“Not a hint of the World Cup - great!!!”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

Our 2nd visit to this charming ancient pub with its well kept real beers and ciders and, of course, the delicious pie and mash menu. If you're not sure which ale to try they'll happily make recommendations and give you a free taster. Don't be put off if you're not a real ale fan, they sell good lagers and wines too.

The best thing here last night was the lack of footie. Neither I nor my companions are football fans (shock! horror!) and it seems that whilst the World Cup is on, every pub in the country is given over to screening it, talking about it and covering the exterior with England flags. Yuk!

In the 'Charlie' (as we now call it!) the only visible celebration of being English was brilliantly confined to a troupe of Morris dancers performing outside (and then, naturally, coming inside for a few beers!). There was even a rumour that one of the dancers -all of whom looked as old as the pub itself!!!- was the originator of the 'recipe' of one of the beers on sale. Now that would never happen in your local Marston's pub!

“good beer, good pies!”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

This has been done out by two local breweries who also supply the ales. A lovely setting especially in winter when the log fires are burning. They sell pieminister pies with mash, peas and amazing gravy. A firm favourite!

“Good Beer and Food”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

I had lunch with a few friends this week and must say I was impressed with the choice of beers. The food was also good but a bit limited in choice between a selection of pies or a ploughmans. Despite the lack of choice the pies were very good ( I had a steak and kidney) followed by a baked apple dish with a hint of whisky and ice cream.
The barman let us sample one or two of the beers which was good and we stayed in this hostelry all afternoon rather than move elsewhere such was the quality of the beers.
I feel that the introduction of a few extra basic meals like ham eggs and chips, lasagne, spaghetti bolognese etc etc would make this an even more attractive venue but overall we will certainly be returning next time we have a get together in Worcester.

“Great place for lunch”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Really nice place. Great selection of real ales (10 on tap the day we went!) and well kept and served. Great welcome, friendly staff. Great Pie n Mash meals for £8.95, really good value and proper pies. All in the building that house King Charles Haedquarters during the Battle for Worcester during the Civil War. A real bit of history.
