“Quintessentially English!”
Reviewed 28 December 2013

We took my parents away for the weekend and stayed in this hotel in October. It's a beautiful building with carved wood-panelled walls, creaking wood and stone flagged floors, and lots of history. It's situated right in the middle of the pretty village of Broadway; there is a big car park to be found at the back of the hotel reached by a little back road, together with extensive gardens and a, shall we say, rather tired tennis court. There is a lovely courtyard separating the old and newer parts of the hotel. Our rooms were in the new part on the ground floor and they were fine, with a small patio area outside. There's a small pool and that was pretty good, we didn't have time to try the other health spa treatments etc. The food was good; we ate in the hotel on the first night, the staff were polite and attentive. On the second night we ate in the Swan just down the road and the food there was very nice, slightly better in my opinion. The hotel is well placed for the Cotswolds area and Broadway itself has some lovely little shops. We also went to Bourton on the water and that is only about half an hour away, a very pretty place, well worth a visit. All in all this is a lovely hotel, not cheap and check your bill as there were one or two discrepancies, though quickly sorted out.

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the old part which has the rooms with character

The Lygon Arms and Broadway offer a charming setting for the days before Christmas. The hotel was elegantly decorated and the public rooms with open fires were comfortable roosts during some of the wettest days of 2013. As with many Oxford colleges, the bedrooms are in 1960s/1970s accommodation blocks, not in the original Cotswold stone building. My room was large, bright and very quiet; this is a hotel which has mastered sound insulation.
The restaurant is fine, friendly, reasonable value. The wine-list included stupendously expensive bottles but also plenty of pleasant whites and reds of a kind found in smart supermarkets.
Staff kind, friendly, keen to put everyone at ease although I'm uncertain why anyone would not automatically feel perfectly at home from the first moment of arriving.

We stayed in room 52-53 on December 23rd... We invited some friends down as we had stayed before. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the fires were burning! The atmosphere was perfect and the staff couldn't be more helpful. We had lunch and breakfast and the food was perfectly prepared. The bar staff were more than attentive when it came to refilling your pint... An excellent start to the festive week and ill we can say is thank you for a relaxing and wonderful stay. A great place to stay! We will see you same time next year!

We enjoyed our stay at The lygon arms for our Christmas holiday. We were greeted with a very warm welcome by the staff and shown to our room in the newer part of the hotel. The hotel was very festive with decorations, Christmas trees and lit open fires in most rooms. We were shown to our room and found a gift and plant were left for us. .Christmas Eve started with a drinks reception followed by a 4 course meal. The food and wine were superb. Christmas morning breakfast was traditional or continental. The hotel has a lovely atmosphere and very relaxing. Christmas lunch was traditional and very enjoyable. Boxing Day morning the broadway came alive as hundreds of people arrived to watch the hunt leave the village. Mulled wine and mince pies were served in the hotel afterward. The dinner dance in the evening was a black tie event, with a tasteful 4 course meal and live entertainment, this finished the Christmas holiday perfectly. We will be returning again next year.

Room Tip: If you have a dog the ground floor rooms are ideal as they have doors straight onto your own patio a...

We stayed 2 nights at the Lygon as a pre-Christmas treat, and it was lovely. I upgraded to a premier room and my only niggle was that the room we had was smaller than expected and quite ordinary. However, the hotel was wonderful and of course is in a fantastic location. We ate one night in the restaurant and the food was stunning. Excellent value and great service. Drinks are pricey but that is to be expected. Breakfast was good but service was a bit slow. We arrived an hour before service finished and the buffet was in a mess, and half empty. However, the English breakfast was spot on. All in all, a lovely place to stay but probably best to get a special offer to really get value from the Lygon Arms.

Room Tip: Make sure you are in the main hotel!

Fantastic building, with excellent period furniture, but service also seems to be a little in the past too. Very polite, and courteous, but all a little slow. Stayed for a night while dining elsewhere in Broadway, and our children were at their Grandma's. I think it needs a pep up, in terms of speed of service, but still a good place to stay.

Have just returned from a lovely weekend staying at the Lygon Arms, where I celebrated my 40th birthday with my family. The staff were fantastic; extremely professional with real warmth and friendliness. I cannot recommend them (all) highly enough. The food was consistently excellent. The location was, naturally, stunning. Treated myself to a hot stone massage at the Hotel Spa, which was one of the best I've had.

I stayed in Room 44 (in the original building). It was extremely clean and warm. In my opinion, the rooms are the weakest aspect of the hotel, and I was, perhaps, slightly disappointed. But the overall impression was of a fantastic weekend, and I will definitely be returning.
