My family and I have just returned from a Christmas Break at this hotel and it was SUPERB!
My husband, son and I had a family room (no 303) and my parents were across the corridor in room no 304. Our room was very large, spotlessly clean and very warm - perhaps just a little too warm but that was soon resolved by opening the windows for a short while.
The previous reviewer mentioned that their room was shabby and I suspect that some of the rooms have been refurbished fairly recently. Our room was painted bright yellow and had matching bed linen and curtains with an orange carpet. I am very, very fussy about cleanliness but the room really was perfect - apart from the noise from our neighbours! I think that this was because they were an elderly couple who had the television on very, very loud and there was an interconnecting door between our room and theirs and the sound was able to come through the gap under the bottom of the door. It wasn't really a problem though as we didn't spend much time in the room. The room also had a flat screen television on the wall so it really does seem like room updates are a work in progress.
Our bathroom was large and clean with a powerful over the bath shower. The water pressure was high and the bathroom floor did end up like a swimming pool on more than one occasion!! The room we were in is used for disabled guests as the bathroom had various grips and handrails. Again, the bathroom was clean with fresh fluffy towels warming on the towel rail.
Upon entering the hotel, there is a charming reception area with a beautiful wooden staircase, which has galleried landings. The main restaurant and bar are off of the reception area, as is the entrance to the spa. There are some seating areas with settees, which are perfect for some relaxation with a book or after dinner drinks, plus there is a library and a television room. All are very clean and nicely decorated.
The spa was super with a lovely swimming pool, sauna, steam room, sun shower and gym. Towels are provided at the swimming pool and the changing rooms and showers within the spa are clean and tidy. Children can only use the swimming pool at certain times.
We were on a "Christmas Break" package which included breakfast and dinner and a gala buffet on Christmas day. The food was absolutely delicious - no complaints at all about that and all the evening meals were beautifully presented on piping hot plates! I realise food is obviously a personal choice, and I'm very fussy, but every meal was delicious and I don't think they could be considered to be bland.
Breakfast was buffet style including fruit juices, cereals, toast and a fantastic hot selection of fried eggs, grilled tomatoes, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, beans and scrambled egg.
For the evening meal, there is an allowance of £16.95 per person and for that, you get a choice of 4 starters, 5 mains, 4 desserts and tea and coffee. We had fillet steak for one of our evening meals (which was DELICIOUS and cooked to perfection!) and for this there was a £6.50 supplement per person and it was worth every penny! We also had sirloin steak at one meal and that carried a surcharge of £3.00 per person. All the other food was included in the allowance and examples of the types of main meal are honey glazed gammon with parsley sauce, wild mushroom and vegetable penne pasta, fillet of plaice with white wine and shrimps, cold topside of beef salad, fillet steak with mushroom sauce served on a potato rosti. All the meals came with separate dishes of potatoes and vegetables. Like I mentioned, I'm very fussy but I thoroughly enjoyed very meal - in fact, I actually looked forward to the evening dinner, which is rare for me in a hotel! I feel that the menu caters for most tastes and I cannot see that the food would cause disappointment as it was fantastic.
According to the information on Trip Advisor, the hotel is a 2* but on the board outside, it shows as an AA 3* property. I would actually say this is a 4* property as it really was a super place to stay in a lovely location, just 5 minutes walk from Caernarfon Castle.
To summarise, I would recommend this hotel as a fabulous place to stay all year round. We had a brilliant time and the staff make you feel very welcome and will do all they can to ensure that you have a good time. The service in the dining room was good - perhaps a little slow on occasion but the hotel was full and it didn't bother us at all as all the meals were served very hot. Do not hesitate to book because it is wonderful and you will not be disappointed.
