“A superb hotel and close to Snowdonia - no wonder the pub itself is a top-10 pub of Wales”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

I was away on business and stayed in room number 15. The room cost was £67 and I wasn't expecting much, however, friends from the area highly recommended the Black Boy. Room 15 is discovered within a labyrinth and being shown to my room really helped. It is important to note that the staff are incredibly friendly and the room tour was/is a nice touch and one that is done in only the very best of hotels.
Within the room it was all there. A extremely comfortable four poster bed (!), a good sized TV, free wifi and a powerful shower. The shower is curtained and I prefer screens, but that's a minor detail. On the detail front, the attention to this subject is evident - from the room key scan entry to the luxury quilted loo roll.
I ate in the restaurant and the food is tremendous and it doesn't break the bank. £8.95 (as I recall) for liver and onions of the highest quality. The dinning room was busy with not just guests, but locals as well. Breakfast too was very good.
I didn't have time to drink in the bar - it looked great and I'm told that it is a top-notch establishment with local real ales.
I highly recommend this hotel.

Just had a weekend away with friends at the Black Boy. The hotel is an easy stroll from the centre of Caernarfon. The hotel's facilities, staff and rooms are all excellent and cannot be faulted (especially for the cost of the stay). There is secure parking, the rooms are very comfortable - the fixtures & fittings are of a high standard (linens very good quality). The restaurant was busy on both nights of our stay but the staff ensured we were found a table although you can eat quite comfortably in the bar. The food is the same price as any other pub grub but is of a very high standard and you do get lots! The bars (2 small ones) are lively (in a good way). Breakfast again excellent quality & plentiful. Would highly recommend.

Thank you for this kind review , i am really glad you enjoyed your time at the Inn.As you state we are
real Welsh Inn , with quality. We do not try and sell ourselves as a quiet hotel in rural surroundings. The Black Boy is situated in the centre of this welsh speaking royal town of Caernarfon . Therefore it does get very busy at certain times of the year , and we also the place for locals . Surely no better advert than follow the locals.

When we arrived at the Black Boy inn, we had the most wonderful welcome at reception, we were a little early but that wasn't a problem, they looked after our luggage while we had lunch in the very old worldly bar, lunch was excellent, staff and customers very friendly, room very nice, will be visiting again....

Room Tip: Try not to have one at the very top, if you have a problem with stairs..

We were excited to stay here because of the history and the positive reviews. Unfortunately, the hotel was disappointing. We had a room at the very end of a maze narrow hallways and doorways. It had twin beds, but because of the small size of the room it should have only had one bed. There was no room for luggage and we bumped into each other a lot. The bathroom had been redone and was nice, but the condition of the furniture and the carpeting kind of gave me the creeps. We were also blessed to have the kitchen help taking their cigarette breaks under our window and talking while we were trying to sleep. I would recommend staying elsewhere, but coming to the Black Boy for dinner (which was excellent).

We take note of your comments and we make the following comments.
The maze of corridors and doors is part of the Age and character of the Inn.
The fact the room was a twin would have been a choice made on booking. We could have changed this if required. The whole Inn has been refurbished as you state over last few years.
The furniture is genuine oak furniture which is of a dark colour by design and the carpets are a red again by design.
We do make note and apologize as regards staff smoking at this point , this will be rectified.
I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay , if you did feel you would like to try us again try one of the other room types in Black Jacks . These are lighter rooms and larger.

Well where do I start... This is possibly the best hotel I stay in, this is my 6th time this year and there will be 6 more visits per year from now on. This hotel is fantastic, the staff are so extremely helpful in every way possible. The restaurant is Michelin star in my opinion. I'm a lady on my own each visit and I am made to feel so welcome and secure and to me this is so very important as I stay away a lot with business. I've stayed in 6 different rooms and everyone of them is so perfectly decorated and like new. Nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff and John and Michelle's customer service is second to none. Some of the rooms even have a kitchen/diner with a dishwasher, hob, microwave, fridge and all utensils you could ever need. I cannot praise this hotel enough please give it a try and you will be another extremely satisfied customer.
Can't wait for my next visit in January thanks John x

Room Tip: For a special occasion stay in room 51 four poster bed is fantastic x

The welcome in the Black Boy is A*. A well organized staff and a spotlessly clean room. It's an ancient inn, but very well maintained. The rooms have old oak furniture. The staff are very helpful and the place is a buzz of international visitors. It is just within the town walls and is a wonderful part of the history of Caernarfon. The castle is nearby as is the harbour and the wonderful Galeri Theatre and Arts Centre is a 200 metre walk away. The food attracts local families and the quality is good and the quantities are big. They serve locally caught fish and reared meat. In the middle of all the foreign languages, you can hear plenty of Welsh. The staff are almost all bi-lingual and use Welsh routinely as part of their work. The music sound-track in the background is a lovely mix of AOR Americana and Welsh music. Will definitely return. Truly wonderful place to visit. Parking available in the hotel car park and a public car park nearby.
