“Lovely Friendly Small Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

I have stayed here twice in the last 6 months whilst attending art courses at the hotel. On both occasions Ruth, the owner, made everybody very welcome. I stayed in a double on the first visit and a twin on the second. Both rooms were spotlessly clean, light and attractively decorated. There are plenty of public rooms including a small bar, a spacious conservatory and a comfortable TV lounge.

Breakfasts and dinners are freshly made, plentiful and delicious. There were also plenty of homebaked cakes on offer with afternoon tea which were impossible to resist.

Ruth is a lovely hostess and an excellent cook, she has a small and efficient team of staff who work hard to ensure your stay is enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend Sygun Fawr.

We have enjoyed several weekend breaks at this special place and we continue to be delighted .The view is amazing and it is a joy to look at the mountains and the sky.
Ruth is a caring hostess and a first class cook.....the menu appeals to all tastes and the portions are generous. She is assisted by young, smiling and helpful staff.
Our room was clean and cosy with a modern en suite.....no TV in the bedroom, but that completed the peaceful atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask Ruth for a room with a view when you book.....

This is the third time I have visited Sygun Fawr and it remains as delightful as ever. Ruth is always very welcoming, the rooms continue to be clean and comfortable with every facility you could ask for. The food is wonderful with good choice and generous portions. Ruth's team are hard working and extremely helpful. One young man kindly brought me a newspaper from Beddgelert when he went out.
I disagree with the comments about lack of TV in rooms and phone/internet access. To me, it is great to have a break from such things - and there is a TV in the lounge, and internet access in the conservatory, if needed.
Also the midges don't come in to bedrooms if you don't open your window until after you have turned out your light!
hypefreetravel who wrote a very derogatory review of the hotel must have stayed in a different place. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated and plenty big enough and the hotel certainly does not have an identity problem.

We had a wonderful greeting from the owner Ruth and received a clear impression that everything would be done to make our family stay very enjoyable. We had one basic double room which was compact but with a very nice bathroom and a spacious family room for 2 adults plus a sofa, which at night became a double bed for 2 young children.
There was a very good choice at breakfast and it was individually cooked to order. The quality was excellent and the bacon in particular was brilliant. I have yet to find a better quality breakfast in any 5 star hotel. There is no lunch service, although packed lunches can be provided. The dinner was superb with a good choice and the best lamb shank I have ever experienced. Drinks were reasonably priced for this quality of hotel and the service was excellent throughout. The bar and lounges were very nice and comfortable.
There is a large TV in one of the lounges but none in the bedrooms. Wifi is available but the service is a bit intermittent and the re-router needs to be re -set from time to time
The approach to the hotel is along a half mile, single lane road with not much in the way passing places. However, there is very little traffic and the hotel makes it all worth while. I cant remember better food in any of my numerous visits to Wales over the last 50 years.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are on the small side. If this would worry you then better to go up a grade

Sygun Fawr has an identity problem. Is it a motel or a country house hotel? The room we were in was tastelessly and cheaply decorated, had a stained carpet, a tiny sliver of soap and plastic packet of shampoo in the bathroom – what you’d expect in a motel, except motel rooms give you room for your bags – unlike the room we were in. On the other hand the location is great, the food is good and the public rooms are what you expect in a country house hotel. But even the beautiful setting was spoiled for us when we arrived at check-in time and found no one around. We rang bells, pushed buttons and shouted for 10 or 15 minutes before the owner showed up and weakly apologized that perhaps the bell wasn’t working. That was the last we saw of her.

Later when we turned up the radiator and nothing happened, we rang and again no one answered. Finally, someone in the kitchen came out and said there had been a problem with the heating system. It did get fixed, but the lack of personnel seems to be a problem (one of the servers told us they were understaffed).

On our 2nd night we were informed there would be a group in the restaurant for dinner, which there was. This loud party so dominated the public spaces even before dinner that eventually we decided against eating dinner and went to our small room for some peace. A real country house hotel with such a small number of rooms ought not to allow groups to ruin the experience of individual guests. All in all our stay was a disappointment; we did not feel welcome or that this was good value.

Room Tip: Avoid room 12

Following a recent stay at Sygun Fawr I do feel the need to give an honest review. Firstly I must say that this is at no detriment to Ruth and her staff who were more than welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble but there is a but......

The initial approach to the hotel is not for the faint hearted and needs a confident pair of hands at the wheel to navigate the extremely narrow steep ascent/descent to and from the main road/hotel, that's during the day! Didn't bother to attempt at night, no passing points worthy of mention.
From the gallery photos the 'hotel' rooms appear somewhat larger than they actually are if ours was anything to go by. Maybe we were just unlucky having a very small room with little room for manoeuvre not to mention luggage. Whilst it was tidy and clean I did find hair in the bed, stained and rather old pillow cases (holes included) and pillows (smelly) as well as a clear view of a possibly rather well used mattress lets say! Didn't have the heart to say at the time and we just agreed to stay put in that room.
The bathroom was lovely and clearly has been recently updated but perhaps if you are going to add in little extras in shampoo/soap etc it would be worthwhile also upgrading the quality of these in keeping with what you are trying to promote of a luxury country house inc bubble bath maybe? Just thinking what is provided elsewhere for the same level.
This was the first time too, that we have stayed in ANY hotel with no TV in the room. Again for this level of country house hotel and its rural location, think a TV would be an asset.

Breakfast choice was immense and of exceptional quality including locally sourced yoghurts etc, lovely however; I did feel a degree of 'hard sell' to book in for dinner. This was quite irritating but we did choose to have dinner on one occasion. What we had was nice plain home-cooking but again, attention to detail of the little extras were lacking.
The dining areas were great, relaxing and spacious.

WiFi for those that need it is installed but probably not enough when the hotel is quite busy and, you need to be in certain parts of the building to get on the WiFi. No phone signals of course being in a national park, understandable.

Leave your windows open at night at your peril but if you prefer to be cool and don't mind little tiny flies/midges then go for but get in they will!

There's no doubt that Beddgelert is beautiful and I've been visiting these parts for some years and will continue to do so but, really feel strongly that despite a lovely welcome from the delightful owner that Sygun Fawr needs a bit of an overhaul, updating with perhaps a smidgen of this century all in keeping with it's Welsh country house title of course. Please consider new pillows and mattresses!!!

Garden delightful, friendly cats and beehives to boot. Lovely views.

If you want to forget the outside world, like the simple stuff and relish the tranquility of North Wales then Sygun Fawr is great but luxury and News 24 I'm afraid it isn't quite there.
Thank you.

Room Tip: Please be specific when requesting rooms if you require WiFi, space etc.

We stayed here for valentines weekend, and were a little apprehensive of the journey due to the infamous storms and the complaints about the narrow driveway. In fact the hotel was very easy to find and the drive way, although steep, was no issue for our family car.
Unfortunately due to the atrocious weather many bookings had been cancelled, but this did not stop the owners from welcoming us into their hotel.
We had the pick of the rooms and were made to feel welcome straight from our arrival. The room was clean and spacious and very peaceful with stunning views of mount snowdon.
We ate in the restaurant and the food was first class and such good value for money.

The only smallest niggle we had was there was no TV in the room and what with it being such bad weather our evenings were reluctantly spent indoors. However there was plenty of board games and books and a shared Lounge area.

Overall a beautiful hotel in a stunning location. A perfect retreat for a weekend in the country!
