This restaurant has just been refurbished. Can't believe when we ate there on a Friday night we were the only diners. Think the restaurant is missing a trick by not going on Travelzoo selling vouchers to attract more customers as the food is absolutely amazing. I had the slow roast belly of pork with haggis mash which was to die for. Lovely setting right on the river.

We recently dined at the riverside hotel and would highly recommend a visit. The menu and food was excellent and the service perfect. The best service in the world cannot compete with the setting, beatiful riverside views in the heart of Snowdonia- just great!

My husband & I have just returned from a 2 night break at the Craig y Dderwen. The hotel's lounge, restaurant and reception all need and uplift, everything is so drab. There is also a smell when you enter the hotel.

The place looks very tired, and certainly does not deserve a 4star rating.

The restaurant although overlooking the river has a very cold feel about it, and is not at all comfortable and had no atmosphere.

Breakfast was very disappointing. The cereal bowls were so small you couldn't fit 1 weetabix in let alone 2. The fruit which was only melon or bananas, were under ripe and not prepared properly. The breakfast itself was a let down also, tastless and greasy. Presentation of food was ordinary.

On a positive note, the setting is lovely by the river, but the flower beds are unkept and the seating outside is well worn and need replacing. Our room wasn't bad except the bathroom was very dark, and the balcony which they tell you is facing the river is so high you have to be standing to see the river. Also the balcony was quite dirty. Dont pay extra for a balcony its not worth it .After paying £140.00 for B+B you would expect to have a decent room and a balcony with a direct view.

Overall this hotel is not what it says, it should definately not be rated higher that 3 star.

The staff were ok, but certainly didnn't have the finesse that a 4 star hotel should have.

Be careful not to book BB and evening meal when booking because if the restaurant menu doesn't suit you and you end up eating in the Bistro you still are charged full price of £32.50 each for an evening meal that you haven't had, instead of something more like £20.00 bistro prices. This wasn't explained to me when booking only on leaving. Beware!!

Craig y Dderwen claims a 4 star rating. It is barely worth 1.

On entering the hotel we were greeted by the stench of stale food. The decor was tired, and cheap. We should have left. We decided to stay, mainly because we intended only to order drinks and welshcakes and sit outside overlooking the river.

On a positive note, the river is lovely.

The outside seating area had seen better days. The tables and seats were scratched, and beginning to rust.

We ordered welshcakes, tea, coffee, pimms and a welsh beer on the assumption that none was possible of ruin. We were wrong. The tea was tasteless, the coffee equally so, and we sent the welshcakes back to the kitchen.

Overall the service was poor. The waitress' response to our complaint that the welshcakes were not cooked was "ok". No discussion as to whether we wanted cooked welshcakes in their place, and certainly no apology.

On leaving Craig y Dderwen, we were informed the cost of the welshcakes had been deducted from the bill. Again, no apology.

If you are used to 2, 3, 4 or 5 star hotels, and choose to stay here, prepare to be very disappointed. It is one of the worst hotels I have ever entered.
