“Can not fault the place!!”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

I stayed in this hotel two consecutive nights each month for two years whilst attending a course in the area and couldnt fault it. Owners and staff were always so welcoming and friendly. Food was fantastic EVERY time and breakfast was beautiful.
Rooms were cosy and homely.
I highly recommend this hotel and will definately visit in the future when im in the area.

I cannot fault the friendliness of the staff here and they did try and sort out the issue we had. We had two rooms, one of us in Room 2 in the house which was toasty warm and delightful. My sister and I shared a room in the annex. I told them we were cold and they assured us the heating would be turned up. I spent the night wheezing due to the cold. In the morning we were offered a change of room into the main house. We snapped it up thinking of warm and toasty Room 2. Room 5 wasn't like this - of anything the second night was colder than the first. The heating doesn't swithchn on until 17.00 in the afternoon and that is too late for November - and a chilly one at that!
As said the staff were so friendly and so lovely I feel bad but the fact is that our stay was not as comfortable as I would have wished.
This is beautifully located in a town which ahs to be one of the firendlest on Earth!

We have stayed here before in the annexe which was OK but this time we were in the main house and there were real issues. Our daughters room had a blood stained duvet and the shower door was off the rails and could not be operated correctly. In our room there was no shower just a bath. Both rooms needed decoration at least and really renovation is called for.
breakfast was disappointing as far as the quality and quantity were concerned.

Having worked here many years ago when it opened as Plas Derwen. We were excited to see what it was like now, as it was not a B&B then.
We stayed in one of the annex rooms not in the main building. We were very pleased. The room was lovely and spacious and warm. Bathroom was fine too.
During our stay, they had a problem with the water (in the whole area, not just Plas Derwen)which was discolored due to work being done in the area. This was not a problem as we were were supplied with plenty bottled water and could have more should we need it.
The manageress and staff were friendly, polite, helpful and very hospitable.
I would definitely stay here again when I back in the area, and I would recommend Plas Derwen to anyone visiting the area.

Booked a couple of nights as we were going to a wedding nearby. Was thrilled with the size and cleanliness of the room. The hotel had a nice oldie worldie feel and the staff were extremely efficient and pleasant.
The breakfast choice was ample and we enjoyed both mornings choices. We did seem to wait a tad too long one morning, however the food was good.
The bathroom lights are quite dim, but did get brighter if you left them on a while and there wasn't really anyway to hang towels. I would have preferred a mirror over the dressing table/ desk to do make up, dry hair etc. the store room was above our room, which made it noisy from time to time as staff walked about.

Minor details really, for what was a really enjoyable stay. We would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Try get a room in the annexe, just far enough away from the road and the bar.

Stayed on night -left booking late and had to have single beds (our fault) room was nice. The staff were very good - booked our taxi for us too. Had breakfast next day which was good, fesh and hot. Could'nt fault it and would stay again. Booked it to dine at the Hardwick - quite a short ride about £7 but the actual dining experience was very poor. Not a very goode anniversary present and would'nt do it again

Room Tip: Would stay again

We stayed just the one night whilst attending a wedding locally. The Hotel staff were really friendly and welcoming and the rooms were comfortable and nicely proportioned. It could have done with a lick of paint in the odd place, but was certainly in keeping with the period of the hotel, and this included the annexes. Breakfast was good, but not artisan, and a good selection was available. We did not make any more use of the facilities, so am not able to comment further on the bar and evening meals.

Room Tip: The rooms in the Annex are big enough for a family (I think the sofa also doubles as a bed)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Plas Derwen is a fantastic pub restaurant which offers exceptional food at ordinary prices. Located within easy reach of the A40 and A465 (Heads of the Valleys Road), it was redeveloped to a high standard in April 2007. All our food is cooked to order, using produce from local suppliers, listed on the back of our weekly changing menus, enabling you to have a different dish with every visit. There is also a Specials board and a Fish Specials board for even more variety. This is a warm, welcoming venue with pastel colours and a large see through feature fireplace. The building dates back 600 years and the refurbishment has been sympathetically undertaken to reflect old meeting new. With contemporary furnishing, the traditional slant has been retained with many nooks and crannies around the pub. The Garden Room, Lounge Bar and double Conservatory are separate rooms offering different experiences. Some areas have leather sofas and leather tub chairs. ... more   less
