“Very nice hosts, a clean room and a good breakfast”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

We liked the accomodation of Les and Rita very much, because we had a bright and clean room with a good bathroom. The breakfast was very good and the hosts were very friendly. The accomodation is not far away from the Bangor Pier and from the city of bangor. The price for the B&B was not too expensive. I would recommend this B&B for all tourists.

We stayed at the Garth Guest House for about a week in late August. It had been almost five years since I had last been to the lovely town where I had spent one semester as an Erasmus student, and I wanted to show my girlfriend both Bangor and beautiful Wales in general.
We had booked an en suite double room and were given the room in the attic, which was spotlessly tidy and quiet; we never even heard as much as a creaking door. (Les actually suggested it to us, and if it hadn't been to our liking we could have had another room as well.) Not only was it cleaned every day, but we also had fresh towels whenever we returned from one of our trips. Speaking of which, Les is always up for a chat and had very nice journeys and spots to suggest, some of which I hadn't even heard of during all those months I had spent in Bangor. He even offered us a lift to the train station, although he was still recovering from a leg injury (Get well soon!). Rita would provide us with one of the best and most filling vegetarian breakfasts I've ever had every morning, often giving us something to take away. We enjoyed our stay very, very much. The Garth Guest House was by far the cleanest, nicest and most amiable accommodation we've had the pleasure to enjoy so far.

PS: I have absolutely no idea how anyone in their right mind can come to the conclusion that the Garth Guest House is a bad place to spend your holidays at, let alone think that Les and Rita are bad hosts. Please don't listen to the reviews of people who are unable to take the most inoffensive of jokes (thank you, by the way, for making Germany appear as the most humourless and uptight nation in the world once again, macrule) or wouldn't know cultural awareness even if it hit them in the face (if you'd spoken to more than one original Welshman, babel44, you would have noticed that many of them will tell you to "listen" and that it's not a rude thing to say, provided you understand what it means).

Room Tip: The room in the attic is really nice, quiet and cosy. It might not have a great view, but you're...

I'm surprised how many people are fans of "Les and Rita" (I suspect there are lots of fake reviews on here, especially those who never reviewed anything but this B&B). No idea who Rita is, but Les is a person you don't want to be around longer than necessary. When we arrived we weren't welcomed in exactly, instead it felt like we were intruding or trying to beg or steal something from him. After we were shown the room, we were explicitly demonstrated that the key in fact does open the lock, with the quite forward suggestion, that if it does not it would have to be because we were drunk. This was the first time we explained we do not drink.

After we had supper and came back in, we were as part of a conversation again asked if we headed out later for a drink. Again we explained we do not drink. This must be such a baffling idea to the owner, because it took him a while to come up with an apologetic comment about his dad also not drinking yet being merry.

Les has a tiny "office" right next to the stairs in which he seems to duck and take cover whenever someone is approaching. You can still talk to him, but he retreats into that shell and sits down, and behaves like a janitor who is forced to deal with people - something he never considered part of his work.

The room we were in was next to a shared bathroom. In fact it must have been shared between an army of people, because the noise of people coming and going (clearly audible through the wall) went on all evening, night, and morning. I suspect the advertised "en-suites" are extremely rare in that house.

The final disappointment was breakfast. Stupidly Les bragged the night before that it was the best in Bangor - "understatement and overdelivery" is not one of his talents. The sausages were inedible even when drowned in ketchup. The bacon was pointless. Tea arrived in a mug that was rather on the small side, and its content tasted of ... nothing. Tea this was not. Also the butter was margarine, an absolute no go.

You should also be prepared that TV news is forced down your throat as a side dish. Wonderfully enhanced by the owner's comments about the news items, including friendly hinting at the "interesting" items, during which the room politely goes silent - after all the owner wants to listen to it.

I have stayed in B&Bs that were even less comfortable and cheaper - and still I felt better there than in Y Garth.

But maybe that's part of the surrealistic experience that Bangor is...

I would be rating this up one notch except for the filth on the shared bathroom extractor fan. This has not been cleaned for ages. Otherwise it is what I would expect for a a tradesman's hotel but not from a hotel with regular tourists as guests. Our welcome was quite a strong stare of potential disapproval. Yes, after that Les is welcoming, but the first impression was that he was suspicious.

Night time was noisy as can be with an endless tramp of those needing a pee to the shared bathroom. How many rooms have the en suite facilities advertised on the sign outside?

Breakfast was well cooked. The bacon was generous, but flavourless, and the catering sausages, while served as a pair, something that makes a pleasant change, were catering sausages. I'd prefer one good one to two poor ones any day. Butter please, not Flora, and tea in a pot, not a mug of liquid served with no offer of a refill

It needs to aim clearly for a market and cater for it well. At present I'm not sure it knows what type of a guest house it is. It's budget priced, certainly.

Room Tip: Ask for ensuite facilities!

This was a first visit to Wales (and to Bangor) for my wife and I, travelling to visit some of my family roots. Wanting to be right in town, I chose Y Garth. Indeed, the location is great- just a short walk from everything, including the beautiful Bangor Pier. But more that the great location, the room was spotlessly clean and bright, with a lovely view of the park on the Garth Road- and most of all, our hosts Les and Rita and perfectly wonderful. Lots of enjoyable conversation made the environment familial and jovial. The breakfasts are great and thoughtfully made. We loved every part of our week in Bangor.
As I said to Les, this is THE place to stay in Bangor!

Room Tip: Y Garth is approximately a leisurely 15 minute walk from the Bangor train station.
