Just returned from a one night stay at Wood Norton. The hotel consists of the main 1897 house and the Pear Tree annex with more modern (and inexpensive) rooms.

We opted for the annex but checked out a couple of rooms in the main building to compare (for £50 more). They were nice but we decided not to pay the extra and our room was just fine for the night - nicely furnished and roomy enough.

As it was we paid £99 for two for B&B and then ate in the bar (rather than the restaurant). I whole stay ended up at £135 for room, dinner and breakfast. One can easily pay that for musty, second rate places, so we were pleased with this.

The service, from reception to waiting staff, was friendly throughout. Would have been a nice touch to have been offered a morning newspaper though.

This was our second visit to the Wood Norton, on the first occasion the Hotel had just opened and there was a problem with the heating in our room and the manager at the time offered us a return visit which we were pleased to accept.
We could not have had a better experience. The staff were excellent in every department, Craig the manager was extremely hospitable and helpful. We both agreed that the food was some of the best we had ever had and the room was perfect. What more can i say other than if your looking for a first class ,wonderfully run hotel, look no further, you will not be disappointed.

Upon arrival, there had been an error in our booking. After explaining this to the reception manager we had a free upgrade to the Bridal Suite!

This was offered without any problem and gratefully accepted.

What a beautiful authentic hotel. Nothing was perfect because it is an old building and this added to the wonderful experience.

All staff were exceptionally polite and nothing was too much trouble. In the bar my wife discovered Chase Potato Vodka!

Our afternoon snack of squid and whitebait was divine.

After a relaxing few hours in our suite we were ready to eat...

Warm brown and white homemade bread rolls, butter and a butternut squash amuse bouche

This was followed by monkfish with oxtail for myself and scallops for my wife

Then a palate cleansing yogurt sorbet

Mains were Venison for me and Rabbit for her

We sipped away at our Prosecco and then enjoyed our desserts. Chocolate Brownie for me and pistachio and almond cake for my wife...

Then to finish off Cheese and biscuits followed by Coffee with petit fours

Wonderful...

Slept well...

Breakfast was a complete selection of all... I had Eggs Royale - beautiful and my wife decided to have the locally sourced Full English which she is still talking about...

All in all a fantastic night away and will certainly be coming back in the future.

Dear SupermanWestMidlands

A nice interesting read, thank you. Glad you liked the William Chase Vodka, (it is made from the potatoes of Tyrells' Crisps by the way). We have just added Black Cow Vodka to the bar stock too, made fermented from curds and whey, very nice.

Do keep visiting us, we are developing the product all of the time.

We stayed here for my birthday in October, only for one night as we met up with distant family. Its a delightful hotel with a lovely atmosphere, we had afternoon tea but had booked to go to a restaurant near the hotel, I will in the near future book a weekend break there, if the food is anything like the breakfast and afternoon tea, I'm sure it will be wonderful!

Stayed in a room in the main hotel on the first floor. Very spacious and tastefully decorated respecting the buildings rich heritage. Although the hotel is only 116 years old it did feel much older and added to the experience enjoyed. From the minute we checked in the staff were helpful and polite. The food was good and I enjoyed the cooked breakfast, very nice. Once the function room is completed and the car parking and landscaping sorted out it will be fine. The view from our room more than made up for that. Well done!

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel, not one of the exterior rooms.

Dear Portised

Thank you for your complimentary review after your recent stay with us. We were so pleased to read that you had a nice time, and look forward to welcoming you back soon. By the way the function suite that was being built is completed now. It looks amazing, and went up in under 4 months, so hopefully reducing any impact on our guests.
It will also mean that in the future any larger groups such as weddings and parties can dine in the new suite, leaving space in the main building for everyone else to relax in.

Best Regards

We stayed here for 2 nights as we were attending a wedding nearby. We opted for a room in the converted stable block as it was a little bit cheaper.

Greeted in reception and checking in was smooth and simple. The reception area did seem rather compact, and if there were several people trying to all check in at once, I think it could be cramped, for the staff and guests.

We went back outside and walked up the slope to the block our room was in. I don't think there is a lift in this block, but only a ground and first floor so it was fine. The hotel has had a huge and very expensive make over fairly recently, so everything was in good, clean condition. The room colours (I saw several rooms which friends were staying in) would not be my choice, and some looked rather drab and made the room seem dark. BUT the rooms were very comfortable. A wonderful big (6ft) bed. It had a feather topper and then a very thick mattress protector on, making sure we got a great nights sleep!

The bathroom was great, a powerful shower, heated mirror and nice toiletries. Some of the rooms in the main building seemed to have bathrobes and slippers (more expensive rooms,) but ours did not.
The breakfast was delicious and cooked to order with lots of choice. On the morning after the wedding, (a Sunday,) as there were so many wedding guests staying, we were all seated at one long table which was rather nice! Everyone was given 'the full English breakfast,' and not given a menu to choose from. I am not sure if this is always the case on a Sunday or what. The staff serving were polite and friendly.

The only things which rather let the side down were the bar staff. They made no effort to engage in conversation at all. They did not smile and only seemed to be bothered about producing a slip for you to sign if adding drinks to your room bill.

We also had a meal in the bar and as soon as we had ordered our main course we were presented with slips to sign, and again after the puddings. It got very irratating to have to do it immediately. I really feel there must be a better system that could be used here. Other hotels seem to manage it without making the guests feel they almost can't be trusted not to run off without signing!

Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would happily stay again. The grounds and views were lovely. The history of the hotel is fascinating and the bar, lounge areas, snooker room, and dining room are all lovely with old wooden panelling. There is still more building work going on, and I am sure it will only enhance what is already lovely.

Dear MissSunshine15

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, some good observations and feedback there that I will share with the team. Just to clarify, as your group were 60 strong and all dining for breakfast at the same time we decided to offer all full English for breakfast to everyone rather than try to take individual orders.

I hope the wedding was a success.

With Kind Regards

Booked the Princess Louise suite - you enter into a nice seating area with a fabulous view (even a little terrace to step out on at warmer times of the year!) and have your bedroom off through a door to the left and your bathroom to the right. The suite is a very good size, the bathroom in particular being gorgeous (separate walk-in shower and huge bath) and there's plenty of comfy sitting areas throughout. The quality you get here is extremely good particularly given they've not priced it exorbitantly - I'd happily pay the same room rate again, knowing the room standard. The only couple of points I'd mention here would be that perhaps a bit more dusting for cobwebs could be done (although we appreciate with the wood panelling this could be trickier than more modern rooms) and that it's incredibly difficult to do your make-up as there is no well-lit area anywhere in the suite. Minor points - wouldn't put me off.

We also drank at the bar and ate in the restaurant - again quality of food etc., no issues. A few recommendations could be made on the service front (e.g. having staff on the bar, professionalism of some reception staff). However, this is entirely possibly due to us visiting on a Sunday, when they were very quiet and at points throughout our evening/check-out we received excellent service.

There's currently a bit of building work going on outside (Dec 13) - this only causes parking complications, no noise issues etc. Highly recommended for a bit of a get away.
