“lovely stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 October 2013

A cosy roomed old coaching inn full of character.

The staff were pleasant and efficient the rooms are cramped but very nice after all it is an old building. They were very clean there is also traffic noise but this did not bother us.

The restaurant was exceptional very good food at fair prices, we enjoyed the first night so much we decided to eat there the other 2 nights of our stay all 3 meals were good.

The position is perfect for visiting the local forests and the rest of Snowdonia.

Would definately go back.

As a couple staying in a great B&B nearby we thought we'd go for a meal here one evening. I've stayed here several years ago. The food is still excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. However, our waiter didn't really take this opportunity to shine and our wine didn't arrive until we had our main course in front of us. Nevertheless I still think it's about the best place to eat in Betws y Coed and you'd be missing a great meal if you didn't give it a go.

We had booked this hotel through the information centre in Shrewsbury and we were looking forward to staying in an inn with so much history. We had intended to stay for three nights so we could tour Wales and we were told that on the first night our room would be small with a bathroom next door but we could move into a bigger ensuited bedroom for the next two nights. On arrival we discovered that the carpark was full and that we would have to park on the busy road to unload our luggage. This was definitely not safe. Our room was the size of a cupboard with barely any space to move and the bathroom 'right next door' was down the hall. It had a very flimsy door and contained a bath tub with no overhead shower. The worst part was that our room was directly above the dining room and was extremely noisy. We could actually hear the converstions of the people sitting below, which went well into the night. Ear plugs did not dampen the noise! At 2.30am we were awoken by someone sitting in the dining room having a very loud converstaion, which went on for quite some time. Next day we were utterly exhausted, having had very little sleep so we decided to move on to another town. The receptionist couldn't understand why we didn't want to stay for another two nights. This is the worst hotel experience we have ever had and we are frequent travellers abroad.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't choose the room with the separate bathroom above the dining room!

On arrival for our 3 night stay we were shown to our room (No 3). We soon discovered that the bathroom had not been cleaned properly with 'hair' on the toilet and in the bath. Several of the light bulbs did not work including a lamp and the mirror light above the bathroom sink. The sofa was in desperate need of refurbishment or throwing out (we utilized the large cushions from the bed in order to be able to sit on it), the chest of drawers had a handle missing and the tea/coffee tray & kettle were balanced on a very precarious cane table. The wardrobe was an MFI looking contraption, not at all in keeping. As for the bed, it was a lovely bedstead if only the mattress were replaced since the springs and metal rivets were poking through in places. In fairness, the Manager Celine was very polite and helpful and offered us alternative accommodation which we declined because we had especially requested a room with bath. On the positive side, the evening meals in the restaurant were of very good quality and value and it was on the strength of both the Manager and the meal on our first evening that we decided to stay rather than check out early. With a minor revamp this has the potential to be a lovely room..

Room Tip: Room 3 could be a lovely room with the aid of a new mattress and sofa.

This is a wonderful Wales B&B style Inn on the edge of Betwsy Coed. It is a few minutes walk into the main part of town where the train station and most of the shops and restaurants are located. The rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The restaurant is excellent, both for dinner and breakfast. There is a small parking area but you can park in front of the hotel if full. The Inn is located on a sometimes busy road and street noise may be an issue if you go to sleep early. The interior is decorated with local Welsh flavor. The lobby is like a house foyer with a desk. WiFi is available in the bar for free. The hotel staff is very friendly and gave us lots of tips on where to explore in this beautiful part of Wales. Having a car helps, but you can walk to the best hiking locations. Ask at the hotel for directions.

Stayed for 3 nights.16th century inn so expect low ceilings, creaky floors etc.On main road so lot of traffic noise during the day but very little at night only occasional passing cars.We had pre booked the restaurant for our first night and before we had finished our meal had booked for the following two nights.Food was great,a fairly large menu which can at times be difficult to get right but over the course of our stay we had 7 different starters and 8 mains and all were excellent. We really loved it and its quirky feel. Towards end of September and still very busy

Room Tip: Rooms directly over bar can be noisy just with general chat from the bar

Stayed 2 nights, loved the location and the traditional coaching inn features. Betws-y-Coed and its surrounding areas are very picturesque. There are 12 rooms and we stayed in room 3 which has an en-suite with a fantastic spa tub. Some fixtures and fittings were in disrepair but added to the quirky feel of the hotel. We booked an evening meal in the restaurant both nights and it was very enjoyable. My son who was due back at uni had room 1 which was ideal for one person and was a lovely quiet little room at the back of the hotel. The staff were fantastic and very welcoming on arrival and throughout are stay. Just one complaint was that we were kept awake one night as we had room (3) above the bar and there was some late night drinking which is fine (I like an extended drinking season myself) but according to the hotel manual the bar had to be vacated by midnight. All in all a lovely place to chill out and admire the surrounding area of Betws-y-Coed. Would stay again but a little to pricey for us to stay every time we visit the area so has to be a treat once in a while.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the bar and road would be quieter

Thank you so much for coming to the Ty Gwyn to stay with us and sorry about the noise issue, the bar does close at midnight, but sometimes restaurant guests do use it to wait for their taxi. We look forward welcoming you back in the future.
