“Country Lane Tour stay”
Reviewed 7 July 2012

We were part of a classic car tour group and had a double room overlooking the Llangollen Canal. The room was adequate for our needs but perhaps a liitle dated while the corridor carpet had seen better days. Other than that, all the meals were excellent while the waiting on staff were run ragged catering for our every need. The hotel is hidden from view from the road and is ideally placed for walks along the canal to Llangollen in one direction and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in the other direction as we did both.

Room Tip: We were in Room 21 from which I could wave to the people on the passing narrow boats and they waved...

bad service:
Upon arrival: no one at reception, even after ringing the bell a few times. Eventually had to look around for help. The lady who checked us in gave us the coldest welcome I ever received.
We were offered the key to a different room to have a shower (see below) but not a single apology

Bad room:
Bathroom ceiling covered in mould, as were the tiles.
Both shower taps broken
Too hot (even with radiators off and windows fully open)
bad smell in corridor

Meals:
dinner was good quality, but over priced
Breakfast was good.
Tables are all "pre-booked" so you can't seat where you want (i.e. next to the window to see the nice forest outside)

Summary:
Go somewhere else, it can only be better

Room Tip: chose another hotel. Even a B&B would be much better for that price.

Stayed for 4 nights using the £99.90 offer for 2 people for dinner, bed & breakfast per night. The hotel was clean & comfortable. The room had everything we needed but could possibly need a bit of decorating although we have stayed in much worse. The shower was fantastic & always hot. The food was the best thing about the hotel - it was very well presented always hot & tasted delicious & they did not skimp on the portions. The only thing lacking was evening entertainment although I feel most guests would not want it. The staff were very pleasant.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking towpath & gardens have an interesting outlook.

We stayed in Bryn Howel for a few nights having found it decent offer for £55 a night, the hotel is in a beautiful location outside of Llangollen, with amazing views from the main dining room, and the garden.

Our room was quite large, with all the usual amenities, very clean albeit a little dated. The staf was generally very accomodating and friendly, and we enjoyed some bar food which was really a pleasant surprise in that it was both tasty and affordable.

The breakfast buffet was one of the best we've ever had the pleasure of enjoying, the sausages were simply amazing, and there was even black pudding available.

Only drawbacks where things looking a little tired around the edges, flaking paint here and there, and we had the smallest CRT TV I've seen in quite some time in our room. Perhaps a lick of paint and investing in some flatscreen TV's would just give it that little extra.

Still, for the money definitely worth it.

We booked for one night the 'romantic package' which was excellent value for money Dinner, Bed & Breakfast and chocolates and flowers in the room. We came across this hotel through Trip Advisor. Whilst the rooms are little old fashioned and have that touch of 'dust' hanging in the air which you get in old buildings, the room was clean and nicely presented. The grounds are lovely. We had a lovely table which overlooked the garden. The food was absolutely excellent, the meat was beautifully cooked and the presentation was excellent. Superb breakfast with lots of choice and again the food was excellently cooked. Free wifi in the public areas. We walked to the Acquaduct along the canal from the hotel, which is approximately 35 minutes away. Lovely one night stay and would definitely go back.

We booked by phone, and asked for a room with a view, on arrival allocated room 35 a dark shabby room over looking the flat roof of dining room with its pipes and kitchen vents.
The dragon on the desk said the hotel was full and when we said we would find somewhere else she allocated a suite with a scowl at no extra cost. The suite was comfortable appeared recently decorated but not to a high standard, unfinished where the painter was concerned and a mismatch of fabrics. Bathroom nothing like the website photos, very dated, loo seat screaming to be replaced. The standard of cleanliness was good. Breakfast was of decent quality for a buffet and the service acceptable. Dinner was average but expensive and the service very good. However the staff were surprised to see us on the second night but still made us welcome. The dragon had not informed them of our reservation perhaps she did not like that I was unable to contact reception by the room phone as no numbers were displayed. She was quite short and rude in fact when I told her that this was a little problem. The bar meal we had on arrival was truly awful, out of the freezer stuff, and to get service in the bar was a find and seek excercise. The decor in the bar was not good, threadbare upholstery, fire canopy and log box needed a good bit of brasso, dated sun bleached curtains. They have a regular clientele here but even they were commenting in the shortfalls. The grounds and aspects are lovely which is the hotels saving grace.
This could be a fabulous hotel with a little bit care and attention . A warm smile on arrival, not a huffing puffing dragon. We had a nice break in Wales overall but cant see us back at this hotel.

Room Tip: not room 35,,, higher floor for views
