“The Vagabond Bunkhouse, Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia”
Reviewed 3 January 2013

THIS IS WHAT WE CALL A PROPER BUNKHOUSE!!

6 of us stayed between Christmas and New Year for a walking holiday in Snowdonia. Location is excellent, easy walking into town and easy trip to any of the Snowdon walking routes.

The first night of our stay we all headed into town for food and drinks. When we got back a few of us fancied a nightcap and so text the manager and he came back to the bunkhouse and opened the bar (we have stayed in loads of hostels and this is the only one where we have had an offer like this so we weren't going to leave without putting it to the test). Well, one drink turned into another and the next thing we knew the bar was full and the beer was flowing, watch out though, the chilli vodka has a right kick on it.

There were families and ladies staying last week and we never had any issues with using the showers or the drying room and as it rained almost non stop everyone returned to the bunkhouse wet so the showers were in almost constant use.

The second night we decided to stay at the bunkhouse as we were all tired from the walk but still up for a party!! The shepherds pie with veg and wedgies was fit and enough to fill 6 growing lads. James behind the bar should be on commission as we had more to drink than we intended but as one of the other parties staying said "We are on our holidays!!"

From the minute we arrived to the second we left we were made very welcome and all 6 of us have said we will definitely return so watch out The Vagabond, we'll be BACK!

Well, we are just back from our third stay at the Vagabond and I've got to say we've had another GREAT STAY!!

The first thing we noticed was the new bar area.... it's been extended, the number of wines, local whiskies and ales on offer must have trebled! The husband enjoyed several well priced ales in the bar whilst I sampled a couple of wines with Mark, the manager....well it would be rude not to! Every time we come back to the Vag we are treated like long lost family members, it's great. This time we stayed for dinner too and we can heartily recommend the Chunky Chilli Beef, beautifully tender and plentiful!

We were in room 3 this time. The flooring has all been updated as have the beds, bedding and curtains. We were always happy enough with the standards for the price we were paying but it really does make the Vagabond stand above other hostels when you are tucked up in freshly laundered Next bedding if you please!!

As usual, a hearty breakfast set us up for the day all though our time at the bar meant we didn't feel up to climbing Snowdon on day one..a quick run up Llyn Elsi blew away the cobwebs and set us up for round 2 lol.

We did get up the mountain on day 2 and as usual Mark and Cally made sure they know what route we were taking and when we expected to be back. It's reassuring to know they look out for you! CAn't believe you let me away with calling you Kelly all this time, apologies CALLY! xx

Overall, another fabulous stay, thanks so much for always making us so welcome, love you guys!! xxx

this is my second time of staying at The Vagabond, Mark, Kelly and all the staff are such a great bunch could do enough for me. The Vagabone is like a home from home !. rooms are great and just whats needed for a great stay, Breakfast really was enough to set me up for the day.great value for the money. I don't see how some people can give bad comments on this place or say that they should be privileged to stay here the manager Mark and all the staff should be proud of what they do and how they treat their guest. I WOULD CHANGE A THING GUYS your doing such a great job would recommed to anyone. KEEP IT UP GUYS CANT WAIT TO RETURN.

Room Tip: all rooms i have stayed in where great.

So there are about 35 ish beds and 3 toilets!
Then one room with 4 shower cubicles which guys can't use if there is a woman in there!
Beds are wooden structures bolted to the wall with a reasonably comfortable mattress but duvet was far to thin. I was just about warm enough by using a second duvet from an unused bed. One chair in a room that sleeps 6 and absolutely no other furniture so all you clothes and kit has to stay on the floor.
Breakfast was ok but rationed portions, although tea coffee and toast were freely available.

For the £28 we paid for a bed value was pretty much non existent.

Bizarrely I felt like I was intruding on his home (even though he doesn't live on site) and I had the impression from the owner I should have been privileged to stay there!

Maybe ok for a group of young lads but for a few quid more we could have stayed in a decent b&b or a Travelodge!

Thanks for your review Ben. We take all criticism on the chin providing it's accurate, true and fair. We do however have 4 toilets in the Vagabond not 3. One on each of the floors and 2 on the ground floor.

Sorry the lady in the shower inconvenienced you. Most gents would understand it and give her a bit of space. However, we are at present submitting planning permission to extend the showers, bar area and it will also give us an extra 2 toilets making 6 in total. Bunkhouses use bunkbeds, so those wooden structures you refer to are our handmade bunkbeds. I don't know what else we could do to accommodate you on this one and we are looking to improve our "Tog" rating on our duvets.

We do not feel the need to put unnecessary furniture in the bunkrooms to give guests the maximum space to move around. All bunkbeds have pegs attached to accommodate your kit/gear and we have plenty of seating in the bar and common room where most people congregate to socialize after a hard day out in the mountains.

The Vagabond prides itself on its breakfast - egg, bacon, sausages, beans, mushrooms unlimited
filtered coffee, tea and toast all for £5.00. If you had wanted more Ben you should of just asked.
Mark the Vagabond manager who is distraught from your review always gives a warm "home" welcome and I can assure you that I was not present at the Vagabond that day/evening. So, I have not got a clue who you were talking to!?

Sorry you feel that you will never return. The Vagabond will always extend a warm welcome to you if you ever change your mind at £18.00 per person per night we feel give's good value for your money.

Kind Regards

We wanted a cheap and cheerful bunkhouse whilst we climbed Snowdon and Cadair Idris and we think that is exactly what we got. Mark was the perfect host and cooks a mean breakfast! Clean rooms, plenty of hot water, good beer and great value.

We arrived back on the Friday afternoon after a very wet walk up Snowdon and had hot showers and cold beers - perfect.

If I had one small complaint then it would be that the drying room was too small and not warm enough but that is nit picking

Thanks Mark, we will be back.

This is the second time that my friends and I have stayed at The Vagabond whilst climbing up the Welsh Mountains and we are already looking at dates to book again.
The bunkhouse offers good size rooms with new beds and bedding provided, plenty of showers, good central heating, Wi-fi, a phone signal and an on-site bar ( definately needed after the long climbs ! ).
Breakfast is prepared by Mark and Kelly and is an excellent start to the day and the bar is a great way to start the evening. ( ask for the chilli vodka if you are brave enough )
We will be going back and would recommend this bunkhouse.
Thank you Mark and Kelly once again
