“Excellent use of the tithe barn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2014

It's just been refurbished to include the tourist office, a cafe, then upstairs a new interactive museum about the history of the area (has some very clever interactive displays for kids) and the town tapestry on display.

“good Welsh Exhibition”

The upstairs of the barn has the tapestry which is the main attraction, there is also a interactive exhibition of welsh history and religion which is very interesting. Also downstairs the information centre and cafe.

“Peaceful spot to eat and drink. ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014 via mobile

Stopped off in Abergavenny for morning coffee on our way to the Brecon Beacons. We were towing a caravan so used the spacious car park near the bus station. We walked out of the top of the car park and thought that we were in France - a beautiful building with outside seating in a square of clipped lime trees. The staff were very friendly and the coffee and scones excellent. So much so that we made it our stop on the return journey too.

Its a great pity that it has been spoilt by using it as a Tea Room, it could have been put to better use by housing a museum and keeping all the old features

StMarysPriory, Manager at The Tithe Barn, St Marys Church, responded to this review, 29 July 2014
I was sorry to read you felt that we had spoilt the ethos of the building by also providing a tea room. When we were set up we hoped to follow the Benedictine belief as fits the original St Mary's Priory and provide refreshments for visitors. In this day and age of no public funding we have to offer this service as an essential income stream to not only maintain the building but also the wider economies of the whole site. When the church took the building back it was in a very bad state of repair and has had various uses such as a local disco and more recently as a carpet show room. We have attempted to keep within the traditions as best as we can and I’m sorry you felt it to be spoilt.
Thank you for taking the time to respond on Trip Adviser.

“Quiet and peaceful break to soothe the mind.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2014

The town was very busy, restaurants full, we happen to be returning back to car park when we discovered THE TITHE BARN IN St Marys Church. looked very inviting, so in we went. Were immediately aware of peace and tranquillity plus a very inviting coffee bar and light lunches. Staff very attentive with quality food. Was ideal for a snack lunch where we enjoyed soup tea and coffee. Highly recommend if one wishes to escape from the normal Hubbub of cafes.
