Owner description: Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and offers an extraordinarily rich and varied day out. Throughout its history, the Castle has been redecorated, enlarged and rebuilt. Today The Queen spends most of her private weekends at the Castle, which is also used regularly for ceremonial and State occasions. Your ticket to Windsor Castle includes entry to our exhibition Waterloo at Windsor.

Set on the only hill in the area, Windsor castle is an imposing and impressive site. It was raining heavily on the day of our visit, fortunately there was not the usual long queue but nevertheless it was a long wet walk before we got inside the actual building and into the dry. Very efficient processing of the ticketing, audio tour equipment with very friendly staff and what turned out to be an excellent value for money entrance price. The audio tour was the best I have ever experienced and gave that sense of occasion and history demanded by such spectacular surroundings. Yes, there really is the bullet that killed Lord Nelson, Henry the 8th's suit of armour and a doll's house with running water and a working miniature gramophone. Every step ouses history, this is not an experience to be hurried. It would be too easy to become saturated with awe. We waited and got saturated instead by the rain on our way from the state rooms and main area to St George's Chapel. Again the audio guide brought this to heavenly light, this is truly a jaw dropping, breath takingly awesome place. I could have spent a whole day here and this brings me to my one criticism, my legs were giving out. At 69 years old I needed a rest and a cup of tea. Windsor Castle is not a user friendly site for older people. There are few places to sit down, particularly when it is raining. To get refreshment and a rest it would have necessitated a half mile walk from the castle into town and then re entry. Whoever decided to close the cafe that used to be open inside the castle did a severe disservice to seniors. Actually, the whole town of Windsor is very elderly unfriendly in services, not the people they are wonderful, but the way infrastructure is mismanaged by the council bureaucrats for visitors. They are doing the local businesses a severe disservice.
However, overall, the visit to Windsor Castle was top class and would rate in the top 100 places I have ever visited.

Plenty to see around Windsor as well as the castle itself. Relax and spend the day wandering around. A monument to Queen Victoria also stands just outside the castle walls.

One of the Knights of Windsor conducted our small group around both the Castle and the Chapel. So much to see and definately worth the entry fee. If our travelling time, health and feet had been able to take it, we would have liked to have spent days here. Easy to understand why our monarchy enjoys this place so much.
