“AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!!. EXTREMELY RUDE AND ARROGANT STAFF!!!!”
Reviewed 7 January 2014

We booked new years eve for the function and room. Both of these were fine but the real issue was them 'swiping' your debit card to just hold details until you check out the next day when full payment was then taken off my card BUT they failed to tell me they had taken a further £100 the night before when they had 'merely swiped' my card to hold the details!!
It then took 5 working days for that money to appear back on my card and become accessible.
When I telephoned to complain the first person I spoke to said no amount should have gone off my card only the details are stored and they would investigate and come back to me.
2 days later I duly spoke to the person who took the card details the night we checked in and he claimed he had done nothing wrong and that ALL hotels did this paying you the money back at a later date. I said this was incorrect to which he then tried to blame my bank!!
He was then extremely rude and aggressive when I said I wanted to speak to the manager and he proceeded to put the phone down on me!!
I called straight back and issued a complaint to which he then alleged I had sworn at him and he was in fact still on the phone but not speaking to me??!! What??!!. I certainly did want to swear at the rude insolent arrogant upstart at that point!!!!!!
So now I will be issuing a formal complaint and wanting an explanation.
BUT if you do book DO NOT let them swipe your card or you''ll find you end up paying twice!!!!!!!! As well as having to deal with staff that DO NOT know customer etiquette...

What a terrible combination of Laterooms and Fownes! I have been duped into taking a room for two nights at Fownes because of their very sneaky cancellation policy. Even though the Late rooms website offers full cancellation refund if cancelled up to the day before the confirmation booking sneaks in that cancellation is not possible and all the money has already been taken. Laterooms don't want to know and the hotel adamantly refuses to refund even though I can no longer attend. DONT USE THIS HOTEL. This is a sly manoeuvre to basically illegally take your money that Laterooms turns a blind eye to.

Room Tip: Use a different hotel with a legal cancellation policy.

Stayed here over Christmas period from 24th-27th December as family live nearby but could not accommodate us. Found hotel very comfortable, clean and ideal for what we wanted. Did not eat in the hotel as we went to family for breakfast etc. Excellent location in relation to the High Street & Cathedral and for the first time ever went to the Sales on Boxing Day and left husband in bed !

Furniture in room was a little tired, but for what we paid it was good value. Bed comfortable and nice bathroom. Would stay again.

Stayed for one night on business. Hotel is being refurbished but looks like only cosmetically, room carpet was grubby and heavily stained, furniture old and worn. Did not eat in hotel so cannot comment. Staff were friendly and efficient at check in. Hotel parking is monitored by private parking company and you have to make sure you register your car on arrival or get hit with a £100 parking notice as a colleague found out. Overall adequate for a one night stay on business but would avoid if planning longer or on holiday.

We stayed for 2 nights in the week before Christmas 2013 and the hotel was very quiet. Reception staff were helpful with ideas of alternative eating places. Room was very comfortable; slight scuffs on furniture did not detract from positives - everything very clean, lots of space, small sofa, desk/ dressing table, small table with two chairs, lots of storage, lovely high ceilings, good bathroom and very comfortable bed.

Breakfast was well cooked and presented. Hotel location is close to town, across dual carriageway; free parking was appreciated. We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor room which did not suffer from road noise despite dual carriageway. In summer...

Stayed with wife for 2 nights Sat/Sun and had a reasonable experience. Room was OK with decent bath and everything seemed to work. Staff are generally good. Had dinner first night which was quite good. Saturday also hosted a large party that took up one of the bars and also exhausted some of the drinks choice! Very noisy but finished at midnight so OK - was clearly audible from room. We had room only rate as rarely have breakfast although did so on the Monday and reasonable choice available to order. Something wrong with the coffee machine as very very strong!
Hotel is on a busy road but did not notice any noise intrusion from this and one needs to cross this for the town centre but pelican crossings close by.
Register car details on arrival and importance of this being correct is emphasised so i guess there have been issues before with this. The car park is right next to a public one so it would be tempting to use this free facility! Park is large but does get filled up at certain times and certainly with full occupancy there would be a problem. Several car spaces occupied by a large skip and rental vehicles but we had no problems.
Hotel charges a fee for credit card accounts - we paid by debit card OK. This is unusual for hotels although some do for Amex and Diners for obvious reasons.
WiFi is available for £5 a day.
Staff are trying to do a good job and it is a place worth a look as some good rates are available.

Stayed for the Annual Reenactors Ball. Thought the room was rather nice, very comfortable minor blemishes. Breakfast good, plenty to chose from. Nice decor, apart from the bar which we did not use, it was very blame, though they has a lovely green library, near the stairs. Price and location very good. Will stay again.
