We went for a week to Snowdonia because we had never been to Wales; and we were not disappointed.
We wanted to see Mount Snowdon, and go up the famous Snowdon Mountain Railway. That meant going to Llanberis, a former slate-mining village in a picturesque valley by the lovely Lake (Llyn) Padarn. We had booked into the "Alpine Lodge" and found ourselves having breakfast with guys who had just finished the "3 Peaks Race" in less than 24 hours. I felt a little bit of a cheat going up Snowdon the easy way, on the mountain railway, esp. as the train passed plenty of hill-walkers on the way up, but it was a great experience. The view from the summit was real "Kingdom of Heaven" style. Marvellous for anyone with a walking difficulty (like Arthritis.)

Llanberis also has the amazing Electric Mountain: a bus takes you right inside the mountain whose interior has been transformed into a huge, modern electric power-station. There's also the slate-mining museum, and a train-trip inside the galleries of the former slate mines. Fascinating! Children can take little train trips along the shores of Lake Padarn, pulled by little steam engines that look straight out of "Thomas the Tank Engine". For anyone interested in Welsh history, the handsome remains of Llewellyn's castle is just outside the village.

The village itself has a down-side for tourists however. It is very difficult to find somewhere for anything decent to eat in the evening. Most cafes there still have the "day-time tea-shop" mentality, and obviously think everyone just goes "home" in the evening. Most hotels and guest-houses are B&B orientated. It's best to have a bar-supper in a pub wherever you can find one, if you've been out of the village for a day-trip. If you come back to the village (say 7.30 p.m.) don't expect to find anywhere open for hot meals.

The Alpine Lodge provided lovely, generous breakfasts and confortable (if small) bedrooms with lovely views;
but it made no provision at all for anyone wanting to eat in the evening - and that was a great pity. If only small B&Bs would ask guests at breakfast if they wanted to order any evening food. Even if it were any only a pot of thick home-made soup, sandwiches and coffee for supper-time, it would make such a difference.
