“Great location, nice choice”
Reviewed 9 September 2012

Booked Harte & Garter through late rooms.com as the price was cheaper there than the hotel website. We booked for two nights bed and breakfast. The location is fantastic opposite Windsor Castle and on the High Street.  The hotel looks modern and fresh. The room was very comfortable and had all the amenities you would expect. However breakfast was rather disappointing at £10.00 per head. There was a hot and cold buffet, sadly the hot section was more cold than hot. Would go back, but miss out on breakfast.

The Harte and Garter is a landmark with a rich history of it's own facing the castle and rising up majestically alongside Windsor Central station! It is a handsome, imposing buiding. You cannot be more central. The castle and open top sightseeing buses are on your doorstep. Theatre 3 minutes walk. River 5 minutes. Fantastic range of shops and eateries all around. For culture vultures the Guildhall and Parish Church are both worth a visit and only a 2 minute walk away. Room was very large and comfortable with good quality furnishings. The nice big comfy armchairs meant we could watch late night tv in comfort! Very nice to sit in the bar at night looking out at the castle. A four star hotel that feels like a four star, all plush and plump. Only gripe - breakfast. Good variety but cooked stuff was only ok.

Stayed in this hotel as a family with small children for four nights as part of our trip to Windsor/legoland. We purchased a good deal over the internet for the hotel stay plus legoland tickets for two days. The location of this hotel is one of the best in Windsor with Windsor castle across the street, many restaurants/ cafes near by, and the bus stop to legoland just a short walk. Our room was very spacious and clean the only downside that there was no view except for the wall of the building across, but it didn't matter to us as we were only using the room for sleeping, and the A/C in the room was a bit tricky to start. The staff where nice and the breakfast was good.

Stayed here for 2 nights, booked room with balcony. Advertised as Hotel and Spa. The hotel is nice but it does not have a spa, it is next door to a spa which involves going outside to get to. It is not free to use the facilities there you have to pay £15 per person and you can only use it for max 2 hours. The stables spa is not very nice and the water in the hyrdro pool was cold, the steam room and feature shower was not working. The hydro pools tiles were sharp and alot of the grout had come out. You are not given slippers and the toilet is a walk through a public area which is freezing to use. The floor is tiled so slippery and dangerous. The hairdryers in the womens changing rooms didnt work either. We specifically booked this hotel for the spa as we like a swim and sauna etc when we are away. The room was ok, it was not as shown in the pictures the pictures were much nicer. No balcony either! The bed was awful 2 x single pushed together bad back from sleeping in the gap. It is perfectly located for shopping and windsor castle with fantastic views of the castle. Staff are friendly and hotel was clean.

My husband and I recently spent one night at the Harte and Garter after purchasing a travel deal that included high tea, a castle-view room, and breakfast. We arrived before check-in, so decided to have the high tea for lunch. The scones were excellent: served hot, with generous portions of clotted cream and jam. The sandwiches were so-so, and the mini-cakes looked better than they tasted.

When having a castle-view room, one of the first things I’d imagine most people would do is go to the window to look out at the castle. Although the view was lovely, the window sills were covered with a layer of dust and dead bugs, which was rather unpleasant, even if it wasn’t directly in the room (there is an outer and inner set of windows, and it was the middle set of sills). Also, the castle-view side is on the main street, which can be loud. Even with earplugs I was awakened during the night by drunk teenagers shouting at each other. We were on the first floor (and directly above a bus stop), and I would guess that rooms higher up would be a bit quieter.

The room itself (#108) was of a very good size, much larger than we were expecting. Two single beds were pushed together to make a king size … not necessarily bad, but we discovered that things could easily slip between the crack (e.g. things fall out of pockets, or brochures placed on the bed had a way of disappearing). Amenities like dressing gowns and slippers were provided in the wardrobe, and the bath and shower were both of good size. The only downside was that there was a musty odour in the bathroom. Free wifi is provided if you ask at reception for a username and password, although I found the connection to be incredibly poor.

Breakfast was okay; we arrived before it got too busy, and found the selection good, although the scrambled eggs were a bit on the bland side (like something you’d have in a school cafeteria). Overall, I would certainly recommend the Harte and Garter if you can get a room at a good price: the location is second to none and the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly.

Room Tip: We were in room 108 ... good size, great views, but loud. If you want a quieter room, then either s...

Had a good stay for 2 nights, got a really good deal on the internet for late bookings and ended up paying about a quarter of the usual rate. Good service and lovely room, had some castle views and a nice size room, though apparently some are quite small, ours was room 321 and had plenty of room. Breakfast took longer than I would have liked to be seated, had to ask for coffee, toast etc as wasnt offered any for the first 20 mins that we waited in the restaurant so paid an extra £3 to have it delivered to our room the next day and it came hot and on time, well worth the extra £3.

No parking but you can park in the loading bay to unload your bags and reception put them away for you. I then managed to get a space in the Eton & Riverside train station car park which is £7.50 per day and £2 on Sundays, you can also top up your parking by phone so I ended up leaving the car there for the three days. It was the cheapest option for car parking by far.
