“Elegant and comfortable, with a few minor suggestions...”
Reviewed 3 November 2011

A beautiful country house, elegantly furnished, which is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for somewhere above average.

Having said that, our stay could have been improved in a few minor ways:

We arrived at 4pm and were greeted by a young (Polish?) girl, who hastily took us to our Garden Suite room, led us into the en-suite bathroom (why do people feel the need to do this? I feel sure we would have managed to find it by ourselves), pointed out where breakfast would be served than disappeared.

The room was elegantly furnished, with full tea and coffee facilities and mini fridge. If I was being picky, I could express surprise that they had used a standard chain-hotel type fixture for these facilities (fixed plastic tray into which the kettle sits to boil), although it was neatly hidden in a cupboard.

There is a television, yet for some reason it only received BBC1 which was a little frustrating.

The bathroom was very well appointed, with large bath and excellent shower. Fluffy bathrobes provided. And no, there is no door between this and the bedroom, but it is up three steps and the toilet is tucked right around the corner in an alcove so I really don't see this as an issue.

We headed into Broadway for early dinner at 7pm (in the car - it's a little too far to walk back in the dark as no pavements or street lamps), only to find that every restaurant was fully book so settled for a Tandoori which was our only option. Clearly that is not the B&B proprietor's fault, but for a £160+ a night establishment, one would expect extra touches such as providing details of dinner options in the village and advising booking a table.

However, the bed was extremely comfortable, with a luxuriously puffy duvet, and we both enjoyed a very good night's sleep.

It was just a pity that the girl who had let us in the day before had failed to tell the owner that we had actually arrived, so we had the disturbance of someone rattling our bedroom door at about 8am trying to get in whilst we were still in bed. We called out that we were there, at which point the gentleman apologised and walked off. This was then repeated about 10 minutes later as we were just out of the shower, this time by a woman who also apologised and beat a hasty retreat. It was a good job that we can locked the door from the inside otherwise they would have both walked straight in.

The owner was chatty and sincerely apologetic when we went down for breakfast, with a slightly upper class 'oh what a mix-up' tone, but again, when you are paying this amount of money for a room you do not expect such disturbances just because they can't organise the paid help properly.

Breakfast was served in the elegant dining room, with cereals, fruit, yoghurt etc laid out and a choice of cooked options. We were the only guests that night so plenty on offer.

Would recommend if you are happy to pay for superior, comfortable surroundings with a touch of upper class eccentricity, although we will probably be trying somewhere else on our next visit to this area.

The Mill Hay Country House is an absolutely perfect get-away. Spectacular gardens and views from every room with every comfort and convenience. Hospitality can't be beat, the owner couldn't do enough to make our stay more enjoyable. We were embraced like friends and family. Breakfast is sumptuous and yummy with many more choices then needed. Overall, a winner!

During an August 2011 getaway to the UK, I scheduled two nights at Mill Hay House to coincide with my 50th birthday. I couldn't have made a better choice.

The home is beautiful and well kept, with a warm, inviting feel throughout. You almost feel like family after ten minutes. Both Annetta (the owner) and Elaine made us feel special, whether it was through interesting conversation about the home itself and the town of Broadway, or through their terrific service.

Breakfast was delicious, the special treat of afternoon tea and snacks was perfect following a day of hiking, and the atmosphere relaxing. Although there are three guest rooms, I can only speak for the Garden Suite, which was stunning. I noticed some reviewers who complained about the lack of a door to the suite's bathroom, but trust me, given the layout you really don't need it. If you're that puckered about a door, you need way more R&R than a B&B can give you. ;)

I would also strongly recommend spending time in the nearby town. The people were nice, the food was good, and the pubs just fine. Plan on hiking up to the remarkable Broadway Tower, too. I wish I could've spent more time, but that only means I'll need to plan a return trip.

Five-star-rating from me, and cheers to Annetta and Elaine for making my 50th celebration just perfect.

Mill Hay Country House and grounds are beautiful, and we received a warm welcome from Annette on arrival. The breakfast was lovely too, comprising of fresh fruit juices, fruit salad and a wide choice of cooked foods. We stayed in the rose garden room, which is lovely, but the furniture does look a little tired and for the £160 a night tariff, we thought that this should have been updated. There is a bath and shower, however you have to hold the shower head as there is no attachment. We enjoyed our stay at Mill Hay.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the more expensive Garden Suite

My husband and I have just returned from a 3 night stay at Mill Hay. After originally booking the Rosegarden Room we switched to the Garden Suite after realising the Rosegarden Room has no shower, and I'm extremely glad we did. It was a lovely room with a beautiful 4 poster bed. The decor was very tasteful and the bathroom an adequate size. We actually didn't mind that there was no door on the bathroom, as at home our bedroom and en-suite bathroom is all open plan, so we're quite use to it. We really appreciated the complimentary coffee/glass of wine on arrival, as well as the aperitifs in the evening. Breakfast was fairly average, despite the fancy-sounding menu, and it did take a while to arrive. On our first morning the toast was very burnt, and we were surprised it was served to us given the attention to detail that has gone into everything else. Annette, the owner, is very friendly and tries very hard; in fact, a tad too hard; she should try and relax a bit! Overall, it's a beautiful house furnished to a high standard. We'd definitely consider staying again.

Mill Hay is a true gem! Annette made us feel at home immediately and prepared the most wonderful breakfast every morning. The rooms are wonderful - we had the room with balcony and enjoyed our prosecco and lunch from Daylesford Organic in the sun overlooking the beautiful garden. Annette recommended us nice restaurants and we chilled out in front of the fireplace with a nice aperitif before walking into town at night. We’ll be back! A wonderful choice for a romantic getaway.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights at the Mill Hay Country House in Broadway, June 14th and 15th, 2011. Think of the best place you've ever stayed. This place will beat it. It's a place that will exceed even your imagination. You couldn't ask for more: wonderful hostess, stunningly beautiful location, gorgeous room, exceptional breakfasts, wonderful towns of Broadway and Snowhill and serenity personified.

Room Tip: Whatever you pay, it's worth it.
