Nythfa House is tucked away up a side street, very close to Brecon centre. It takes no more than 10 minutes to walk to the town.

I went with HF Holidays, on a 'Singing For Pleasure' week.

The breakfasts were amazing. Great choice of food...even veggie sausages. My fave was the eggs florentine...a toasted muffin with spinach and poached egg, with hollandaise sauce.

If you like good coffee take your own cafetiere, as I found the coffee weak.

The packed lunches were the best I have ever had...

Evening meals were huge...I asked for half portions most evenings.

I shared a twin room, and it was a nice surprise that the bath towels are really big.
Room 21 was in the attic and exhausting to get to....no proper window, and bit dark, so ask for the ground or first floor.

Some reviews said the 'outbuilding' rooms weren't nice, but they must have been updated, because they are really good now.

My friends all had massages at the 'retreat'. They reported that they were excellent.

WIFI wasn't great, so take a dongle.

Would return here anytime. Lovely atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ground floor or first floor good.

This hotel does cater to walking groups, and probably would not sustain itself without that source of guests. The food was average; the personnel average. Short walk to town. WIFI was spotty and appeared it was only in the lobby. Would not stay here again.

After seeing the main building and rooms online, we booked for a weekend away. Upon arrival we were shown to our room which could only be described as going to butlins about 20 years ago. It was outdated and small. When we enquirer about dinner we were told we would have to eat in the bar due to a large group of walkers that had reserved the dinning room. To make matters worse it was going to be a carvey and the starters were soup or fruit juice and for 22.95 it was appalling and I would heavily suggest taking a walk into town and choosing a restaurant there we went to the castle and for the same price had a lovely 3 course meal. You have to have breakfast by 9o'clock, and you're served by a moody teenager who doesn't even give you chance to read the menu before asking to take your order.but the beds were comfy.

Room Tip: Make sure there isn't a large group staying at the same time, and you're not in the outbuild...

The b&b is in a residential part of Brecon, just over a mile from the twon centre and it is split between the main house and other buildings, if in the main house, then the place looks fine but the outbuilding that I stayed in was very dated, basic and ugly! For £85 I would have expected better, no Wi Fi, ok breakfast, ok service and a great garden but this really is trying to cater for the senior citizen, walking holiday! Should update as standards have changed since the 80's. If staying, bring your own shower gel etc. as the hotel's is terrible!

Room Tip: Do not stay in any of the outbuildings!

Nythfa House is a short distance from Brecon town centre. It has an imposing appearance as you approach passing the lawned well kept gardens. You are directed around the back and enter through a characterless corridor - not the grand reception you might expect.

I soon relealised this is more hostel than hotel, owned and run by the members of a walking holiday club. There was no bar or restaurant in the evening but at £90 a night B&B this was definately not a low season price. The first bedroom I was shown had little daylight, was extremely claustrophobic and had bath only. I settled for a twin room with a double aspect at the back of the hotel - plenty of daylight but no view. It was basic but clean.

Lots of stairs on the bedroom floors (and didn't appear to be a lift) so probably not good for the less physically able - check with them before booking.

The hotel does benefit from a heated indoor pool in an outbuilding which again was basic (no towels or toiletries) but spotlessly clean. I was given a fresh towel by the receptionist rather than have to go back to my room for one which was nice.

Breakfast was only available from 8.30 until 9. I asked if they could make it slightly later for me as I had to work first thing and couldn't get back there until just after 9. They agreed but not without saying they don't normally allow exceptions. Unusally you are forced to share tables (hostel style?). I was scorned for moving onto a free separate table - was told the head chef did not allow single diners! Apart from that, breakfast was good - big choice of cereals, fruit etc from the cold buffet plus a cooked breakfast brought from the kitchen (of mainly local produce).

The whole experience left a rather sour note. As a business traveller you normally expect the establishment to put the customer first, not expect them to stick to a rigid set of house rules. I was only there for a few hours and it was walking distance from where I was working so on balance was fine. I won't be looking to return there.

Room Tip: Ask for a spacious room with natural light and shower if required.

stayed here one night on our way to Buith Wells, this hotel is about ten min.walk into Brecon town
yet it feels like you are staying out in the countryside, the gardens were well kept, the rooms were
clean and comfortable,we had a room on the lower floor overlooking the garden, we did not use the pool and spa but went to look it over, only sorry we didnt plan to use the pool, it looked great
the breakfast was good ,and plenty of it,only slight down side was the breakfast tables were layed out for groups of people, when we would have prefered to have breakfast on our own,but that is just our preference not a poor reflection on the hotel,i would stay here again

Room Tip: ask for a room in the front of the hotel

Nythfa House is owned and run by HF Holidays-stands for Holiday Fellowship- and is geared to walkers who go out each day and walk the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains. It is informal and friendly but not a traditional hotel format. They do everything very well-food is excellent. The rooms are comfortable. It represents very good value for money. It is a few minutes walk of the town of Brecon which has all facilties required and a beautiful cathedral. Oh, and it is in the middle of some of the most attractive countryside and villages in the UK. Not to be missed.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main house on the first floor
