“Good base for Llangollen area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2012

Well maintained hotel, good breakfast, efficient staff, superb views. Hotel is a few miles outside Llangollen in a mansion formerly owned by a local industrialist. Park entrance looks a bit unloved before you gain the long avenue of trees that leads to the hotel whose real charm is only revealed from the opposite, restaurant-side where the views are excellent. A forest of mature, exotic trees make up the foreground park area while the humpy green hills above Llangollen, one crested with a castle, dominate the horizon. We only found this at breakfast time. Otherwise the approach to the hotel tudoresque entrance is underwhelming and the car park has a rather desolate appearance. Rooms are fine and have nice sets of shampoos, tea making outfit etc. TV a bit dated. Freeview lacked BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. Thought the price x quality equation balanced. Would stay there again. Breakfast worth looking forward to.

Room Tip: Try and get a room on the west side ie opposite side to the entrance

We recently stayed at the Bryan Howell as we are regular visitors to Llangollen. We have stayed in many hotels in Llangollen and would rate this as one of the best. The setting and gardens are fabulous, as was the breakfast, sausages to die for. The walk along the canal is reached via the path at the side of the car park and is a must, if not just for a breath of fresh air. We would stay again without hesitation but we have 1 small niggle. We had two rooms booked as a last minute through the internet, the morning of our stay actually. The rooms where located in the corridor just off reception. The issue we had was that the walls are so thin that you can here everything from the room next door. Infact our bed backed onto the bathroom/toilet in the next room and it doesn't need much imagination as to what we could hear through the wall. The other room that we booked for our daughters which was on the other side of ours, they had the television on at normal volume and the people in the next room where knocking on the wall to turn it down, and this was only early evening. My advice would be if you are booking rooms at this hotel make sure you get one in the main part of the hotel, we will certainly go back there, but only if we can get a room that does not have paper thin walls.

Room Tip: Get one in the main part of the Hotel.

We stayed in this hotel for one night - a Saturday night - which may have determined the staff.

The Good Points:

The hotel is situated in a stunning setting with the canal close by the hotel, surrounded by verdant hills.

The food is good - we had a bar meal on Saturday night - salmon with new potatoes and veg - very good. The breakfast was good and lots of it! The dining room has a lovely view over the vale of Llangollen.

The bad points

Apart from the receptionist, the staff were ranging from ok to indifferent - the worst being in the dining room, where the staff virtually ignored us. We had to ask for tea and coffee, then later on for toast. It's the little things that matter and I think a spot of training wouldn't go amiss. Just a simple "How are you?"; "Have you enjoyed your stay?"; "Would you like tea or coffee?"; "And some toast when you're ready?" I know they were very busy, but a few kind words wouldn't hurt! They seemed to be very understaffed in the hotel bar on Saturday night. No ice, either!

On a more general note, the decor needs updating, but the room was comfortable.

Recently stayed in the Hotel, Fell in love with the building as you come down the long tree lined drive and then you see this Beautiful Hotel set in wonderfull surroundings. I had a walk around the Hotel first before going in and noticed the narrow boats in the canal that runs alongside the bottem end of the Hotels gardens again a very Beautiful thing to see.
Walked into the hotel and it got better, room after room very clean and really nice looking , I knew then i was happy i booked this hotel.
The food here is 5***** and the setting of the restuarant are Fantastic looking over the Beautiful gardens and Welsh country side. Went to the bar and another lovely room.
This is one of the best Hotels in Llangollen and the staff are really nice.
Bedroom was large, a little dated but was very comfy and really clean , for the price i paid i was amazed as i just stayed in a hotel in Chester city ,i paid three times the price of here and it was no where near as good as this Hotel.
I will be coming back, many times as this is the only Hotel i will now stay in when i come to Llangollen....Thankyou to everyone who made us feel welcome.

My husband and I stopped over for one night here. The hotel and location are lovely, rooms seem to have either a view of the garden or the canal - both excellent, and our room was very clean. We had a superb evening meal and breakfast.

However, we would suggest that the hotel use mattress toppers as, though we had a reasonable nights sleep, we were aware of the springs in the mattress.

the staff we found to be polite and helpful and our breakfast was excellent and as i am disabled the holtel is very suitable
would we go back a third time...yes

Room Tip: some of the rooms still have an older type television, but ask to have it changed to a flat screen...
