Gwesty'r Marine Hotel
Ranked #10 of 13 Hotels in Aberystwyth
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

I stayed in the annexe of The Marine for my hen weekend.

The rooms were fantastic, clean, comfortable, big, and looked out on to the sea front.

The breakfast was brilliant, continental and full English available (buffet style).

Highly recommended.

This hotel was very disappointing even though it was on the sea front with a sea view. The staff were very nice and helpful, the food was ok so no problems there but we expected parking and there were only a few spaces and they were all taken. We were lucky to find a space down the road. The bed was very uncomfortable as the springs were wobbly and I had a poor night's sleep. The room was in the attic with a tiny window and was cramped as it was full of furniture including bunk beds and a single as well as a double bed, when we had only booked a standard double. It was August and they were fully booked but we wish we had gone elsewhere. The furnishings were very tired and for £95 b&b we felt it was overpriced.

Room Tip: Don't book a room near the lift as it can be noisy after midnight.

We paid £125 for one night in August for a Deluxe Double Room - website said could have sea views, 4 poster or jacuzzi bath. On arrival at check in time the receptionist was rushed off her feet and was extremely rude when there appeared to be a problem with our booking. We were told to sit down and wait until she had time to look online for the problem - not really the best start. Once we got into the room, first impressions were great, had the 4 poster with the sea views along with the jacuzzi bath...couldn't have wished for anything better, or could we! The grouting around the bath was mouldy, the bath was half inch away from the wall, a quick repair had been made on the jacuzzi bath sticking a piece of plastic so it over hung - causing a rather uncomfortable ledge in your back as you tried to relax. The bath was dirty with limescale and clearly hadn't been cleaned properly. The 4 poster was rickety and even lying a jumper over the bottom rail made it wobble! Simple things such as a lick of paint around the windows where the old paint was flaking off and cleaning the old curtain rail that was still up on the wall would have made the sea view a little more pleasant.
Due to the weather we decided to dine in the hotel that evening, when asking for a menu we got the response 'presumably for the bar menu'. Considering the same receptionist had just checked us into a deluxe room this came across quite rude. Booking a table for an a la carte dinner when arriving at the restaurant we were told to go to the ballroom where dinner would be served. There was no waiter/waitress around and the ballroom was empty. After 10 mins we were told to choose a table, all of which were already set up for breakfast with the cereals out on full display. The waiter/barman/bloke that seemed to be running everything was extremely charming however, is a shame that we couldn't say the same about the food. The starter was clearly out of a pre-made bag and the lettuce was brown and withered. Main course, one meal was steak which was pretty much inedible, my partner had duck with orange which was dry and stringy too. The best part of the meal was the bottle of champers! Breakfast was vile.

If we would have been paying £40 a night these little things that were wrong with the room would have been acceptable but when paying for a high end room at £125 I don't expect to be looked down upon by staff and in my eyes, all finishing touches should be perfect. As for eating....GO OUT! Do not stay in the hotel for food, it was a complete waste of time and money!

Room Tip: I wouldn't like to see any of the rooms at a lower cost than the £125 we paid. Finishing touches...

First, we would have liked to rate this "Good" as it falls between 'Very Good' and 'Average' which are the only Trip Advisor choice buttons. We were an early evening walk in and were offered a seafront room for £80 by a welcoming receptionist - excellent value for the view and the wide choice at breakfast. The room was OK in terms of size, spotlessly clean, and although the décor was straight out of the 1970s, it was thoughtfully done, with two comfy chairs in the bay window. Our only slight quibble was the curtains were not blackout and the all-night glow from the streetlight right outside was somewhat intrusive.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room - the sunsets are amazing.

We booked a lodge for one night for 6 of us that cost £150. When we got there the place hadnt been cleaned at all. The bins were overflowing with rubbish. Loads of old beer cans outside. The sink was blocked with food and the worktops were a state. None of the bed sheets had been changed from the previous people that stayed there. There were still dirty towels on the floor. There was no hot water or central heating either. Also one of the single beds were broken. If your thinking about booking here then dont.

I went to stay at the marine hotel as it was a colleagues wedding in a nearby hotel it was a lovely hotel right on the sea front nice facilities fantastic buffet breakfast would recommend it to anyone thinking of staying there. One thing to be careful though do not pay for a sea view until you see the room as we asked for one and they gave us a room without one but our room was great anyway.

I've paid £125 per one night towards the end of July which seemed a bit too expensive.

The bed was spacious and comfortable. Also, we had a view towards the sea which was nice but I found the window to be so tiny that it made the view seem somehow less impressive. The room was rather on the small side as well which made the £125 spent not very worthy.

However, overall the stay was pleasant. There was a very nice blonde girl, from Slovakia, who was a member of the staff and she was very friendly and welcoming.

I've also ordered a Sea bass priced around £15 but it was actually very good value for money; it came with three types of potatoes (I don't really know why, but they brought wedges, boiled potatoes and roasted potatoes with it) along with a lot of vegetables and a salad.

I would recommend this hotel compared to others in town due to its location and good food but you won't be that impressed if you are used to travelling and have a lot of other hotels to compare to.

Room Tip: Obviously, try to get a room with sea view.
