“Sunday Lunch at The Potting Shed - The Dormy House Hotel.”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

15 of us, 6 children and 6 adults enjoyed Sunday lunch at The Potting Shed, an informal but beautifully decorated Bistro attached to The Dormy House Hotel. Normally anyone with children would take one look at this immaculate hotel and drive by out of sheer fear! This painstakingly decorated and beautiful hotel is not be missed by anyone but enjoyed! The meal, service, setting and value for money was exceptional. It has provided us all with a fond memory of our annual get to together!

Went to the Potting Shed for lunch today. Loved the setting and the ambience but both service and food were inconsistent. Nice welcome but we had to ask for menus twice and took over an hour before we got our first course. The poached duck egg was really good but a blue cheese and walnut salad had barely three small cubes of cheese. No bread either, even to accompany soup. We ordered a Malbec wine and enjoyed it, only realising later after we paid the bill that we had been given the most expensive one on the menu - my fault of course for not checking when presented with the bottle that it was the one intended. Mains were good though again one sea bass fillet seemed a little mean. The shared crumble desert was scrummy but chocolate brownies were far too dry and we're not at all chocolaty- ironically we sent back chocolate tarts brought to us in error and wished we hadn't. Overall disappointing for a birthday celebration. We may have been lunching late but a hotel with the Dormy's reputation has to be consistently great.

Picked the Dormy House for a two-day break after seeing the great reviews on TA and we were not disappointed. From the great welcome by the doorman in orange cords to THE best room I have slept in, it was everything I'd hoped for. The beds were unbelievably comfortable and were topped with fabulous feather duvets.
The food in both The Garden Room and the Potting Shed was delicious using interesting ingredients and beautiful presentation, and I loved the Spa, there was just not enough time to really enjoy it all.
There were a couple of disappointments; this hotel was immaculate in every way, so it was a surprise to find the previous guest's slippers under the bed!
The tour of the hotel given on arrival was a nice touch but I felt it had been done a hundred times before and was robotic.
The rate which included Dinner, Bed & Breakfast is only available for one night - if you stay a second night then the rate rises and this only includes B&B - in our instance, the rate rose by£50. We were aware of this before our visit, but it still doesn't stop it being a huge disappointment.
However the hotel is stunning in a beautiful area, with rooms which have every accessory you could want, the service is good and unobtrusive. I'd definitely return

Room Tip: i'm absolutely sure the rooms in this hotel are all beautiful !

Second visit, sadly the same experience.
A year or so ago we visited for lunch and the service was totally unacceptable, after receiving assurances from the manager that it wouldn't be the same I booked another family meal for 5. On arrival we were greeted by two or three male staff hanging around the entrance, they appeared to just be there to say hello, no opening the doors or directions offered! We found our way to the "Potting Shed" and we're eventually seated and handed menus, swiftly followed by a drinks order. It was then that the waiting began, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, first two courses took about an hour and a half, then we were left looking at our empty plates for half an hour with no attempt made by any of the waiting staff even make eye contact. It wasn't until we complained that we finally got some service. And so 3 hours later we emerged feeling tired and frustrated and nearly £200 lighter.

Spent some time looking for a spa hotel in the cotswolds and came across Dormy House. Looked to have all we were looking for, so booked a two day spa break and upgraded to a suite. Booked all spa treatments in advance and the staff could not have been more helpful. On arrival we were shown to "Rose Cottage" one of the suites in it's own garden, very picturesque. The room was very well appointed with all "mod cons", the hotel had provided complimentary champagne as we were there to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. Over the next two days we enjoyed some fantastic spa treatments and facillities. We eat in the "potting shed" on the first night which was very good and the garden room the second night which is fine dining. The overall experience here was just what we were looking for and all the staff were helpful and freindly, very relaxed. We will definatley go again and we can throughly recommend it to all who are looking to be spoilt. All I can say is "what a find"

Room Tip: There is such a variety of rooms at different price breaks. Rose Cottage is exeptional, but The Atti...

This was our first trip to Dormy House and it will certainly not be our last. It a very romantic place to visit as a couple (currently 2nd most romantic place in the UK to stay). It certainly lived up to our expectations and has set the bar very high for some of the other hotels in the Cotswolds who probably should not rest on their laurels for too much longer.
Having only recently been refurbished it is a stunningly decorated hotel.
We were also upgraded to the one of the suites - The Snug and it was a lovely suite. We particularly liked the fact that a good quality coffee machine was provided in the room along with a kettle so we did to have to ring down for room service just to get a hot drink. We also liked the ipad in the room which was the room directory but could also be used for the internet. The bathroom was amazing with a large stainless steel tub.
Everything about the hotel including the service was to a very high standard.
Its modern styling was reflected in the atmosphere which made it a very relaxing and unstuffy.
The spa was also great but could have done with having some more loungers around the pool. Unfortunately there is not enough space for any more - a plea to all future spa designers please allow enough room for guests to be able to sit/lie down - we go there to use the spa and relax and it is no fun fighting over a few loungers. To be fair this is a common problem at most spas. Also it was a bit hot and could have done with being cooler.
We had dinner in The Potting Shed as The Garden Room was closed as it was a Sunday. The food and service was great but unfortunately it was slightly marred by being sat next to a group of 6 with a young baby. As a consequence we were concious of all the usual paraphenalia of a baby such as a pushchair, bottles etc and the mother constantly having to leave the table to settle the baby followed by other guests trying to help. While we have no issue with children being in restaurants we find as a rule that when dining after 8pm in the evening it is nice to have some adult time and it is not really fair on the other guests to have to tolerate this, particularly when they have left their own family at home to get away for a romantic break. We ended up taking coffee in one of the sitting rooms to get away from the table.
We had breakfast the following morning in The Garden room and again it was great service and lovely food.

Room Tip: The suites are lovely if you want a separate sitting area but I would imagine all the rooms are love...

I had done my research this time as my previous choices of a surprise venue to which to whisk The Wife away to had been medicore at best. Now I'm not really into this sort of going-away-for-a-night-just-for-the-sake-of-it thing but I have to say it was absolutely marvellous.
My close friend in womens' beauty media recommended The Dormy House so I rang to enquire about the possibility of a one night stay at the weekend. "Minimum two night stay over a weekend", I was told at first but when I told the lady in Reservations I could only get away for one night as I am a dairy farmer she quickly got back to me with a one night deal. So full marks for flexibility there!
Welcome and Check in were charming and the Loft room No.24 was outstanding in every respect - the huge stainless steel bath was great fun although we were sure the guests in the room below may not have shared our enjoyment as it makes a hell of a noise whilst it fills!
Saturday night dinner was superb, in a lovely spacious room and great value but what set it apart was the service from the highly trained and motivated (French?) waiting staff. Time after time a great meal is ruined by surly, disinterested and, dare I say, student sourced staff who have no knowledge of the food and wine they are serving - not in this case. The waiting staff were polite, knowledgable and excellent in every way.
The next morning, after an excellent breakfast, I had booked Wife in for an hour's treatment so I was able to read my bike magazines in one the very comfortable lounges. Finally at Check-out, we were given some water and a few biscuits for the journey home.
The only grumbles were very minor - the air-con unit made a bit of a racket at the foot of the bed and the bed seemed to be dome-shaped and I kept falling out of it - or maybe it was just me?!
We will be returning next year but next time......for two nights!

Room Tip: Not telling! You may want to book at the same time as us next time!
