This is situated about 10 mins walk from the high street in Llanberis.
The slate museum is FREE to get in, mostly run by volunteers and you can give a donation if you wish.
Could spend about an hour looking around, or even longer if you wanted to read all about the displays. Small shop there.

This is one of the best museums we have ever visited - this was our second visit as we had enjoyed the first visit several years ago so much. There is plenty to see with interesting videos in several areas. It is fascinating to see the slate splitting - all made to look so easy. The little cottages show the changes in living over the years and it is so clever how they have been able to dismantle and rebuild them so perfectly just as if they have always been there.

I would say this is a 'must' on anyone's list when visiting the area

Great to have a film, a demonstration, a giant water wheel, as well as clear information boards and rooms set out as they would have been for the miners. Well worth a visit.

Wales produced half of the world's slate and its quality was excellent. The National Slate Museum, which is free, explains this industry. Good slate can be divided into thin slabs and it can be quite strong. In the 19th century, slate was often used to make roof tiles. The mining of slate was dangerous and the slate workers were terribly treated (while the big bosses did very well!) The workshops in which the National Slate Museum is located were powered by a huge waterwheel which drove many power tools. There was also an excellent exhibition of how slate was split and an excellent film about the history of the industry. The National Slate Museum is definitely worth a couple of hours. One can walk to the Museum from central Llanberis or make the short drive by car.

There is so much to see. All laid out in a logical order charting the history of the slate mine. There is a real sense of being amongst the slate and dust and the quarry hanging above.
The visual information boards are well designed with not too much to read. The film helps the imagination. The cottage laid out and furnished in date order are excellent, showing just how the workers lived through the years. The cafe served good food at reasonable prices. The volunteers were very helpful and interesting. The demonstration of the slate splitting was well delivered by a former worker. What a hard life it was!
I was on holiday with a dog in very hot weather, I wanted to visit the cottages, but could not leave the dog in the car. I am so grateful to the volunteer who looked after her while I toured the cottages. A great half day!!!
