Booked here for 2 nights as, from the pictures, it was in a beautiful location on the Horseshoe Pass Road. When we arrived, there was no-one on reception, but someone came when we went looking. It all looked rather dingy. However, our room was large and warm and the bed comfortable. We decided to eat in the hotel that night and dutifully went down to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The bar area looked like a chaotic office with paperwork and invoices spread out over several surfaces (including the bar). Paint and plaster were peeling off one wall and the carpet needed a good vacuuming. I asked for a Gin and Tonic and it took the young girl ages to come and tell me that they hadn't any ice!!!!!. The restaurant was a separate room from the bar, but was very basic and also rather dingy. The meal was enjoyable and tasty and the young lad who served us was very pleasant.
Next morning, the shower was only a dribble and took ages to get warm. Breakfast took rather a long time to come - 45 minutes and was fried hard . When we requested more coffee, we were told that there was no more filter coffee but we could have instant. The poor woman was Eastern European and was doing her best and was obviously conscious of the hotel's shortcomings. There was no evidence of the owner/manager at any time. Needless to say, we didn't eat there on our second night and left early the next morning.

Arrived Friday 21st march 2014 the lady behind the bar had only been working there 4 days and called the proprietor for help She did not even acknowledge us and proceeded to insist payment for the stay was made there and then. We were not made to feel welcome at all and the proprietor made no effort to acknowledge us even though we were the only people spending any money. As the weather turned and was raining heavily we decided to stay and eat. The food was poor and the breakfast was terrible. Having waited an hour and a half for it to arrive it was scant and of poor quality.
The rooms are outdated and the furniture is falling to pieces. The radiator could not be switched on and the room was cold. There is carpet in the filthy bathroom and I dare not look to closely. Bloodstains were found on the duvet cover. You can hear every noise from the room next door from them switching on the light switch to using the toilet. We had booked for 2 nights but after the first night we could not bare to stay the second night and left as quickly as we could.
Thank you for ruining our friends 50th birthday!

We arrived late and needed dinner. After eating a disgusting steak for £16 we went up to our room. They upgraded us to their best room which was nice of them. It's the one with the four poster bed. The room was gross and needed every upgrade. As my girlfriend counted the pubes in the bathroom all I wanted to do was leave in the morning. We couldn't as it was booked through a website and we had checked in. WE DIDN'T EVEN COMPLAIN AS IT WAS THAT BAD it would need a professial commercial clean and many other tradesman (plumbing, plasterer, decorator, carpetener, etc). We stayed out as long as possible! The whole pub smelt like something died! Dunno how this place has received OK to good reviews! Must be there friends. Hotel hell candidate!
Staff was friendly though.

Room Tip: Lord moreton. Simple but clean and reliable

checked in, went through to stairs and it smelled like the sewers. Room seemed ok at first glance although decor was dated but checked out 30 minutes later. My wife is not a snob but she just couldnt face sleeping there after she found wee stains all over the toilet, used tissues the back of it and stains on the bed cover which were coming off with a baby wipe which proves they had not been washed. Should of complained but doubt if it would of made a difference and just wanted to get away quickly.
Maybe we were unlucky and it was housecleaners day off. Ok if you you are happy to rough it but being our anniversary weekend we wanted something better!

We've been to this hotel before and went back because it's in a nice place, has good beer and for the price, you can't complain. The staff are friendly enough. Rooms are lovely and warm plus theres plenty of hot water. The cleanliness standards aren't perfect, there's dust down the back teles for example but if you don't go looking for it, you won't find it. Although the beds are comfy theres no "soft close" on room doors so you can hear doors banging. There's lots of "tat" dotted about the hotel, if they just took away all the old plastic flowers, the place would look a lot better. There are beers on sale from the on-site brewery. Food service can be slow but it's really nice when it does arrive and it's good value. Dogs are allowed in the bar. For £45 a room for a night you really can't complain. If you're paying these prices, you can't expect the earth.

Other reviewers are right in that the room décor needs some TLC and the property has a 'dated' feel. But my room seemed clean enough and was sufficiently comfortable for my one night stay. Plenty of hot water provided an enjoyable bath (made up for leaking shower pipe and the horrid weather outside!).
Bowl of fruit in the corridor was a nice touch (offset the crumbling plaster).
Evening meal of 3 lovely Welsh lamb chops, mint sauce and chunky chips complimented by beers brewed on the premises....not bad at all.
Had a nice meaty kipper for breakfast along with a good supply of coffee, toast and jam. The full fried breakfasts looked good too.
The younger staff were friendly and helpful which ensured a welcoming ambience.
The accommodation here provides excellent value for money in the area: as long as you don't expect fancy frills I would have no hesitation in recommending an overnight stay. I'll certainly be back again if I can get the same room rate.

After paddling down the Dee I didn't much care that the bath was avocado, the water was hot and plentiful. The room had clean sheets and I was handed clean towels by staff.
The receptionist was also doing the bar and could not have been friendlier or more helpful.
The beer was great and the evening meal was tasty...under £8 for the best liver & bacon I have ever tasted. My mate's pork chops similar praise. Comfy bed and better than average breakfast.
Chap next to me at breakfast complained that the place was stuck in a time warp; possibly true.
If you turn up with champagne expectations you will be disappointed; turn up with an open mind and a sense of humour and you will probably be ok.
