“***Cottage 21*** A Fantastic Little Find!”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

*** This review is for Cottage 21, own and ran by Gales (not the hotel) ***

We stayed a couple of nights in August 2014 at Cottage 21, just down the road from the Gales Hotel in Llangollen.

Its a great little cottage with lots of room for all the family. With 2 doubles and a single you could fit a few more in actually. (there are also 2 generously sized futons in the large conservatory if you wanted to bring more numbers)

Richard (the owner) came and met us at the hotel and checked us in. A nice box of chocolate biscuits were waiting for us on the kitchen table and there was also some milk in the fridge along with a few other bits and bobs (tea, coffee, sugar etc). The cottage is well stocked with everything else you would expect, fridge, dishwasher, microwave and a 40" inch TV in the lounge complimented by smaller ones in both bedrooms.

We had a takeaway from the chinese opposite the hotel one night which was very nice, and there are plenty of other eateries in the town which we just did not get chance to sample. We also visited the softplay for the kids (It's called Dragons Den, located on the high street) and this was also very good to let the kids have a run around when it was raining outside.

I would recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to stay in the area, from families, to couples to larger groups of friends.

We will be back.

(The only very minor gripe was the parking, the street is very narrow and the only parking bays available are for residents only, so you are best using the coop just up the steps opposite the cottage to unload. Richard kindly let us then move our car into the hotel car park for the duration of our stay.)

Oh, and with this in mind if you do have little ones staying with you be very careful when entering and exiting the property as the road is narrow and I think a few locals may use it as a bit of a shortcut round the back of the town centre (some at speed, so be careful).

A very warm welcome, the rooms we stayed in were all beautifully presented and stocked with towels, tea, coffee and biscuits. A nice addition of some port was also very welcome.
The included continental breakfast is good, you are constantly supplied with extra toast.
Some, but not a lot, of parking in the rear. We never got to try the restaurant itself, but it smelt great!
Very friendly and knowledgable staff.

Just returned from a Saturday evening in Llangollen staying in this B & B. The rooms are full of character, individual and very comfortable, even with a carafe of port provided in the room.
The resturant and bar is very lively, breakfast continental, adequate but not very inspiring.
Cooked breakfast a fiver extra, which was a bit over the top.
Free parking and plenty of outside areas.
Owners and staff very friendly and helpful

Just spent last Saturday night at Gales, first impressions were good and it is quirky hotel. We were allocated Room 11 at the top overlooking the car park. Nice big room with a very comfy double and one single bed. Bathroom tiny and you can just about turn around in a very small shower cubicle. Shower gel dispenser in the shower and soap dispenser by the sink not refilled and very difficult to operate. It was a beautiful day and the sun was pouring through the window so we decided to shut the big heavy curtain. Within a minute the rail came crashing down from above the window pulling the very tiny fixings straight from the wall. We immediately reported it and went out. We got back to our room quite late to be very disappointed as we found the curtains were still lying on the floor. No note of apology, nothing. I pulled down the sash window down and made a makeshift job of making our room private. however with the window open we had to suffer the noise from rowdy people at the back of the hotel until well after 2am. Once it went quiet we had a reasonable night. We woke up to a glorious Sunday and we were looking forward to breakfast. However to our dismay there was a little notice on all of the tables stating if you wish to have a cooked breakfast it was £5 extra. Maybe we overlooked it during the booking process but it was not very clear that it was bed and continental breakfast. The continental breakfast selection did not look up to much but the cooked breakfast was excellent. Then we checked out and listened to a chaps views about using booking sites and how much money they make and if we had booked directly we could have had a free bottle of wine with an evening meal. Right we thought now is the time to remind the hotel of our curtain issue. The chap seemed unaware we had reported the issue the evening before and offered a lukewarm apology, and no more.

Highly recommend the hotel having just visited this weekend. Rooms well equipped for a budget weekend trip and the wine bar and shop well stocked. It was a real pleasure to stay somewhere with good friendly service and a bit of character for a change! Breakfast very good too.

Four of us stayed here for a couple of nights while walking Offa's Dyke path. It's a good place.

Our bedroom was large and very comfortable. The wine bar is informal and fun. A good selection of wine (sadly no draught beer - but it is a wine bar) and some very good food. Good stuff to share for starters and good main courses. The staff were friendly, and it has a great atmosphere. I'm not sure you can book a table, but if you get there reasonably early you should be OK - we were.
They even left a decanter of port in the bedroom - nice touch.
Breakfast was good too.
Car park is a bit of a squeeze.
All in all well worth a visit.
