“nice overnight stay”
Reviewed 14 September 2012

Stayed one night at this hotel. made me welcome nice big clean room overlooking the river. Very good breakfast. One tip if you arrive by car when you turn into street the carpark is across from the HSBC bank just after the hotel entrance. It is a small yard.

Room Tip: phone hotel to get a riverside room.

We stayed at the Royal for three nights and had a room overlooking the River Dee. Stunning sight and sounds of fast moving waters. A good sized room, very clean. A proper cooked breakfast, so much better than those awful buffets. Really nice people run this hotel and I get the impression they intend to restore it to its former glory. I hope they are successful. We will return !

Reception was drab and empty when we popped in, we were told that they usually charge £125 for a family room, but they would give us one for just £89 - all seemed fine, the room itself was on the top floor, which isn't much good if you have to carry a baby and have a moaning toddler as well. the room seemed alright, albeit a little old. Shower facilities were terrbile the head of the shower was loose and the water pressure was pretty useless. Wi-Fi wasn't availble throughout the hotel, according to the brochere its only available in the lounge, which was irritating.
the biggest issue here was the floor..it is massively bowed - as a result, its like you are laying the wrong way down a hill and all the blood rushes to your head - because of a late night we didn't realise this till gone 12am when we got to bed by which time it with kids it was too late to do anything about it. the gentlemen on reception was kind enough to refund some of our money for the inconvience.
it seems that we had much the same experience (possibley same room) as ian911.

the breakfast was alright, but I much prefer a hot buffet breakfast. Radio One was playing loudly, we're a young family, and all of us like drum n bass, even at 8am, but I'm not sure the 70+ year olds at the other table were enjoying it quite as much.

Room Tip: try and get one with a river view if possible.

Interesting place! We stayed one night at the Royal in July 2012, paying 79.50 for bed and breakfast. We were a little nervous after we saw the reception, which while displaying faded signs of the hotel's Victorian grandeur smelt rather strongly of stale cigarette smoke. The strange 1970s-style sofas (see pictures) also created a rather eccentric impression. However, things improved when we found our top-floor room, which was very large with gorgeous views over the River Dee. The room furnishings were comfortable, despite being of a certain vintage (I suspect a remnant of the hotel's Forte days). Time had taken a greater toll on the bathroom fittings, but all was clean and worked satisfactorily, apart from iffy water-pressure in the shower. The tea and coffee facilities were as one expects in British hotels. The breakfast room, at the front of the hotel, appeared to recently have been refurbished (perhaps the reception is next?). Breakfast was very good, with plenty of cooked options. Service was friendly. A great option for dinner is just a block up-river at the Corn Mill. Quite exceptional food and a wonderful environment. Llangollen itself is a lovely place - thoroughly recommend a trip on the steam railway and a visit to the aqueduct!

Overall, the Royal is a characterful place in a beautiful location with friendly service. If you can live with the idiosyncrasies outlined above, it's worth a go.

the room was not worth £89.00 it needed updating and the old woolen blankets on the beds need throwing away!!!!! home made wardrobes, dressing table and bedside cabinets were not very attractive!! our friends had a large room with seperate lounge area and paid the same price as us! breakfast was good and views were good. if booking avoid room 216

Room Tip: dont book room 216

I stayed here last Saturday on a 1 night stay. I was off zorbing with my friend (both of us in our 50's) the following day. She booked it. The staff were very nice and friendly. Our twin room was huge with a separate lounge area. Views were fabulous. The hotel could do with some refurbishment in places but you forgive this for the friendly staff and views.
Breakfast was plentiful - staff asked several times if we wanted extra drinks, toast etc..very attentive without being obtrusive.
Lovely area - some nice bars and a very good steak house.
We are considering returning with a couple more friends for another overnight visit.

Room Tip: We had a twin room upstairs and it was huge. Everything you needed was in there.
