“Cracking Friday night in the bar, good quality Sunday roast”
Reviewed 29 October 2013

In Malvern for a long weekend. Started at the top of the hill trying several pubs, this was the last, bar, on our way back to our weekend stay.

Cracking night, watching Miss Pearl and the Rough Diamonds (local band, catch them if you can) - full of friendly locals, visitors to that evenings performance at the local Theatre and amazing bar staff - Go.

Late Friday evening Jeremy (manager) booked us a window seat for Sunday lunch, in the dog friendly bar area. Thinking we were all a bit worse for wear on the Friday, pleasantly surprised to find our table reserved, and a warm welcome back!

£7.95 for roast beef and all the trimmings? Can't go wrong - perfect and generous. My partner had the steak and merlot pie with all the trimmings that would come with the roast, just ask!

The hotel itself is undergoing some refurbishment, according to my partner the ladies toilet, which has just been finished, is lovely (if that's your thing re impressions of establishments, etc) and at the time of writing the roof is being re-tiled - haven't stayed here, but the warm welcome is sufficient enough for me to conclude that you would have a great stay, and the place is busy!

More places could learn how a pleasant, friendly, efficient staff go a long long way to creating good impressions.

I recommend, and look forward to coming back.

Solid, old-school building, reminiscent of sunny childhood holidays on a Victorian prom. but with up to date staff who enjoy giving service where your satisfaction and enjoyment are paramount. Clean throughout with interesting good quality decor. Excellent breakfast choice. Cereal, yoghurt, grapefruit, and a full English as long as your arm. "I'll have a kipper" "would sir like an egg on top?" "no thank you, just as it comes" "TWO kippers?" followed by amusement about the collective noun for kippers. Lift to all floors, ours was a large room with en suite, comfortable bed with good bedding, television and broadband, and a proper bath; just right after a long walk in the hills. The night was quiet despite being close to a busy road junction. Owners of long cars might find the parking a little tight but then the hotel is situated centre of town with limited space, being close to the theatre, shops, park and amenities. The staircase was a constant source of amusement as climbing the one we last descended brought us back to a different part of the hotel (we worked it out in the end). Such a reasonably priced double, I asked if that was per person? It would be our first enquiry on a return visit. The biggest surprise was seeing two stars on the sign and not more.

We stayed in this hotel as part of a walking group so perhaps they felt that walkers had low standards and are happy to put up with anything.
My room and those of the other guests were not clean, I got sticky fingers when moving a notice on the bathroom shelf, there was plenty of dust everywhere, and worst of all, when I went to have my shower there was lots of matted hair behind the taps. One other guest found a half eaten pizza under her bed, another had a leak in the bathroom ceiling so were supplied with a bucket and cloth.
The staff seemed indifferent to everything, and the manager really quite uninterested in the guests and their needs, I feel he is in the wrong profession and really should do another job where he doesn't need people skills.
The food for a group booking was the worst we have ever had. I can't comment on food bought at the bar. The food was grey and tasteless. We were given no choice of starter and a soup was plonked in front of us each night, no-one could tell us what it was, and no one in our group could tell by the taste. On the first night, we had a choice of two mains, which was dolloped on plates for us, just like school dinners, unfortunately they didn't taste as good. They had not prepared anything for the vegetarians in the group so they had to wait for ages for what was not a very nice meal. The second night we were allowed to help ourselves to the main course, which was slightly better in flavour, but the soup starter was just as bad if not worse than the first night. There was fruit salad, first night 2 large bowls, second night one bowl then half a bowl put out for breakfast. On the positive, the breakfasts were good, hot and fresh.
This hotel seems to be concentrating on the live music it offers and it appears as if they would rather not bother with the hotel side. I think that if the owners ran a pub it would be fantastic.

Room Tip: Rooms above the bar are noisy due to the live music

Stayed one weekend, so pleased, we stayed the following for one night originally, then decided we would like to stay a second and were told we could stay in the same room....no problem/no fuss.
The hotel may be busy on a Friday night with in-house entertainment, but as a resident, you would be unaware. Rooms are big and spacious: the bathroom clean. Breakfast is in a spacious Lounge and the service is excellent from buffet to cooked. The "in house bar" is well stocked and if you simply want to relax, there is a delightful lounge. Enjoyed a Sunday Roast and all in all, this may be a two star hotel, but the service and accommodation were way above that mark!

We regularly use the hotel for our fortnightly club meetings. The service and support we receive from the hotel is outstanding, everybody we work with is extremely helpful, polite and efficient. The hotel is conveniently located in central Malvern with easy access for all our members.

We stayed at the Great Malvern Hotel to walk in the Malvern Hills and found it to be an excellent centre for this. The hotel is in the centre of Great Malvern. It is clean, comfortable and the staff are really friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble for them and the whole atmosphere is informal and relaxed.
The breakfasts are excellent and the evening meals are very good value for money with quick efficient service. Bar prices are extremely reasonable.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to walk in the Malvern Hills or those simply wanting good accommodation in Great Malvern.
