“Top Welcome, Quaint Clean Room, Great food”
Reviewed 24 November 2013

The welcome in the Black Boy is A*. A well organized staff and a spotlessly clean room. It's an ancient inn, but very well maintained. The rooms have old oak furniture. The staff are very helpful and the place is a buzz of international visitors. It is just within the town walls and is a wonderful part of the history of Caernarfon. The castle is nearby as is the harbour and the wonderful Galeri Theatre and Arts Centre is a 200 metre walk away. The food attracts local families and the quality is good and the quantities are big. They serve locally caught fish and reared meat. In the middle of all the foreign languages, you can hear plenty of Welsh. The staff are almost all bi-lingual and use Welsh routinely as part of their work. The music sound-track in the background is a lovely mix of AOR Americana and Welsh music. Will definitely return. Truly wonderful place to visit. Parking available in the hotel car park and a public car park nearby.

I stay at the Black Boy quite often, as I have to visit north Wales for work and I tend to stay at this hotel most of the time, because it is charming, the staff are very pleasant and Caernarfon is a great little town. Downstairs the Black Boy is a characterful and busy pub with a lively restaurant, serving the most enormous portions. Upstairs is also characterful, with beams and interesting rooms tucked into this historic building, but all nicely furnished and with modern facilities. Out the back is Black Jacks, where you can have a suite with kitchenette for a very reasonable price. this is especially good if you fancy a takeaway or just don't want to eat restaurant style.
The hotel/pub is inside the historic walled town and just round the corner is one of the most gorgeous waterfronts in the UK.
The menu is sizeable and the quantities substantial. I especially like the full veggie breakfast.
The staff are lovely and lively and you will hear Welsh spoken here.
This is not a normal bland place to stay. In fact there is nothing bland about Caernarfon.

Room Tip: Black Jacks four poster suite is incredibly good value and so spacious.

Just back from a weekend break in Carnarfon, where we stayed at the Black Boy Inn. Well what a treat, right from the start. We were warmly greeted at reception by Andrea who then took us up to our room (15). Well appointed with olde worlde charm, huge and comfortable four poster bed and authentic furnishings. Bedding was sumptuous with lots of lovely feather pillows. En-suite matched the main room with deep bath, powerful shower, fluffy towels and lovely toiletries. We decided to eat in the dining room, which despite the notes of other travellers, we were seated immediately on both nights. The meals were excellent, arrived quickly, well cooked and huge portions, all served by Michelle and her team, who were informal, amusing and friendly,in fact made you feel as if you were a local popping in for your regular Saturday night meal out. Breakfast was equally as good as dinner, a myriad of choice with as much tea and coffee as you could drink (always a plus as I love my morning cuppa!!)

Well done to all the staff for their warmth and friendliness, so often attempted by many other hotels we have stayed in but never, in our experience achieved to this degree.

In summary ~ when can we come back?

how excellent the Black Boy is.......because when I want to return....it could be fully booked !!

Myself and my partner spend 3 wonderful days at the Black Boy. We arrived Tuesday pm...accompanied to our room, one of the Four Poster Bedrooms, which from the pictorials on the website exceeded our expectations.
We decided to eat at Black Boy that evening.....the food was superb....Chicken & Bacon in Avocado Sauce together with Sweet Potato Chips.......divine...... and more than value for money......to be honest, it was 2 portions per person. We were asked if we wanted dessert......I asked for "block & tackle & rope" as to sucumb to climbing the stairs would have been harder than being hoisted to our room !!!
Breakfast, the following morn was of the finest quality.......PROPER HP Sauce/Heinz Tomato Sauce, wonderful, locally baked granary & white bread, the finest quality fruit & yoghurt and the Welsh Breakfast was also of the highest, highest quality fayre.
The staff have been trained in the necessity that customer service is paramount.............they were so attentive, but not over-bearing.......the friendliness came through in abundance.
We had stopped off on our journey on the way to Black Boy and had a picnic lunch......there were some remnants, so we enquired if it would be possible to use the kitchen to both discard the remnants & wash the pots.......not an issue for the Kitchen staff , and we were staggered that they had been washed and even placed in our room when we returned from our sojurn.
The Black Boy has been restored to the highest quality, being cognisant of the historical relevance of the building.
Customer Service in the UK is sadly lacking................but not at this location. The management have instilled this into the staff, and it shines through. You are made to feel as you are in your home.....if there is an issue, it is resolved.....and promptly.
I have been fortunate to travel throughout the UK and in Northern Europe as part of my professional & personal life............the Black Boy is one of the best I have stayed in.......I would highly recommend it.......in a nutshell ?......"They got it right".......Thank you John & staff......you should be proud.............especially the loos.....what can I and K say.....apart from WOW !!!! Thank you and see you soon......we will definitely be back and we have recommended it to our friends

