We recently spent a weekend at the Castle Hotel for my husband's birthday. We stayed in a "deluxe room" but were a bit disappointed in the standard of accommodation (for the price charged). We usually stay at the Quay Hotel at Deganwy and wanted to try somewhere different on this occasion but wished we had stayed at the Quay Hotel in the end. The prices are comparatively the same but the hotels completely different. The Spa Hotel is modern and minimalist whilst the Castle Hotel is old and steeped in history. As a result you'd expect the odd creaks and groans as you pass through the old building, so no problem with that, but the standard of decorating leaves a lot to be desired. In the bathroom there was paint peeling off the ceiling and the standard of bathroom fittings was poor. The staff were efficient and generally friendly but not overly attentive, which was fine, but we would rate the hotel a 3* rather than 4* - it was hard to see how the 4th star had been achieved.
