“Peaceful stay”
Reviewed 15 August 2014 via mobile

Late booking at woodlands, great site, excellent toilet and shower block, well done for the plugs for straightners that was worthwhile thought and I'm sure is appreciated. Lovely surroundings very helpful staff. The weather wasn't great so felt for those stopping in tents. Nice play area for the kids, washing up area and laundry room all well thought out. Thank you for a lovely peaceful stay with great facilities. Would highly recommend.

Stayed one night at Woodlands, Thursday 12th June 2014..Solo traveller camping off motorbike, Loads of room and a shower block better than most luxury sports and leisure clubs. Beautiful location, friendly staff in reception and just a short walk to The Hafod Arms for a beer and steak and chips .A little expensive at £11 for a one man tent and a bike but I'd camp there again.

Reviewed 26 May 2014

Looking through some of the reviews that we have read, some comments appear harsh, although others are 'right on the money'.
We have just returned from a long weekend camping at Woodlands.

It was the first camping experience for two of the party and from that perspective, the facilities were great as an introduction to camping.

Pro's:

Very clean
New shower/toilet block
Reception staff were friendly/helpful
stunning scenery
great location
Reasonable camping rates
water taps very accessible
Sheep, birds, rabbits, babbling brook

Cons:

Field for tents was very small which led to us being in very close proximity to other campers (one of whom plonked their huge tent in the spot where our car was parked whilst we had driven out to the beach - very annoying as we then had very loud neighbours in a much closer proximity than we would have liked) Had to move the car to quite an inconvenient spot...

10:30pm quiet request is not enforced and therefore not adhered to - very difficult to sleep.

Unfriendly shop staff: When we arrived, we had driven 3 hours to get to the camp site and were given a leaflet explaining that we could put in a telephone order to the teashop for our dinner which we could collect.
There was a clear time window for this and as we were well within it and were tired, we decided to take advantage of this option.
We called and asked if we could put in an order and were told 'that depends what you want and when' in quite an offhand manner. I could hear in the background a female voice complaining very loudly about fitting the orders in and 'what do they want' etc. which prompted me to ask if it was actually ok to put in an order at all?
Why offer a service and then be openly unhappy to provide said service? Odd.
When the food was collected it was overpriced for what it was - you would think that for the amount they were charging, (about £4.00 each for what appeared to be a small oven baked fish and a few chips) they would be a little bit happier...

Our second experience of the shop was when, after a terrible night's sleep due to said neighbours, we decided to walk down to the shop to buy a packet of bacon. We walked down and were told by the shopkeeper who was sweeping outside that the shop wasn't open yet as we were half an hour early. We decided to do a lap around the caravan park to kill time and by the time we returned there were 15 minutes left before the shop opening time. We therefore sat outside on the picnic benches in the rain for 15 minutes until the shopkeeper removed the chain from the front of the shop. We were the only people waiting to be served.

Whilst we know that we were there early and were by no means expecting a celebrity style private shopping experience out of hours, it would have been nice of the shopkeeper to ask if we wanted much and if not to just take the £2.00 off us for bacon so that we could go back up the hill to the camp site. Not really doing their utmost to ensure that their customers feel valued and want to return. I would understand if we were doing a huge shop but just an item.....?

Unfortunate really as they have the monopoly on shops in the vicinity but didn't give the best customer service. In hind sight if we had known that we would have had to wait so long, we would have driven to the garage 3 miles away instead, who on both occasions that we went there were friendly and happy to receive our custom.

Apart from the Devils Bridge walk which was excellent (and owned by the same people who own the campsite incidentally), there is little to do within walking distance.

We took some leaflets from reception in order to do some kayaking. The leaflet was out of date and when we called, the kayaking was no longer run and the next closest place was 40 minutes drive away. Wish the leaflets had been up to date.
In retrospect, we would perhaps have chosen a site much closer to the attractions/activities available.

We have to give 3/5 as the facilities were excellent but would we bother traveling the 3 hours or recommend to friends? Probably not for the service we received at the end of our long journey.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Feedback is very is very important to us. In response to your comments we have:

* Removed the kayaking leaflets from the reception, we had no idea that they had stopped running.
* Had a discussion with the site wardens who check the noise levels after 10pm in the camping field. It was reported back that a family was told to keep the noise levels down and that the second night over the BH weekend was peaceful and quiet.
* Discussed the fact that tents should be told to leave ample space between each other. However on bank holidays this can be problematic as we do allow cars to park by their tents unlike some camp site.

I am sorry that you were disappointed by the service of the tearooms. We do not manage this establishment. I am sorry that it has reflected badly on our review.

One of the best campsites we have ever stayed on.Toilet block was only opened last weekend - a fantastic new block, immaculate, spacious and big. Several times when we went to the toilet block staff were checking them and were always very friendly. Site was beautiful with lovely views. Everyone we encountered from booking over the phone, checking in and around the site were very helpful, friendly and pleasant. Definitely will be returning in the future and would recommend.

Arrived after a long journey expecting a welcome, and all I got was short shrift and made to feel very unwelcome by some long term residents. Basically they seem set up for long stay static types who want a home in the country, not campers out to enjoy the outdoors so we were made to feel very much like outsiders. A shame as it's in a great spot.

I am sorry but this review does not make sense to me. The static holiday home owners do not book the camping customers in! I am not sure that the reviewers in question would have met the owners and they certainly do not go around being rude to customers. Perhaps this is the couple who both got caught in the ladies showers together and the young man was asked to leave the ladies facilities by a member of staff. When any of our staff book in we make a point of being friendly. We understand that many people travel a long way to get here and we try our best to make them feel welcome.

we stayed in the secluded little bungalow (Broncoedwig) which was really lovely...a tad 'old fashioned' but I think that just added character to this lovely little bungalow. It was fully equipped with fully functioning kitchen (including dishwasher and washing machine!) it was just perfect for our family (2 adults, 2 children & baby). It was also lovely to wake up im the morning and see little rabbits hopping about among the grounds!. we didnt get to use or see much of the actual site as the weather was terrible the weekend we stayed althought the little swing set looked great!. lovely little tea room/gift shop with reasonable prices and the cakes were beautiful :) all staff were really friendly and helpful....only negative point is that check-in isnt until 3pm and the shop on site shuts at 4pm...we arrived at 4.15pm and shop was closed...and next nearest shop is a petrol station approx 2-3 miles away (which being a petrol station is naturally expensive!) other than that its 12 miles into aberystwyth town which has a huge morrisons so I would recommend either arriving before 4pm or take some 'supplies' with you. Overall though a very enjoyable weekend and we plan to return in the summer for a longer stay. Devil's bridge is highly recommended and the waterfall were beautiful :) Thanks!
