“Disappointed - Great location/Rooms/Staff - average food !”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We booked after reading all the positive reviews so our expectations were high. The location was perfect right in the heart of town, near to the castle. It was easy to find and had a benefit of a free car park. Check in was easy and very friendly. The room itself was very nice - clean with little extra touches. All going well we thought. When it came to dinner we ordered 2 mains from the menu with a plan for wine and deserts. We both ordered a fish dish. Fish was great but one of the dishes was served with frozen green beans and ready made mash potato (the sort you buy in a supermarket in a block) The white sauce was far too salty. The salad was plain and just not nice.
At the third attempt the wine(after opening two prior bottles with corkage problems) eventually
arrived after i'd finished my meal. Needless to say we didn't have the wine or stop for dessert. It's a real shame when an establishment has lots of other things going for it but then is let down by an inconsistent kitchen that lacks culinary creativity. My advice is stay here but dine elsewhere.

Room Tip: Double room good value - big beds

I appreciate your feedback and i have to apologize that your experience in dining room was not up t o your expectations . I can promise though that the mash is definiatly made on premises as i see them working at it every morning to prepare. I would be very surprised if we have used frozen vegetables as we do not buy them . But i will check on this in case they run out of supply on the day.But regardless of this i again apologize as we try hard at the Inn to please.

We have just returned from a three night stay and all the reviews pretty much cover all you need to know about this hotel...We stayed in room 4 which has a lovely comfy 4poster bed and a suberb bathroom,ok there was a bit of noise from the bar on Saturday night but our only complaint was that we went to bed to early instead of joining in!! The best part of our stay was the staff who had smiles on there faces from early morning to late at night!!

Room Tip: Ask the staff for advise

Black Jacks is the quieter part of the Inn , well away from the main Inn. Ty Dre will be open later this year and will be similar . Thank you for the review.

Having read the reviews on Tripadvisor, my wife and I expected the Black Boy to be good, but the Hotel exceeded our expectations. The room was small (as described) but adequate and full of charm. The restaurant food was outstanding, better than we've enjoyed at very expensive and highly rated establishments. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished we'd booked for longer than the one night, but will be back.

Room Tip: If staying more than one night, the small rooms are not ideal. Pay a bit extra for more space.

We stayed here with 4 of our friends overnight on New Years Eve and would thoroughly recommend it. The service was very good from the day I booked to our departure. A very old quaint place with lots of character. The rooms were lovely with old fashioned furniture but huge beds and nice modern fitted bathrooms. Also the food was reasonably priced and excellent as were all the staff. Although we only live an hour's drive away we shall certainly visit again in the summer. Thank you to everyone there.

We stayed here for three nights over new year in an executive room in the Black Jacks annexe. The room was large, decorated to a high standard and with very nice furniture. The fab four poster bed was huge and very comfortable. The room had a kitchenette/diner and a nice bathroom although a little on the small side. Very high standards of cleanliness. Very nice touches included the helpful emails before arrival giving details of location and car park barrier numbers and advising not to haul your cases to reception as there was a separate entrance. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent; good choices, well cooked and nicely presented with friendly, hardworking staff. Breakfast room was a little crowded on the second day when everyone seemed to come down at the same time! The pub itself is lovely: quaint and cosy with a good bar menu and a restaurant room. Overall would highly recommend this as a place to stay in north wales.

Thank you for kind review .wish you both a happy new year. The Black Boy is a very olde Inn as you state and has been renovated over the last few years. Black Jacks rooms have mini kitchens in most of the rooms. As regards breakfast times , it does occur on occasions that all guests arrive at the same time particularly on Sunday mornings .We will look at this to see if we can allocate time slots.
