We are still here in the cottage, and I am looking out of the magnificent bedroom window of swallow cottage. The views are simply amazing, and the location is superb. You simply could not ask for anything better. Its 7am and the sun has just burnt off the morning mist. Super walks from right outside your door, or take a short drive to visit many of the spectacular local sites. Jenny and Richard provide everything you need, snowy white bed linen and towels, along with a lovley hamper of food is awaiting you on arrival. WiFi connection cannot be faulted. Guess what....We will be booking another stay xx

Thank you for this review, if you come again in the better, more clement weather you will not only hear the trains, but also see them from the garden when we have the furniture out from undercover. It is always a pleasure to us when the trains start again after their short winter break, a bit like the return of first Swallows indicate summer's return, the return of the trains, when we see them chugging along at the bottom of the field is a reminder that spring will soon be on it's way.

“Lovely cottage in ideal location”
Reviewed 29 August 2013 for a stay in August 2013

My wife and two of our grandchildren stayed for a week. Cottage had everything we wanted, even the welcome pack was very nice. We loved the surrounding area and the small towns. Packed in a lot of sight seeing and walking. Our thanks to Richard for being such a good host.

“Blissful holiday”

We have just spent a wonderful week in Wagtails cottage - albeit helped by that rarity, a week of blue skies! The location is so peaceful and the view stunning yet enough to keep two small boys busy and happy. The cottage itself is excellent especially the really comfortable beds, and really well equipped. Richard and Jenny are the most hospitable hosts, with their two friendly dogs, the boys had a great time chatting to them. The welcome food basket was generous and definitely welcome.

There is plenty to do in the area, walks nearby, the steam train, canal and aqueduct, Chirk castle and Lake Bala not too far away. Llangollen is a lovely town though I imagine gets very busy at peak times. we also found some other interesting places to visit - Horseshoe Falls, the walk across Velvet hill to Valle Crucis Abbey, Rug Chapel was a real gem and the drive across Horseshoe Pass not to be missed, and the fun of sitting outside Britannia Inn (super food) to watch the hundreds of bikers making their way towards the Pass and the Ponderosa cafe.

We hope to be back for another lovely stay. Many thanks to Richard and Jenny for making us, and our grandsons, so welcome.

Thanks - we enjoyed your grandson's conversations too, we still have their drawings on our fridge, they make me smile whenever I look at them. If you can bring the same weather should you come again you will get an extra special welcome - though you would probably get one anyway.

A superb cottage situated in a fantastic spot. Cottage was spotless and everything you needed was there. The owners greeted us and explained and demonstrated how to use appliances. The actual cottage we stayed in {swallows} was spacious and comfortable, with the view from the bedroom upstairs to die for. The location was good as we know the area quite well. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will return in the future that is for certain.

“A great time had by all!”

Well it's a couple of weeks since we returned from our New Year's break and I'm already going back! In fairness it's only to collect the watch I lost ! The watch was very sentimental to me and I can't say how relieved I was when Jenny contacted me to say they had turned the cottage upside down and found it! This was just one example of the hospitality shown to us during the week we stayed in Wagtails.

Wagtails is one half of a barn conversion (Swallows being the other) which adjoins Richard and Jenny's main cottage. The conversion itself has been an excellent job with loads of original features retained including the amazing beams in the lounge and bedrooms. The cottage is fitted out to a really high standard and apart from your food there is really not much else you need to bring. The welcome basket is the best stocked one I've ever had!

We were travelling with two kids (15 & 11) and a young Golden Retriever and they equally enjoyed the break. Although active kids, both get a bit fed up after a few miles walking so it was great to for them to come back to the cottage and jump on the Xbox we had brought. Within minutes they had hooked it up to the cottage's HD TV, Home Theatre and Freesat. The great thing about the cottage is it's on three small levels (kitchen, lounge, bedrooms & bathroom) which meant we could relax in the kitchen with books and the radio whilst the kids FIFA'd away to their hearts content!

Four other things we loved;
1. The fire. Once we got it going it made the lounge even cosier. Richard & Jenny provide the first lot of kit but I suggest you also take your own as you'll want one every night!
2. The beds. Extremely comfortable but very difficult to get out of in the morning
3. The birds. From Wagtails lounge we had an excellent view of the feeders Richard and Jenny have across their own lawn. I'm probably a bit sad but I could have watched them for hours. The birds must have flocked from miles around. By the end of the week the kids were rolling their eyes each time I said 'wow, look at that one!' I'm no expert but I remember seeing 4 kinds of tit (always makes the kids smirk for some reason!), chaffinches, robins, woodpeckers, a nuthatch and even a pheasant feeding on the crumbs.
4. The WiFi. I imagine we're not alone nowadays when one of the amenities we look for when booking holidays is WiFi. For those that need it, the signal is strong with a speedy broadband connection!

Getting to the cottages is a doddle and although a little too far to stroll into Llangollen, there are enough walks nearby to keep you busy. We really enjoyed wandering down the hill towards the Dee and watching the steam train go past. Because of all the recent rain the Dee was extremely full so the kids and dog were kept at a safe distance. I imagine in the summer it would be great to spend a few hours down by the river.

One of the concerns we had before we went was the closeness of the cottages. We didn't want to disturb others with a barking dog or fighting kids but to be totally truthful, we didn't want to be disturbed either. We had nothing to worry about. I put it down to the thickness of the barn walls but we didn't hear a peep from the neighbours. I can only hope they can say the same about us!!!

So to summarise, all the above added up to a perfect cottage in a great location with excellent hosts. We can't recommend it highly enough!

Thank you very much, we were pleased we were able to find your watch, and the internet connection was up to the job. We find the area round here can offer many different types of activity, enough to suit different interests, with the comfort of a warm fire and a good book to come back to, (not to mention to joys of the internet gaming).

Best wishes Richard and Jenny

“Perfect place to chill out, a REAL home from home.”
Reviewed 17 November 2012 for a stay in November 2012

In need of a relaxing break we booked Wagtails cottage for us and our 2 Jack Russells. It looked loverly on thier Dee Valley Cottages web page, But the photos didnt do justice! We were welcomed by Richard and given the tour, The welcome basket was amazing, Litre of milk, full size thick cut loaf, cartoon of orange juice, block of local butter, bacon, sausage, and Rollo Cookies!!! PLUS eggs from Richard and Jennys chickens.Wagtails is like a tardis, set on four levels it is a stunning cottage, equiped to an unbelievably high standard, Furnished and decorated sympathetically to give a real farmhouse feel. The bed was HUGE!! and so comfortable. At night if you turned out the outside lights and walked up the lane ( with the provided torch) the low level of light polution means fab star gazing on clear night. The dogs loved it, but as rescue dogs at times were not as well behaved as we would like! hopefully we'll be allowed back! This is an ideal place for so many things, is within easy reach of Snowdonia, the coast, Castles, and so much more. if you just want to stay put you have an extensive collection of books DVD's and board games mobile phone access is patchy ( more like an advantage) but with free internet you arnt without contact. All in all LOVED it!!! Re tick boxes further down, Wagtails has stairs, but if this is a problem Swallows thier other cottage is disabled friendly..yes, tey really did think of eveything!