What can i say more , but just to thank you for this kind review . I am actually going to pick Loo of the year award for 2013 on the 6 th December .This has been achieved for a number of years at the Black Boy Inn. We try and maintain these standards throughout the Inn.Most of the staff are local and work very hard to make all customers comfortable.

Just returned from a two night stay and before we left we were checking with reception for another visit next year. Olde worlde charm with huge four poster bed, lovely room with authentic furniture, not so authentic huge t.v.in the morning to watch from your big comfy bed that had the most luxurious quilt, pillows and linen. The en-suite was immaculate with lovely fluffy towels, in fact, i spent ages trying to read labels to try and find the makers for a purchase for myself ( I should have just asked ! ) We had our first evening meal at the inn and decided we were not going anywhere else to eat, huge portions and delicious. Breakfast is delicious and plentiful too, all credit to the kitchen and dining staff. I take my hat off to the owner, his staff training on customer service is to behold. I have not stayed anywhere for such a long time where the staff are so friendly and over and above accommodating and nothing requested was any trouble. The public loos winning awards !!, lets not forget the cleaning staff that we rarely see after we have left our mess .I loved it, I would not hesitate to go back and recommend to my friends and family. (special thanks to Julie in the breakfast room, what a star) - 0H yes, so enamored I forgot to say it's a fairly good base for trips !

We stayed on a Saturday night in November 2013 and were delighted to discover the place inside the Old town walls. A super old fashioned building, but with great comforts, a warm welcome and very funny, human, informal staff. Just what we always dream of finding, but so rarely do. A very slight downer was disturbance and crowded corridors filled with drunken revellers spilling over from the bar. But Wales had just lost, so it was understandable and the mood was actually quite merry (I think!)
We would come back, no hesitation.

Room Tip: In view of its use as a local pub I would recommend staying during the week to avoid late night nois...

Spent several days on a trip in England and Wales and stayed here one night as part of a 2-night stay in Caernarfon. should have stayed here for the two nights as the room was lovely. Booked the slightly deerer Junior Suite with 4 poster bed and it was seriously comfy with a massive bed and huge tele for chilling after an afternoon of wandering around the town. Rooms decor is done very nicely and is huge, there is a big kitchen area to prep your some of your own food if you were staying a few days. These rooms are in a building to the rear of main building so no disturbance from pub at all. Ended up eating here both nights we stayed in Caernarfon as the second night we went to another restaurant we'd looked at online and found it to be closed as it was Sunday! So back down to the black boy we went as we knew from the night before the food was great. Big portions I personally have a good appetite and thought the large portions were great I've too often spent money on a meal only to still feel hungry but my other half was struggling shes not a big eater so she asked for small portion second night. Staff were very friendly and attentive also at all times evening breakfast. The decor in the Inn itself is cool very old style proper old style and the warm stoves are great make the place very cosy, with the good food and good choice of different ales to try for a few hours then back up to the queen size 4 poster bed,top marks all around!
