“Room 8 at the Lygon”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

Quaint four poster bedroom in older part of hotel overlooks the high street of Broadway. Lovely room and bathroom. Receptionist very helpful with ideas of where to go in village. We had an excellent cream tea at broadway hotel patio overlooking street theatre and Morris dancers on the green a very pleasant summer afternoon. I would hAve rated sleep as excellent but fire alarm in afternoon after arrival and a further one in the morning before breakfast was a little frustrating and this then impacted on a delay in being seated and served breakfast. I am sure the hotel had residents welfare in mind and evacuated the hotel on both occasions and it turned out to be false all arms so hopefully this has now been rectified.

Room Tip: Room 8 four poster but up two flights of stairs.

Great place to stay for exploring Cotswolds. Not exceptional food but not sure Great Hall is that impressive. It looked better years ago with tapestries and different lights and more in keeping with a medieval banquesting hall. Food choices limited and expensive. No ambiance. Tradtional rooms great looking but the buiding has been adapted to take bathrooms etc so its not surprising things creak!

Booked afternoon tea as a birthday treat for a friend. There were 7 adults and one toddler and none of us had experienced afternoon tea at the Lygon before so we were all looking forward to it, and we weren't disappointed.
The staff had reserved a small room just for our use and set it all out ready. This was great because it meant our two year old could run around the room and enjoy herself exploring and not disturb other guests.
When the 'tea' arrived it was a wonder to behold. I have had afternoon tea at a couple of different hotels in Worcestershire but this was truly a sight to behold.
A choice of finger sandwiches, brown and white bread, lovely and fresh; the quintessential cucumber on white as well as ham, egg and cress and smoked salmon with cream cheese.
Large home made scones which were so fresh they were almost warm and a nice jam and clotted cream to top them off.
And the piece de resistance, a selection of cakes which included, battenburg, fruit tarts, macaroons, white chocolate brownies, double chocolate brownies, brownies with nuts and a chocolate fudge cake along with little glasses of raspberry mousse with a raspberry coulis on top. One each of most things and more than enough to satisfy the biggest hunger. As a matter of fact, there was a fair bit 'left over' and the staff were only too happy to bring us boxes so we could 'doggy bag' it away.
The duty manager was really helpful and showed a couple of members of the party the room that Oliver Cromwell had stayed in and all the staff were friendly and couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome. There was also no hurry for us to finish and leave. A very laid back experience.
I would really recommend it. Although it is more expensive than some hotels it is by no means the most expensive I have seen and you really do get what you pay for. A great place to take someone special with the added benefit of being able to look around a really beautiful, quaint town with some unique shops.

Elegant, atmospheric and friendly.
The front part of the hotel is full of interesting, very personal spaces to meet and talk and take English Tea. History oozes from the Tudor and Jacobean rooms. I am biased as we had a great anniversary staying in the Great Chamber and having a fabulous meal in the Resteraunt. I was concerned to see the two coaches of Japanese tourists arrive only to be proved completely wrong in the way that they were absorbed quietly into the hotel & the Resteraunt without disturbing the peace of the hotel and we're not in the least bit dominating. There is a croquet and tennis court that is tucked away in the back and probably missed by many guests. When we stayed the Spa was out of action, but at least they told us three weeks before and so it was not a surprise.
A definite place to return to but I would ensure I was in the historic front of the hotel again.

My friend and I booked a last minute spa break away staying on a Sunday (15/05/2014) Had heard great reviews so was excited to go. Arriving in the hotel it felt very grand and the hotel itself was beautiful. Check in was great woman on reception very helpful and even got a quick tour before having bags taken to the room. Room also was beautiful and very comfortable. Both had a treatment and again the service by beauty staff was excellent.

But from there it went downhill. In a nutshell:

* Fire alarm went off during the treatment which is off putting when you cannot relax again despite it being a false alarm!
*Fire alarm went off again whilst in the pool area -another false alarm!
* Hot tub was out of action. Booked onto a spa package I expect all facilities to be open
* Workmen trapsing through the pool area to store room behind loungers. Had no shoe covers on -which probably contributed to numerous "bits" in the pool including leaves, mud, stones and a fly!
* Not a great selection of food at the grand hall for dinner. Hotel needed more choice for fussy eaters. My friend could not eat anything on the menu (as does not eat fish or red meat) and when she asked the waiter for chicken instead of lamb told the kitchen had no chicken, only to get her way after persuasion. However the portions were very small -nicely presented- but not adequate. We both were left hungry after dinner. We were shocked as we had a lovely lunch in the bar, loads of choice and proper portions- so much so we actually had to leave food there was too much!
* Same can be said for breakfast. Continental selection was poor again needed more variety. Waiters did not top up our toast when empty and had a hard job getting more, also the same for getting more tea. Hot food not up to standard, again tiny portions of everything (and bacon sausage was nothing fancy) infact my bacon could still of been oinking! Again both friend and I still hungry after breakfast.

The hotel was beautiful however too many flaws in it to make the stay not enjoyable. Think it caters more for the tourists who want that "proper english" experience but obviously this does not cater for all. Had it not been for the fact we were on a spa package and got a good deal I would not of been impressed paying full whack. Get a better food choice (maybe more of the lounge menu on the dinner menu) and sort the pool area out. I couldnt see much of renovation work when I was there. But the staff I couldnt fault in all fairness.

Very dissapointed :(

Dear Guest, Thankyou for your comments, I am delighted the reception and spa team looked after you so well and that your room was so comfortable. However I do apologise about the fire alarms. We are a grade 1 listed building so we take fire risk very seriously, as a result we evacuate as a precuation for all fire alarms. We do not usually have the amount of fire alarms that you experienced. I am sorry you were not happy with the menu choice in the great hall. We are a 2 AA Rosette fine dining restaurant we have a TDH menu which changes daily with a 3 choice per course, aswell as an a la carte menu which does not change. We value your insight and be assured all issues raised will be addressed with the team. Best Regards Rebecca Peniket

We stayed for just one night with a special deal found on the internet for dinner, bed and breakfast. I phoned to ask if we could book in the old part of the hotel rather than annex, was told they would try but could not guarantee. Anyway, we checked in after an exhausting journey to find an absolutely gorgeous room waiting for us, medieval hearth with a sitting area as well as king sized bed and lovely soft furnishings. It was so spacious we nearly rattled around in it! Dinner in the 2 rosette restaurant was elegant and beautifully prepared. The service was very attentive without hovering, and the dining room is an old minstrel hall and just lovely. The staff were so helpful, friendly, seemed genuinely pleased to see you and help you. There are several little nooks and crannies for lounges that you can read the paper, have a drink, it is such a cozy place. The 600-year history of this is felt in every corner of the hotel, but it is not stuffy and deserves all the accolades you can view on the walls! Lots of famous people have stayed here, from Liz Taylor to Kate Moss.

Room Tip: Room 17 is just a few steps up a crooked, winding ancient staircase and felt very private, spacious...
