of the bar food - relatively ordinary food- such as burgers and "sandwiches" at high prices. Nice food, but not worth paying that much; it cost is over £60 for two for a bar meal, a couple of drinks and coffee. But overall a beautiful setting & fantastic service . Didn't try the spa but it looked lovely.

Room Tip: River view room was excellent if you are willing to pay the extra!

Dear Jane I,

Thank you for your review, it was so nice to hear that you enjoyed your perfect location overlooking the River Thames and the little extras like Bathrobes in every room.

Maybe next time you can speak to our Butler's department about hiring a bike (complimentary of course) and cycling along the river into Windsor, a perfect way to spend the day

Kindest regards

This hotel is right on the river Thames, our bedroom window was yards from the river, which was lovely. We were in the West Wing, downstairs,( Room 209).It was a family room and it was huge. The master bed was huge and could easily sleep two of us and the 6 year old, who refused to sleep with his brother on the fold out bed. The room was quite dark but clean and comfortable. There is free wifi but we found that our phones did not have a signal. We got a lovely fruit basket when we arrived which was a nice touch. There are not that many channels on TV, just the basic like BBC 1 & 2, ITV,BBC News 24, Channel 4 & 5 and E4, and probably a couple more, although there were a few movies to rent at around £3.99 each.
There was 2 bathrobes for the room, would have been even nicer touch if there were 4, for a family of 4.. Also bathrooms had 'The White Company' toiletries, which was lovely, but really tiny bottles, a bit too small for a family of four to all have showers and wash hair etc..
We only had one meal as this was a Legoland( 10 mins in the car) and Windsor Castle ( 5 mins down a straight road) trip so we ate out mostly but the one lunch we had in the terrace outside was just lovely, beautiful setting, food took a while( we were the only diners at 3:00 PM) but the setting was so lovely we did not mind at all. The grounds also had an area the kids can play football and you can also rent boats from the hotel..
The real test was the second night. We tried to shower after all day at Legoland and found that the shower thermostat was broken, spouting only boiling water, so I rang hotel from the room and someone came straightaway and did their best, found they could not fix it and the duty manager came to apologise, let us have the use of another room so we could shower and took money off our hotel bill..!!!
Having stayed in many Five Star Hotels around the world, I have found that the real test for a hotel is not whether things go wrong or not, but what they do after things go wrong ,as NO HOTEL can ever guarantee that NOTHING will go wrong and things do go wrong, often, even in the most luxurious 7 star hotels...This hotel is really a 5 star hotel for the prompt manner in which they reacted to our problem and we were very impressed.
We would definitely recommend it to anyone considering staying here and hope we can come back one day.

Room Tip: Don't chose 209 if you need to stay connected on your telephone.

Dear Rpachuau,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review.

Thank you also for your understanding when your shower broke, as you say something's are beyond our control but I am so pleased that you found our response to be of a '5 Star' standard.
We are in the process of providing larger bottles of our White Company toiletries and children's bathrobes so hopefully the next time that you come you will notice these subtle changes.
I'm pleased that you had the opportunity to enjoy our Terrace dining and noticed our children's football area, we also now have children's and adults Hunter Wellies from our Boot Room for hire ( complimentary ) so next time you can try our nature trail through the woods.

I look forward to welcoming you back to Oakley Court in the future,

Kind regards

A fantastic, gothic looking main building in beautifully landscaped gardens. Our room was located in the west wing, which is off the main building, with a view of a hedge, not the river. We never requested a river view - something we know for the next time!

We didn't eat in the restaurant, but did have afternoon tea a couple of times and they were excellent, well worth the expense. The sandwiches, cake and scones were very more-ish...

The service of the Staff was generally very good, very attentive and not too overbearing. This hotel seems to be moving to a USA service model, where a service charge is added to all transactions with the hotel. Why should I be expected to pay a further 10% for every hotel transaction? Why not just increase the prices by 10%? I also doubt that the 'service charge' actually goes to the Staff, and not the Hotel...

This then causes embarrassment at check-out, when you request the service charges to be removed. This really us just a devious way of increasing the hotel revenue. Needless to say, we didn't pay it, and neither should you!

In summary, a really relaxing break (except for the service charge issue) and will return in the future.

Dear AndyStone,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review.

I'm so please that you enjoyed our 'more-ish' afternoon tea and let me please assure you that our staff receive 100% of the service charge that is added to the invoice. We are completely happy to remove the service charge if you feel that you would rather not pay it.

We look forward to welcoming you back the next time that you fancy a relaxing break,

I cannot express how wonderful we found this hotel. We spent 3 nights for a birthday. The hotel arranged flowers and chocolates in the room as a surprise. Assistance with our credit card overseas was required and Ashley went above and beyond his duties to assist us. The room was wonderful, the service excellent and location perfect. Highly recommended. Have a meal on the patio overlooking the Thames if you have the opportunity. ..Beautiful.
