“Period features and great service”
Reviewed 6 January 2013 via mobile

Stayed here on a trip with family in room 12 and had the spacious room to myself. Plenty of period features and furniture gave the place an authentic feel whilst a huge tele and free wifi provided mod cons (the wig cupboard at the side of the bed have me the creeps though) staff are very accommodating. First time staying in Llangollen and I'm looking forward to coming back.

The real reason I go to Llan (the full name "Llangollen" is for non-locals and other know-nothings) is to attend the bi-annual party of the century thrown by my brother. This means I could probably lie down in the High Street at 5.00am and get up 5 hours later and pronounce it the most comfortable High Street in the world. No one would complain if I did that because you can do anything in Llan and no one minds (incuding dive-bombing off the bridge into the foaming waters of the River Dee 50 feet below. Health & Safety? You're having a laugh. But I dont sleep on the pavement, instead I hand over a trifling sum of money to stay at Gales. For £20 a head (yes, really, not a misprint) 4 of us stayed in room 3 and for this paltry sum we got an enormous, soaring, rustic-beamed, room full of comfortable beds with its own excellent little bathroom and a cooked breakfast the next morning. Theres even free parking in the medieval courtyard, and a wall at the back that will not collapse if you accidentally reverse into it while telling your passengers a funny story. I speak from experience. Book into Gales quickly before they realise their prices are ridiculous and put them up, or fail to realise this important fact and go bust.

Stayed for two nights recently and ate in the hotel. The bar is cosy - a bit too cosy sometimes, it gets rather hot - and the food was pretty decent, although they did mess up the cooking of a couple of steaks a bit. The rooms are fairly good and my bed was comfortable. The shower was pretty rubbish, very weak, and because of the courtyard setup guests who want to go to bed early may be disturbed by smokers outside the bar.

But it's a friendly welcome, the food is hearty and there's a nice atmosphere about the place. I would probably have given it 3.5 if I could.

We booked for my birthday as I'm a wine lover. My girlfriend warned me that the rooms wouldn't be the best, but that I shouldn't care because we'd be hammered. She was right.

This is a great place to go for wine connoisseurs. The family is very knowledgeable and offer some of the higher end stuff at a much reduced price that what you might find elsewhere, preferring to add a fixed markup (more or less) to every bottle, rather than double the price. The result was a very good Gevrey-Chambertine for around 45 quid (which went down very nicely thank-you!)

We both really enjoyed the food too, despite some bad reports on here.

In fairness, the rooms do need some modernisation. I would put new carpets in, get rid of the naff TV's and replace the bathroom suites. I've stayed in some places with more traditional decor which have a certain degree of olde worlde charm. This doesn't.

That said, the main event was the meal and for this I can't fault the place. It's all about the people, the food, the wine (and the 50 yr old port in the cellar ;o) ).

First impressions were quaint , but mild confusion reigned when trying to check - in and locate reception which had moved to the main bar area .Car parking is very tight , but as mentioned before , the staff helped make room for our vehicles .
Had dinner in the bar on the first of a two night stay - somewhat surprised that the owners son would not reserve us a table whilst we took our luggage to the rooms and changed ; returned 10 mins later only to find an early evening rush had occured and the only table available was in a souless anti-room that was difficult to access past the owner and his guests who occupied a large table in the entrance to this area .
Meal was adequate , although two guests had the Mussels , some of which had not opened in the cooking process and should not have reached the table - cost about £25 per head for 2 courses and half a bottle of wine each .
No daught beer which was a definite disadvantage to our group , and which lead us into the plentiful local hosteleries .
Breakfast was fine , reasonable selection of continental engredients with cooked options -plenty of toast and hot beverages on offer . The serving staff were pleasant but looked a bit dishevelled , from the breakfast chef in his leather jacket , and the waitresses in various micro skirts and track suit tops - all could have done with simple loggoed uniforms .
Bedrooms were excellent in size , clean , and well presented - thankfully we were not above the bar area or too close to the street .
Overall a good experience , but needs to ratchet up the staff training , and their appearance.

Room Tip: Higher floors above the wine shop are good .

We ate at the restaurant on 29th October, and unfortunately were less than impressed. A nice fire burned as we settled down, but my meal of Mediterranean vegetable Linguine was more olives and sun ripened red tomato than anything else. Not much attention was made to my complaint apart from "I'll have a word with chef".

Really enjoyed our overnight, as the room was very comfortable, the evening was warm and sociable with gorgeous food and endless good wine!
If you're staying in Llangollen, you can't go wrong staying here, as the staff are friendly and helpful; you're right in the centre and will hear the tumbling water as your wake-up call! There's no need to step out of the hotel for food and drink, as you won't find better elsewhere and there's even a lovely shop on site with tasty Welsh goodies to take home as souveniers. Thank you Gales!
