“Lovely Little Restaurant”
Reviewed 18 September 2010

great little place, good food, very friendly and informal atmosphere - All we wanted for an evening out. Prices are well below what we saw on offer when walking through the town during the day - There were 4 eateries to choose from in this tiny street and we are glad we opted for this place - Its lovely! I recommend it if you love food and want a relaxed place to spend the evening. Shame we live so far away from a gem like this.

“DELIGHTFUL HOSTESS AND SUPERB FOOD”
Reviewed 10 August 2010

Having read the two previous reviews, I arrived in 'Le bistro' last night and was greeted by a charming hostess with a very busy restaurant.! The food was typically French and we asked several questions regarding ingeridents etc, and found the hostess very helpful, especially as my daughter does not eat cream yet wanted the mullet ( which, incidentally, was delicious) The atmosphere is welcoming, warm and very french in a stylish but relaxed way. I highly recommend this little bistro and can only presume that the two previous reviewers were having a bad day personally! The atmosphere was busy but friendly and unpretentious and the food is simply delicious.

“Good food + Good price, but not quite a good time”
Reviewed 9 August 2010

The food here was tasty, local, well cooked and well presented. Portions were generous too - fresh warm bread with the starters, and a decent bowl of veg to accompany the main, as well as more than reasonable portions of meat + fish. Starters - the scallops and the terrine - were good. For mains, my dining companion had the beef - a large chunk of local beef, cooked rare, just as requested, in a great sauce. I had the local mullet in a pernod and cream sauce - again, a very generous helping of fish with a nicely flavoured sauce, not too overwhelmed with pernod. I absolutely loved my summer pudding with a berry and Welsh vodka coulis. My companion enjoyed the chocolate pot, although I thought it could have been a little more chocolately.

So good food, verging on the extremely good, and very reasonable prices, so why doesn't the place rate higher? The service was brusque to the point of being almost rude. Shortly after we arrived, the hostess did accept a party of 17, which did place some pressure on her so it may be that at a quieter time, the service might improve. But even before the large party arrived, there was little attempt to tell us more about the menu or the specials. When our plates were cleared after each course, no-one asked if the food was OK. People kept coming in to enquire about tables, and leaving the door open so that we all got quite cold - neither of the waiters closed it. The wine was plonked unceremoniously on our table - no check that it was the right one, or OK, or offer to pour it. Too little milk to whiten one coffee, let alone two. Whilst a party of 17 is a challenge, and I understand the hostess telling us in case it caused delays for our food - it didn't - she repeatedly came to all the tables in our area, saying 'I've got a party of 17 - it's mad up there', 'I've just sent the waitress home and now I've got 17', 'They're a lovely table, they're even laying their own place settings, but there's 17 of them', 'I've got a party of 17 - I'm just running up and down those stairs'. I go out to dinner to relax, not to hear how stressful the restaurant staff's day is turning out to be. On the plus side, the hostess was very welcoming to the family with two young children on the table near us - unusual in a restaurant with this type of environment / food.

“Great food, an awful host!”
Reviewed 20 June 2010

For a celebratory meal, we were in search for a pleasant restaurant in a lovely location and good food and this was one that was recommended by the fabulous B&B we stayed in. When we arrived we were "greeted", more like stared at with no simple "hello" or "welcome" from who appeared to be the lady of the restaurant. She sat us down without a smile and our whole evening was interfered by her pottering about at the bar and cluttering glasses. The rest of the staff made no real effort and simply took orders and brought drinks and food but made no eye contact or spoke in a welcoming manner.

Our meal was then interfered by the hostess speaking to a customer who had come to the bar to tell her that he was not paying for a warm beer she had given him, but instead of politely dealing with the situation the moody madame began shouting at him and telling him to never come back to her restaurant before retiring to her bar, pouring herself a drink and muttered "b*stard" - but not so quietly so that every table in the room could not hear. If we wanted entertainment, EastEnders would have been more appropriate!
She was absolutely appalling and also gave us a mouthful when we told her she had ruined our meal and should have dealt with her customers in a more discreet manner.

It was a real shame as the food was delicious and if the manageress were to see herself off the premises, along with a few of the moody staff, it would be a delightful restaurant with wonderful French ambience!
