“Typical sea side hotel”
Reviewed 1 August 2012

Very typical of a British sea front hotel. No onsite parking but was plenty available on street. Reception was ok, nothing modern with handwritten forms. Does the job though! As usual with these hotels theres no key cards and its a good old fashioned door key and fob. Room was a bit on the small side, and very pink! Bathroom was small as well with most of it taken by a whirlpool bath. Didnt try this so cant comment but seems a bit over the top when they could have fitted in a very good bath and left more space for the toilet etc. Another typical aspect of these old hotels are creaky floorboards, passageway mazes and steps in the middle of corridors! If you like modern then this isnt the place for you. They do have free wifi so that is a bonus. Didnt eat in the hotel at night so can only comment on breakfast which was average. I wasnt 100% after a bit of a late night but the selection was ok without being extended. Would I stay here again? Nothing really put me off so the answer would be yes but I would probably look to see if theres something bit better. Not sure if that hotel exists in Aberystwyth though!

The Marine Hotel has everything--except a welcoming attitude toward their guests. The employees at the front desk are businesslike, and curt--bordering on dismissive. Their buffet breakfast was crowded, and the waiter tried to convince a young couple nearby to visit the buffet 20 minutes before breakfast was over so he could shut it down early. I gave up on getting a second cup of coffee, the only thing not at the buffet and requiring the waiter's service. The room and the common spaces were lovely, but all of the interactions I witnessed as a solo traveler were devoid of warmth. Just a little hospitality would go a long way in earning this hotel five stars!

I have stayed in the marine on and off over the past 12 months for business purposes and I have had an excellent stay every time!!!

At one point I was there for 3 months, 3 nights a weeks so can say my feedback is very believable!

The service at reception and from management has always been of a high standard, always friendly and willing to help.

Although some rooms may be small, I found them cosy and homely. Fresh towels and rooms cleaned daily, tea and coffee always replenished.

Breakfast was always of a high standard. Plenty of choice and food always freshly cooked. Waiting on staff some of the most polite and helpful ive ever found in a family run hotel.

I ate in the restaurant in the evenings sometimes and always found the food enjoyable. I've never experienced a bad meal here (their omelettes were my favourite)

If I ever have to visit Aberystwyth again, I would most definitely stay here and have recommends this hotel to other colleagues working in the area. A hotel where the management should be extremely proud of their staff!!!

Parking in the car park we found the space was very cramped and a little bit of litter picking up would not of gone amiss, if anyone has lost a pair of boxer shorts, they are in the car park !, The receptionist was ok but a few more smilies would help, she doesn't come across as if she enjoys her job and the way that she asked for payment upfront was brusque. We stayed in room 221 Deluxe which has an excellent sea view from the bay window. We really did not think that it justified the £130 price tag. The shower had very little pressure so drizzled out, there was a clump of hair in the bath plug hole and the double taps where very loose. The whole room felt like it needed a good spring clean, dust around the bed feet and looked like the only areas that had been cleaned was the bits that where easy to get too. We only stayed one night and would definately have complained if we had stayed longer, We had slept in the bed and pulled back the heavy bedspread and it was only the next morning that we saw just how dirty the bed spread was, as far as too say that here was effidence of previous occupants !! UCK. Its the little things that the hotel need to address, when selling a delux room, mould around the bath, sealant around the bath very poorly done, ill fitting bathroom fittings and flooring, lack of shelve space in the bathroom, the list could go on. The owners of this hotel need to spend time and look at their rooms as if they were the paying guest. On the plus side the breakfast was excellent as were the waiting staff.

My daughter was graduating from Aber Uni and had booked myself (mum) and her teenage sister into the Marine Hotel in a 'twin' room at a cost of £75 per night B & B. The 'room' turned out to be a tiny narrow space under the eaves which just fitted a single bed one end and another single at the other. Due to a thick wooden beam inches above the second bed, it could only be accessed by lying down and sliding sideways onto the bed. It was filthy - brown stains on the carpet - peeling old yellowing wallpaper and bedding that I would have put on the tip. I was horrified. The shared bathroom had shower gel but no shower, missing tiles and holes in the wall. There couldn't have been more of a contrast with the chandeliers in the hotel entrance. I said the room was appalling and gave them the opportunity to change but they said they were full and when asked if they could help us to find alternative accommodation, they did not care and were totally unhelpful just saying everywhere would be full. We trawled the seafront and were very lucky to find a beautiful seafront B & B - huge room - bay window with sea view - chairs - television - fantastic breakfast (and a saving of £50 on the Marine Hotel). This hotel should be boycotted unitil it cleans up its act and stops fleecing the parents of Aber students by offering such diabolical accommodation and service. Beautiful Aberystwyth deserves better than this!

I came here to stay when I came for the university open day. A lovely hotel, decent rooms which were clean and a nice cooked buffet breakfast in the morning. There are facilities such as a spa and (I think) pool but I dont know what they are like. I would recommend it, despite the price.

Stayed in this hotel for business for one night. Pros: Amazing views, some really nice staff, good breakfast, free wifi. Cons: almost everything else.

Room, though big wasn't especially clean and had the most eccentric decor and range of furniture I've seen in a while. The bed was meant to be a double but was two large single beds inexpertly joined together and was pretty uncomfortable as a result. The beautiful view of the sea and the bay was available through a draughty bay window into which had been squeezed two leather armchairs and a tatty old table. The view was rather spoiled by the dirty windows and the cobwebs. Bathroom was a bizarre arrangement behind a 1960s style partitioned off section of the room. It had been cleaned but the grouting on the shower was really dirty. Ick.
My booking included dinner, which was mostly inedible, although the waitress was really lovely. I had all her full attention, mind you, as I was the only person in the large restaurant. Breakfast the next morning was much better and the lovely Phillipino waiter was a delight. The reception staff could do with a week at charm school, though.

I really wouldn't stay here again, which is a shame because quirky, independent hotels are a dying breed and with a bit of work and elbow grease this hotel would be vastly improved.
