“a very pleasant discovery......”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 September 2011

I think I stayed at Bryn Eglwys 10 or 15 years ago under previous ownership when it was good but perhaps a little tired so it was with some reservations that we booked in when we discovered the hotel we wanted to stay in couldn't accomodate us. I was encouraged by earlier reviews on this site.

Suffice to say I am very pleased we chose to stay here. The welcome is warm and the hotel cosy and comfortable. The food is excellent too.

Any dislikes? Perhaps having to make our dinner choices early in the day but I entirely understand why. This isn't a big hotel and the food is freshly prepared so it probably isn't possible to do it any other way.

Would I stay again? Certainly!

My husband, and I along with our dog, have just had a lovely stay ay the Bryn Eglwys. Our room was 17, it was modern, clean and comfortable, which we needed after our very long riverside and hill walks in the beautiful and breathtaking Beddgelert. Sara, who served our drinks in the bar and our breakfast was friendly and attentive. We look forward to returning soon.. 10 out of 10 for a great country house hotel.

Staying here was a terrific base for the region and a good cenral place from whence to siege the castles of north wales.
Meals were well prepared and substantial- arguably much too substantial in the evenings and we are not the smallest australian couple you will ever see!
Extremely clean throughout and excellent bathroom fittings which must have come from a recent makeover.
A short walking distance to the other amenities in the township of Bedggelert .
Add to this some of the most spectacular vistas from our room and the dining room area of the river, waterfalls and soaring peaks on both sides of the valley make this place outstanding value.
Then to cap it off you get Sara! The bubbliest personality you can imagine to greet you warmly each morning and serve dinner each night. She had the dining room in stitches half the time and wrapped around her little finger the other half. The hospitality industry needs more people like this Welsh Rarebit! (Poor pun, sorry)

We stayed here on the 5th to the 7th Aug looking for a leisurely weekend. Mine host Kevin gave us a brief but concise run down on how to access the hotel amenities before escorting us to our room. The room with its en-suite bathroom was furnished to a very high standard and clearly a lot of effort had gone into maintaining that standard throughout the hotel. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel on both days and found the quality of the produce used, the cooking and the service to be exemplary. All in all given its location and surrounding area this hotel takes some beating.

we stayed at the hotel for two nights,I have to stress that Michael ,who checked us in and looked after us for the majority of the stay was exceptional, he helped us in every way possible and made us feel very welcome, I think we also met the owners who were also very friendly and went out of their way to try and help us in our quest for a taxi..

so everything went well till we arrived at breakfast at 9:45 on Sunday morning..

when we checked in Michael had told us breakfast was served from 8 till 10., I think on the Saturday we pitched up at 9:35 is.. and Michael was most accommodating and swiftly brought us a fantastic breakfast.

so on Sunday we arrived at 9:45 for breakfast,, a younger welsh lady, that we had never seen before, was on the scene.. she bluntly told us breakfast had finishes at 9:30am and we would not receive any breakfast.. she was obviously now in charge.

we explained that we had been told 10am and Michael agreed this and kindly offered us toast by way of apology, she was unmoved and then oddly told us to go to lynn's cafe, where I quote she said 'to be honest their breakfasts are much better than here'.... (we later found this to be untrue)
with that we walked out , embarrassed to have been dealt with so abruptly.
10 minutes later Michael came to our room to say that he would be willing to make us breakfast after he had had a conversation with the lady, and apologised profusely. unfortunately we did not want to return to the breakfast room and the hostility we had received from the young lady.

on checking out 20 minutes later, the lady had pre-empted our request and removed a whopping £4 each for breakfast,, we had pretty much assumed at least £10 each as the breakfast the previous day was outstanding.(fyi the room charge for b and b was £100 per night)

she very begrudgingly ..after much persuausion. moved up to £15 (7.50 each) .. we explained that for the gesture of an extra £5 (2.50 each) we would have gone away happy, but she she would not move.we again stressed that we would not recommend this hotel on our experience with this lady and we would not stay here again.. she simply shrugged and said,,I quote' oh well . never mind'

I should also stress that Michael had tried to suggest this ammendement to the bill before we even asked but she shot him down, with an I 'm in charge type put down,,

I suggest the owners and this lady listen to Michael more, as he knew exactly how to handle this situation and should be given the credit he so deserves..he is great asset to the hotel.
so all in all, this lady . was not a poor ambassador for a hotel, and sullied what could have been a great experience,,

RatterWales, Owner at Bryn Eglwys Country House Hotel, responded to this review, 10 August 2011
I confess to being a little perplexed by this review as it is entirely devoted to the perceived shortcomings in service, and yet this is the one category for which this reviewer has elected to give us a score of five out of five. That notwithstanding, I have investigated this incident and believe that there are some points that deserve clarification.

Firstly we serve breakfast from 8am until 9.30am and have done for the 11 years that we have been here. We will normally serve late arrivals for a few minutes after that. These times are published in the room information, and appear not only under 'M' for 'Mealtimes', but also 'B' for 'Breakfast'. Neither Michael nor I can fathom what possessed him to misinform this reviewer about the times of breakfast beyond simple human error. With this in mind it becomes easier to understand why Sara told this reviewer that breakfast had finished: it was because breakfast had finished, and she had no way of knowing that Michael had told them otherwise. When it had become clear that was the case, the couple in question were offered cooked breakfast in the restaurant, cooked breakfast in their room, and even sandwiches to take with them in the event that they were under pressure of time. All of these offers were rejected. At checkout the compensation initially demanded by the reviewer was a 50% reduction in her bill, ie £99, but after a period of bartering a figure of £15 was agreed. Sara did try to contact both my wife and me (for the first time in 11 years neither of us was in the hotel at checkout time) but mobile coverage is very sparse in this part of North Wales and she was not able to do so in a timely manner. Once Sara believed the matter to be resolved (and after all of our offers to feed them had been rejected) and good humour to be restored, she made a light hearted response to their question about where they might now get breakfast.

Many of the guests who have stayed with us in the last 3 years since Sara joined us will not recognise her from the way she has been portrayed in this review. As good as Michael is, this whole incident was precipitated by his uncharacteristically misinforming these guests about the times of breakfast. Had he not done so, none of this would have happened. With that in mind, I am sure that the reviewer will understand if I do not listen to Michael more, as she advocates, rather I shall ensure that he gets it right next time.

We have spent another very happy holiday at Bryn Egwylys where nothing was too much trouble for our hosts Kevin and Lyn. Our bedroom had been upgraded, very tastefully decorated and fitted out as I believe had the rest of the bedrooms.
The restaurant is light and airy with windows round three sides for guests to enjoy the scenery and there is a comfortable lounge where guests meet before the evening meal.
We have very much enjoyed our meals starting the day with a hearty breakfast courtesy of Kevin and at the end of an enjoyable day, our evening meal superbly cooked by Lyn.
The hotel its beautiful surroundings, peaceful serenity and friendly atmosphere is a joy to visit and of course we will be visiting it again next year.
