“Pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed 19 November 2013

Having read some of the reviews on here plus pre-judgement that this would be a bit below the standard of the hotels I usually stay in on the business circuit simply because it's out in the sticks, I was thoroughly surprised and happy. My room was large with a beautiful view and most importantly warm as the weather had become the first really icy blast of the winter. Huge comfy bed and lots of bathroom products and freebies. My group had a dinner booked and we were given a private room and the food really was of an excellent standard for a hotel.restaurant. The staff were really attentive and helpful. All in all very impressed, only small negative is the walls are thin and there is some noise from the bar etc but didn't interfere with sleep. Maybe I was just lucky but would certainly stay there again..

We stayed for one night on the way home from North Wales. On arrival we were greeted by a very friendly and helpful receptionist. We were given a large room with a beautiful view (we paid the extra for a Beacons view room and felt it was worth it).Comfortable bed and nice toiletries in the bathroom. We ate in the hotel and enjoyed an excellent meal with attentive service. We will be back!

Room Tip: Room 36 had a beautiful view of the beacons and the river

Used to stay here about 10 years ago and it had a certain charm and was comfortable. Went back last year and several times since and it is even better! The hotel has obviously changed hands and had a makeover, rooms are very comfortable, staff helpful, Hotel is in walking distance of the town, and has great views of the river and mountains. The food was good before, but now is excellent, and the prices are still very reasonable! A really comfortable and welcoming hotel.

We have just had a couple of awful days and should have been in Spain but loving the Brecon's so much and not needing a passport we headed over to Wales. We made a booking to another hotel but when we got there we saw a for sale sign and no one was in. So we drove into Brecon looking for this hotel. It as to have the most perfect location views and ease of walking to museums and the main town and pubs. We opted for their best room a 4 poster bed and great views. We had dinner in the main restaurant and all courses were lovely I opted for local salmon and lamb my husband had cockles and a main of duck. Prices were good and what to be expected for a 3 star hotel.Breakfast had some of the best choices I have ever seen. We have eaten in many 5 star or 1-2 Michelin restaurants and for pure taste these were as good it is lacking only in finesse but that made for a welcome change. It was presented home style. The place brought a smile back to our faces thank you.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a view of the hills.

Just back from a three night stay here. We were fortunate enough to have a Brecon view room right at the end of the hotel away from it all with a beautiful view of the river and rolling hills. The room was impeccably clean, very tastefully decorated and modern with excellent facilities, furniture and special touches. Breakfast for great too with a good choice of cereals, fruits, croissants, yoghurts etc. as well as a hot menu to order from offering the usual (and a bit more incl. smoked fish etc.). Sunday was buffet style which worked well too as seemed busiest that day. Staff were all friendly and welcoming - I must say a special thank you to Sarah W on reception who made our trip celebrating a special occasion extra special :-) Goes to prove that nothing is too much and they will go the extra mile for you! Would definitely recommend and be sure to eat here in the evening too - delicious! Thanks for such a great stay (less wind and rain next time though please!)

Room Tip: Worth paying extra for the Brecon view room - especially the one at the end away from it all!

I very rarely feel the need to write a review of a hotel but this weekend's stay really took the biscuit. I booked a twin room for the Friday and Sunday nights last weekend for myself and my brother while we were competing in a mountain marathon event in the Brecon Beacons. After driving 430 miles from Scotland I was 'greeted' at 4pm by the woman on reception with the news that as there were 'four or five' functions on then the earliest table in the restaurant would be at about 8.45 pm. Resigned to eating out the night before running 50km in the hills I went to the room which was scrappy and looked out onto the decaying back walls and the kitchen extractor. The bath surround was cracked; the tile surround was split and broken and there was no hot water in the shower. The dressing table was propped up with blocks of wood (room 56). There was a huge crack in the ceiling outside the room, and the wooden laminate floor looked like it had been laid by the local primary school.

We checked out on Saturday morning and checked back in on Sunday evening. We were 'lucky' enough to be given the same room, in which the bedding had not been changed (perhaps we were fortunate and it was the same bedding as Friday night and no-one had stayed on Saturday?), and there was a half-used water bottle on the bedside table. Perhaps it was mine from Friday night? Or perhaps Saturday night's occupants had left it there? Who knows?

I ate in the hotel restaurant. While the waiting staff were pleasant the main course was mediocre at best, although the cured salmon platter starter was in fairness very good.

I slept for an hour but with the St Jude storm forecast I decided to check out at 7.30pm on the Sunday and drive 430 miles home. I paid in full - no quibbles there - but the woman on reception (perhaps the owner?) asked if I was safe to drive home rather than asking me if I had had a good stay.

As a parting comment I suggested that the many other competitors staying in her hotel must have made it a good weekend. All I received was a snort in return... nice.

£87 per night. Utterly underwhelming. Don't waste your money.

This was a small but very professionally operated hotel right in the centre of Brecon, literally built into the old castle walls. We called ahead to say we would be late arrivals - no problem. On arrival we were warmly welcomed, nothing was too much trouble. Apart from the wobbly floors the refurbished rooms in the older part of the building were comfortable an spacious - no significant traffic noise in spite of single glazed windows (it is a listed building) facing the street. Splendid buffet breakfast with cooked items to order. Thoroughly recommended even if it is a couple of pounds more expensive than other hotels in the town.

Room Tip: Refurbished room in original building
