“Beautiful”
Reviewed 13 August 2014

Absolutely fantastic. Beautiful setting with a lovely lake. The walk around the lake is quite short but there are other walks that we didn't do. make sure you are there for feeding time (3pm in summer). To see that number of red kites at once truly was breathtaking. And it's free (except for car park which is £1.50 up to 2 hours and £3 for all day).
We ate in the cafe twice for lunch, very nice food and such beautiful views from the terrace while you eat. we can recommend the 'special' hot chocolate!
Nice play park for the children and nice gift shop.

“Watch the Birdie!”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

Having been to the Gigrin Farm feeding centre near Rhayader we were interested to find out about this one. Primarily a country park - £3 parking - for walking, mountain biking etc there are play areas for children, a shop, with food and drinks available in the large cafe (why do these places insist on having tasteless Fair Trade tea? - the all day breakfast was OK tho' ) There are a choice of walks with a comfortable half-hour one around the lake where, at 3pm (2pm in Winter as Kites don't do clock changes) the Kites are fed. Hundreds swoop down over the surrounding hills, lake and the many spectators, the interesting thing being that these seem predominantly to be wild Kites, at Gigrin they are tagged. They don't hang around as long as at Gigrin though, within half an hour of feeding 95% are gone. For other twitchers there is a feeding station near the balcony of the cafe, when we were there it was full of Siskins, Greenfich, Twite and lots of Chaffinches. I would visit again if passing, in comparison Gigrin has less facilities it is also less 'touristy' which suits me better but this one is more suitable for children but if it gets them interested in Wildlife and Nature in general it can't be a bad thing.

“Red Kites galore”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Feeding time in 3pm BST and 2pm GMT, definitely make sure you time your visit to coincide with the feeding. Red Kites and Buzzards joined in the frenzy when we were there, and it was an amazing spectacle, especially as the birds started to mass in the skies, prior to feeding time. We also had a nice chat to the guy who actually fed the birds. We went specifically to see the kites, and had a brilliant time.

Dogs are welcome on the site (to be kept on leads at feeding time, for obvious reasons) and also on the large outdoor seating/viewing platform where you can sit and enjoy lunch and other refreshments from the well-provisioned cafe. There are nice walks around the lake and sign boards with information about the kites. Great also to learn (in the loos) about the green roof, and water & watse recycling etc.

No entry fee, instead a paid-for car park, reasonably priced.

“Superb afternoon”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

Bwlch Nant y Arian is a wonderful place, just off the main road but in a very picturesque setting. There are two adventure playgrounds to keep the children entertained, an easy half-hour walk around the lake and a well-stocked cafe. The main draw is the red kite feeding at 3pm (2pm in the winter months). Just beforehand, the skies resemble a Heathrow holding pattern as 150 birds of prey circle and jostle for the best position. It's pretty spectacular, even from the cafe's outdoors seating area. Parking is free with a Forestry Commission Discovery Pasd.

“Exciting Day”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

What a great day we had. Its free to get in to see the kites and walk around the site, you just pay £3 for parking. There is a lovely cafe and shop selling Kite paraphernalia. At 3pm the guy wheeled the barrow out with all the meat in and by this time the Kites had been gathering, circling, calling and sitting in nearby trees. They knew what the time was! There was a feeding frenzy which went on for about 15 minutes, plenty of time to take lots of photos. The lake had other birds such as Tufted Duck and chicks, Little Grebes and chicks, Coot, Great Crested Grebe, Mallard and a massive feeding station just outside the cafe with lots of Siskin, Greenfinch and Chaffinch all jockying for position. A totally enjoyable and relaxing afternoon.
